Assignment 2

This document provides details for Assignment 2 on renewable energy. Students are asked to design and analyze a photovoltaic system to power appliances in a family's sitting room. The family cannot afford to power their whole apartment. The assignment requires calculating power needs based on provided appliance details, sizing solar panels and batteries to meet the need, and drawing a labeled diagram of the system. Rubrics are provided to assess student work, which should be a maximum of 4 pages including design calculations, assumptions, and a conclusion.

Assignment 2
QUALIFICATION CODE BET (BNEC1)
SUBJECT Renewable Energy 3B
SUBJECT CODE RENE 301
SAQA CREDITS 12
Due Date 11th November 2023
Total Marks 100
Examiner Dr. E. J. Aladesanmi
Moderator Mr. K. G Ilunga

Topics: Analysis, Design, and implementation of solar photovoltaic system for sitting room
Due to the financial constrain of a family living in a farm settlement, the family could not afford to power the whole
three-room apartment they occupied. Thus, they decided to power only the sitting room to cut costs. Table 1 shows
the list of appliances with the power rating and hours in use. The system is to be designed and powered by a 12
Vdc, 120 W solar panel. As a renewable energy engineer, specialising in solar energy, carry out a design analysis
of a PV system for powering the sitting room considering the listed appliance in Table 1. Using your design analysis
and calculations, draw a well-labelled single-line diagram for the project.
Present your work as a maximum of 4 pages. Details of the design calculations must be presented. Any
assumption(s) made should also be stated. The PV module specification is given in Table 2.
Hints: Take the depth of discharge (DOD) of the battery to be 60%, the panel generation factor (PGF) to be 3.2,
and the loss factor of 1.3.

Appliance Power Rating (W) Hours in use per day
Desktop with Monitor 20 10
Incandescent light 40 12
Television 25 8
Electric fan 50 6
Refrigerator 80 24
