Chapter 3 Methodology

This chapter outlines the methodology used in the study. It discusses the descriptive research design used to gather information about the existing English proficiency levels of third-year marine transportation students. It also describes the population of 500 students, with a sample of 30 students selected. A questionnaire was used as the research instrument, assessing vocabulary, grammar, and reading comprehension. The data gathering involved administering the questionnaire to students, and statistical analysis used formulas to calculate proficiency percentages and determine weighted means to evaluate proficiency levels.

CHAPTER 3

METHODOLOGY

This chapter discusses the research design, population, samples and sample
technique, research instrument, and the procedure for data gathering.

Research Design

This study used the descriptive research method which allowed the
researchers to gather information about existing conditions of Maritime Studies
concerning English level proficiency. Since the initial objective of this study is to
determine the current level of English language proficiency among third-year Marine
Transportation students at Asian Institute of Maritime Studies (AIMS), the descriptive
research method will be useful in assessing their current skills as well as its
implications in the students’ future and career. This method will enable researchers
to interpret the theoretical meaning of the findings and hypothesis development for
further studies, making this study an essential aspect in Maritime research. Such
was employed since the descriptive research design described the time of the study,
such as the cadetship program applications once the students graduate, and
explored the course of particular phenomena, given the potential challenges and
barriers that may be encountered in achieving the standardized level of English
proficiency. Overall, the descriptive research method was believed to provide
valuable exploration of the significance of the English language proficiency in
Maritime students’ lives in alignment with industry needs.

Population, Samples and Sampling Technique

The research focused on the population of third-year marine transportation

students at the Asian Institute of Maritime Studies, specifically the batch of 2023-
2024, which consisted of 500 students. For the study, 30 students were selected as
sample respondents, representing 6% of the total population of third-year marine
transportation students at the institute.
Research Instrument

The major research tool was a questionnaire that is officially known as the
TELPT. There were two sections to the questionnaire. The respondents'
demographic profile was established in the first section. The vocabulary section, the
grammar section, and the reading comprehension section made up the second part's
three sections. The Transparent English Proficiency Test, an online program that is
used by the researchers, provided the questionnaire and response sheet.

provided and promoted by the United States in language schools there. Division of
Joint Language University and the Defense Language Portal.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers will assess the 3rd-year College of Marine Transportation to

know the English proficiency of the students in their cadetship program application.
The data gathering that will be used in this study will be a Quantitative Method,
during this data gathering the researchers will conduct a survey of 3rd-year marine
transportation students of the Asian Institute of Maritime Studies (AIMS) via
questionnaires during their break time schedule. The researchers will hand out
questionnaires to the students of Maritime Transportation and request to fill out the
English proficiency test on the 2nd week of November 2023, after all the students fill
out the English proficiency test, we will be able to determine their abilities, and
capabilities of all the Marine Transportation students of Asian Institute of Maritime
Studies (AIMS) in using Maritime English.

Statistical Treatment

The data gathered from the test were carefully recorded, and the following
formula was utilized to determine the English Language Proficiency percentage of
third-year Marine Transportation students at the Asian Institute of Maritime Studies.

In this study, the researchers used the Slovin formula, percentages,

frequency, and weighted mean as shown below:
Slovin Formula

In this study, the Slovin formula, a method of summated ratings, was

employed. This method assigned a specific scale value to various responses.
Slovin's formula, was utilized to determine an adequate sample size from the
population. This formula aided in selecting an appropriate sample size for the
research expressed as:

n=N /(1+ Ne 2)

Where:

n - sample size

N - population size

e - margin of error

Percentage and Frequency

f
P= × ( 100 )
n

Where:

P – percentage

f – Value of a part

n – Total value of the part that makes up the whole

100 – constant

Weighted Mean

The researchers employed the weighted mean as a statistical method to

calculate the average responses across the multiple sections of the survey
questionnaire, providing a comprehensive evaluation of the options presented. This
calculation was executed using the following formula:

Σfx
x=
n

Where:

x – weighted mean

Σfx – sum of all the products of 1 and x, f being the frequency

of each weight and x as the weight of of each operation

n – the total number of respondent

The following are the corresponding verbal interpretations for the weighted
mean.

Weighted Means/Equivalent Corresponding Remarks

10-12 Very Proficient

7-9 Proficient

4-6 Fairly Proficient

Below 3 Not Proficient
