PREFACE

The ASMM has been used as the method of measurement of building works in Australia since the first edition was published
in 1959. ASMM was revised in 2016 so that Bills of Quantities aligned with developments in the building industry that required
a rationalised approach to measurement and to documentation. ASMM6 deleted measurement rules for a number of less
common items and the introduction of rules for some sections of work not previously included.

The standard method of measurement used in New Zealand since 1985 was NZ Standard 4202. A cross – industry committee
representing the New Zealand Institute of Quantity Surveyors, Registered Master Builders Association NZ, Specialist Trade
Contractors Federation, New Zealand Institute of Building, along with major Professional quantity surveying and Contractor
firms, concluded that it was not feasible to update NZS4202. Their recommendation, supported by all organisations involved
was to adopt a revised ASMM as a joint Australian and New Zealand Standard Method of Measurement.

This new joint trans-Tasman standard was introduced in 2018 and will provide greater opportunities for companies who
are working in both Australia and New Zealand. The tabulated format of the new edition has been retained for its clarity of
presentation and ease of use.
