Why Should We Teach Grammar

The document discusses definitions of grammar and arguments for teaching grammar. It also compares the inductive and deductive approaches to teaching grammar, as well as other methods like using situational contexts, texts, songs/rhymes, and stories. Finally, it outlines rules for teaching grammar effectively, such as teaching grammar in context and for the purpose of comprehension/production rather than as an end in itself.

In groups, research the following information:

1. What is grammar?

The definition of grammar is a system of rules that allow us to structure sentences.

Grammar is the structure and system of a language, or of languages in general, usually

considered to consist of syntax and morphology.

2. The 7 following arguments about why to teach grammar:

● The sentence-machine argument: It helps the student to create different

sentences.
● The fine-tuning argument: Helps the student to be able to express clearly or
explicitly.
● The fossilisation argument: It suggests that the teaching of grammar counters the
risks of fossilization. Fossilization is a process in which a learner’s second language
system stops at some more or less deviant stage.
● The advance-organiser argument: Helps them to notice the different forms or
features of the target language.
● The discrete item argument: It suggests that grammar enables us to cut language
into different learnable and teachable units. It is possible to make language digestible
by organizing it into neat categories. It helps us to reduce the complexity of language
learning tasks because it consists of a finite set of rules.
● The rule-of-law argument: By giving a structured system of rules,Grammar is an
understandable set of rules that people with or without knowledge can apply to one
another. Grammar supports a transmission theory of teaching and learning in this
way.
● The learner expectations argument: It suggests that grammar is put in language
teaching because of learners’ expectation to learn grammar. Many learners expect
that learning grammar makes their language learning more efficient and systematic.

3. Advantages and disadvantages of the following methods to teach grammar:

4. Rules of teaching grammar

★ The Rule of Context:

Teach grammar in context. Teach grammatical forms in association with their meanings. The
choice of one grammatical form over another is always determined by the meaning the
speaker or writer wishes to convey.

★ The Rule of Use:

Teach grammar in order to facilitate the learners' comprehension and production of real
language, rather than as an end in itself.
★ The Rule of Economy:
To fulfill the rule of use, be economical. This means economising on presentation time in
order to provide maximum practice time.

★ The Rule of Relevance:

Teach only the grammar that students have problems with. This means, start off by finding
out what they already know. And don't assume that the grammar of English is a wholly
different system from the learner's mother tongue. Exploit the common ground.

★ The Rule of Nurture:

Teaching doesn't necessarily cause learning - not in any direct way. Instead of teaching
grammar, therefore, try to provide the right conditions for grammar learning.

★ The Rule of Appropriacy:

Interpret all the above rules according to the level, needs, interests, expectations and
learning styles of the students. This may mean giving a lot of prominence to grammar, or it
may mean never actually teaching grammar at all.
