Assignment 8 and 9
Assignment 8 and 9
2. Initially, there are 500 strands of bacteria in a culture. If the growth rate of the population of
the bacteria in the culture is proportional to the population itself, the strands of the bacteria after
5 minutes are 750 strands. Determine the growth rate factor of the population growth and
determine when will there be 1500 strands of the bacteria in the culture.
3. A savings account accrues interest compounded continuously at a rate of 2.55% per year. If
an initial deposit of PHP 4500 was made, determine when will the amount be doubled? Assume
no additional deposits and withdrawals.
4. In a certain bank account, at t = 3 years, the amount in the account is PHP 52500, and at t =
5 years, the amount in the account is PHP 75000, determine the continuously compounding
annual rate of interest of the account and the initial deposited amount.
5. A certain compound is analyzed in a laboratory to test the theory that the rate of conversion of
the compound is proportional to the mass of the compound that are not still converted. Initially,
100g of the substance is analyzed. After 30s, the substance reacts violently and 30g of the
compound has converted in form of fumes. Determine the time when the amount of compound
that remains is 30g.
6. Determine the initial amount of radioactive substance if after 22 years, the remaining
unconverted substance is 50mg and after another 10 years the remaining unconverted
substance is 40mg. Determine the decay rate factor.
7. Radium decomposes at a rate proportional to the amount present. A 300g of radium today will
become approximately 288g, a hundred years from now. Determine the half-life of Radium and
the amount of Radium present after 500 years.
8. Determine the half-life of the substance if an initial 150mg has decayed to 50mg in a span of
20 years. Determine also the time it will take for 95% of the substance would have been
decayed. Assume that the decay rate is proportional to the unconverted amount of the
substance.
Assignment 9
1) A thermometer with an initial temperature of 75°C is placed in a room with a controlled
temperature of 22°C. After 3 minutes, the thermometer reads 60°C, determine how long will the
thermometer reads 30°C. Determine also the reading after 8 minutes.
2) 3 students in a dormitory of 100 spread a rumor about the suspension of classes. After 2
minutes, 10 students heard the rumor. If the spread of the rumor per unit of time is jointly
proportional to the number of students who heard the rumor and the number of students who\
haven’t yet heard the rumor, determine how long it would take for 80 students to hear the rumor.
Determine also the number of students who will hear the rumor in 10 minutes later.
3) A hot pie is just taken out from an oven with a set temperature of 175°F. It is placed near a
window with an ambient temperature of 68°F. After 3 minutes, the temperature of the pie is
150°F, determine how long it will take the pie have a temperature of 100°F. Determine also the
time when the temperature of the pie is half a degree above the ambient temperature.
4) Initially, an iron bar rests on a room having a controlled temperature of 25°C. It is then taken
inside a furnace having a temperature of 1000°C. After 10 minutes, the iron bar has a
temperature of 750°C. Determine when the iron bar will have a temperature of 900°C.
Determine also the constant of proportionality.
5) 10 mice in a population of 80 are infected with a disease to test a theory of epidemic spread
which states that the rate of spread of disease in a population is jointly proportional to the
number of infected and uninfected species. If after 6 hours, 10 more mice acquire the disease,
determine the rate of infection of the disease in the population for the 10th hour.
6) At 4:00PM, a thermometer reading of 28°C is taken outside where the ambient temperature is
−11°C. At 4:05PM, the thermometer reads 8 degrees above zero. After a while, the thermometer
is returned to the room maintained at 28°C. At 4:12PM, the thermometer reads 15°C. When was
the thermometer returned to the room?
7) Suppose false news spreads in a city of 150,000 in a day. Within a week, 15000 residents
heard the news. Assume that the spread of the rumor is jointly proportional to the number of
persons who heard the news and the number of persons who haven’t heard the news.
Determine how long half of the population heard the rumor.
8) A cup of tea is prepared in a room of ambient temperature 25°C. A bag of tea is brewed in a
cup of boiling water at 105°C and after 2 minutes, the cup of tea has a temperature of 80°C.
Determine the temperature of the cup of tea after 5 minutes, and the time when the temperature
of the cup of tea is 35°C.
