Due Date: August 11, 2023, CLO-1 (C4)

Prove that the sum of the normal stresses is
constant. See Figs. 9a and 9b.

Q#1

Figure. 9
The state of stress at a point in a member is
shown on the element. Determine the stress
components acting on the inclined plane AB.
Solve the problem using the method of
Q#2
equilibrium.

The state of stress at a point in a member is

shown on the element. Determine the stress
components acting on the inclined plane AB.
Solve the problem using the method of
Q#3 equilibrium

Determine the normal stress and shear stress

acting on the inclined plane AB. Solve the
problem using the stress transformation
equations. Show the result on the sectioned
Q#4 element.

The state of stress at a point is shown on the

element. Determine (a) the principal stress and
(b) the maximum in-plane shear stress and
Q#5 average normal stress at the point. Specify the
orientation of the element in each case. Show the
results on each element.
Determine the equivalent state of stress on an
element at the same point which represents (a)
the principal stress, and (b) the maximum in-
plane shear stress and the associated average
Q#6 normal stress. Also, for each case, determine the
corresponding orientation of the element with
respect to the element shown. Sketch the results
on each element.

Using Mohr’s Circle Determine the equivalent

state of stress if an element is oriented 25°
counter-clockwise from the element shown.
Q#7

Using Mohr’s Circle Determine the principal

stress, the maximum inplane shear stress, and
Q#8 average normal stress. Specify the orientation of
the element in each case.

The state of strain at the point has components

of𝜖𝑥 = 200(10−6), 𝜖𝑦 =
−300(10−6) 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝛾𝑥𝑦 = 400(10−6). Use the
strain-transformation equations to determine
Q#9 the equivalent in-plane strains on an element
oriented at an angle 30o of counter-clockwise
from the original position. Sketch the deformed
element due to these strains within the x–y plane.

The state of strain at the point has components

of 𝜖𝑥 = 180(10−6), 𝜖𝑦 =
−120(10−6) 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝛾𝑥𝑦 = −100(10−6). Use the
strain-transformation equations to determine (a)
the in-plane principal strains and (b) the
Q#10 maximum in-plane shear strain and average
normal strain. In each case specify the orientation
of the element and show how the strains deform
the element within the x–y plane.

300(10−6), 𝜖𝑦 = 550(10−6) 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝛾𝑥𝑦 =
−650(10−6) components. Using Mohr’s circle,
determine (a) the principal strains at A in the
Q#12

plane.
