Tutorial 1.2

This document contains 7 practice problems related to thermodynamics concepts like temperature, pressure, specific volume, and phase changes of substances like water and refrigerants. The problems involve completing property tables, estimating volume and internal energy given mass and state properties, calculating pressure and volume changes during heating and cooling processes, and using steam tables and the ideal gas law to find specific volume.

T (°C) P (kPa) v (m3/kg) Phase description
A 50 4.16
B 200 Saturated vapor
C 250 400
D 110 600

2. Complete this table for H2O:

T (°C) P (kPa) h (kJ/kg) x Phase description
A 200 0.7
B 140 1800
C 950 0.0
D 80 500

3. A rigid vessel contains 2 kg of refrigerant-134a at 800 kPa and 120°C. Estimate the volume

of the vessel and the total internal energy.

4. A 0.5-m3 vessel contains 10 kg of refrigerant-134a at –20°C. Solve

(a) the pressure
(b) the total internal energy
(c) the volume occupied by the liquid phase.

5. 100 grams of R-134a initially fill a weighted piston cylinder device at 60 kPa and -20°C. The
device is then heated isobarically until the temperature is 100°C. Calculate the change in
the device's volume as a result of the heating.

6. Estimate the mass in kg of 0.1m3 of H2O at 0.4MPa and 100°C.
