Catalogue Description Basic concepts of structural modelling. Finite element discretization. The direct
stiffness method (DSM) of structural analysis. MoM (Mechanics of Materials)
elements. Modelling stiffness, loads, boundary conditions and constraints.
Mathematical interpretation of finite elements: variational formulation. Shape
functions. Structural and continuum elements. Isoparametric elements. Numerical
integration. Introduction to finite element analysis by using FEA packages.
Course Learning The main learning outcomes of this course are:
Outcomes • to build a thorough understanding of the fundamental principles of the
finite element method to solve linear problems
• to develop tools to analyse solid mechanics problems using FEM and

typical commercial FEA packages.
