Laboratory Activity no.1 LABORATORY RULES AND REGULATIONS
I. Safety Rules
a. General
i. The performance of unauthorized experiments is strictly prohibited.
ii. All personal injuries, however slight, occurring in the laboratory must be reported immediately to the
instructor in charge of the particular laboratory classes.
iii. Any accident such as the spilling of dangerous or corrosive chemicals, explosion, fire, or the like must
be reported immediately.
iv. Each student is required to know the location and proper use of the fire extinguishers and first aid kit
in which he/she is working.
v. All water, gas, air, electrical, and other service connection must be made in a safe and secure manner.
vi. Solid matter, insoluble in water, notably paper, matches, towels, broken glass, stoppers, rubber tubing
etc. is to be kept out of sinks at all times to minimize the danger of plugging drains. Such items are to
be kept away from positions where they might fall into sinks or drains.
vii. Practical jokes, boisterous conduct, excessive noise and the like are forbidden.
viii. There shall be no smoking anywhere in the laboratory portion of the building.
ix. No students are allowed to work in the laboratory unless a teacher is present or has permission to do
so from his/her instructor.
x. Gas cocks must be closed if there is a fire leakage.
b. Personal Protection
i. No chemical should be tasted unless you are directed to do so by the instructor in charge. When you
are instructed to smell a chemical, do so by fanning the vapor toward your nose.
ii. When heating or carrying out a reaction in a test tube, never point the tube toward your neighbor or
yourself.
iii. When cutting glass tubing, always protect your hands with a towel.
iv. When inserting rods, tubing, or thermometers into stoppers, the glass should be lubricated with soapy
water or glycerol. Tubing ends should always be fire polished.
v. Glass tubing should extend well through rubber stoppers so that no closure of the tube can occur if the
rubber swells.
vi. Heavy pieces of glass apparatus should be supported with clamps suitably protected with rubber or
asbestos pads and also with bottom support such as a ring or tripod.
vii. When diluting acids ALWAYS POUR THE ACID INTO THE WATER with stirring; never vice versa.
viii. Do not heat any piece of apparatus too suddenly.
ix. When observing the odor of the liquid, do not hold your face directly over the container.
x. Never use a direct flame when heating volatile and flammable substances.
c. Accidents and Injuries
i. Report any accident (spill, breakage, etc.) or injury (cut, burn, etc.) to the instructor immediately, no
matter how trivial it may appear.
ii. If a chemical should splash in your eye(s), immediately flush with running water from the eyewash
station for at least 20 minutes. Notify the instructor immediately.
FIRST AID
INJURY SAFE RESPONSE
Burns Apply cold water. Call your teacher immediately.
Cuts and Bruises Stop any bleeding by applying direct pressure. Cover cuts
with a clean dressing. Apply cold compresses to bruises. Call
your teacher immediately.
Fainting Leave the person lying down. Loosen any tight clothing and
keep crowds away. Call your teacher immediately.
Foreign matter in Eye Flush with plenty of water. Use an eyewash bottle or
fountain. Call your teacher immediately.
Poisoning Note the suspected poisoning agent and call your teacher
immediately.
Any spills on skin Flush with large amounts of water. Call your teacher
immediately.
NOTE: In the application of all these rules and regulations, the student is to be as careful and considerate of the welfare of
his classmate or co-member as he/she is of himself/herself. Should the interpretation of each of the above be necessary,
the advice of the laboratory instructor should be obtained.
