Laboratory Activity no.1 LABORATORY RULES AND REGULATIONS

I. Safety Rules
a. General
i. The performance of unauthorized experiments is strictly prohibited.
ii. All personal injuries, however slight, occurring in the laboratory must be reported immediately to the
instructor in charge of the particular laboratory classes.
iii. Any accident such as the spilling of dangerous or corrosive chemicals, explosion, fire, or the like must
be reported immediately.
iv. Each student is required to know the location and proper use of the fire extinguishers and first aid kit
in which he/she is working.
v. All water, gas, air, electrical, and other service connection must be made in a safe and secure manner.
vi. Solid matter, insoluble in water, notably paper, matches, towels, broken glass, stoppers, rubber tubing
etc. is to be kept out of sinks at all times to minimize the danger of plugging drains. Such items are to
be kept away from positions where they might fall into sinks or drains.
vii. Practical jokes, boisterous conduct, excessive noise and the like are forbidden.
viii. There shall be no smoking anywhere in the laboratory portion of the building.
ix. No students are allowed to work in the laboratory unless a teacher is present or has permission to do
so from his/her instructor.
x. Gas cocks must be closed if there is a fire leakage.
b. Personal Protection
i. No chemical should be tasted unless you are directed to do so by the instructor in charge. When you
are instructed to smell a chemical, do so by fanning the vapor toward your nose.
ii. When heating or carrying out a reaction in a test tube, never point the tube toward your neighbor or
yourself.
iii. When cutting glass tubing, always protect your hands with a towel.
iv. When inserting rods, tubing, or thermometers into stoppers, the glass should be lubricated with soapy
water or glycerol. Tubing ends should always be fire polished.
v. Glass tubing should extend well through rubber stoppers so that no closure of the tube can occur if the
rubber swells.
vi. Heavy pieces of glass apparatus should be supported with clamps suitably protected with rubber or
asbestos pads and also with bottom support such as a ring or tripod.
vii. When diluting acids ALWAYS POUR THE ACID INTO THE WATER with stirring; never vice versa.
viii. Do not heat any piece of apparatus too suddenly.
ix. When observing the odor of the liquid, do not hold your face directly over the container.
x. Never use a direct flame when heating volatile and flammable substances.
c. Accidents and Injuries
i. Report any accident (spill, breakage, etc.) or injury (cut, burn, etc.) to the instructor immediately, no
matter how trivial it may appear.
ii. If a chemical should splash in your eye(s), immediately flush with running water from the eyewash
station for at least 20 minutes. Notify the instructor immediately.
FIRST AID
INJURY SAFE RESPONSE
Burns Apply cold water. Call your teacher immediately.
Cuts and Bruises Stop any bleeding by applying direct pressure. Cover cuts
with a clean dressing. Apply cold compresses to bruises. Call
your teacher immediately.
Fainting Leave the person lying down. Loosen any tight clothing and
keep crowds away. Call your teacher immediately.
Foreign matter in Eye Flush with plenty of water. Use an eyewash bottle or
fountain. Call your teacher immediately.
Poisoning Note the suspected poisoning agent and call your teacher
immediately.
Any spills on skin Flush with large amounts of water. Call your teacher
immediately.

II. General Rules for Laboratory Conduct


a. Wear the laboratory gown at all times in the laboratory. Wear also goggles and gloves if necessary.
b. Working table must be kept as free from unnecessary apparatus as possible and any refuse must be deposited
at once into the waste can.
c. Report any loss of equipment or apparatus to your instructor and to the laboratory assistant as soon as possible.
d. Get only the right amount of chemical to be used from the laboratory counter.
e. Cover the stock reagent bottles and never to be interchange with one another.
f. Use the quantities of reagents recommended in your laboratory sheets/manual unless the instructor specifies
the amount to be used.
g. At the end of your experimental work, the working table must be left thoroughly clean and dry.
h. See to it the that gas and water outlets and faucets you used are closed before leaving the laboratory.
i. Unless with due permission, students are allowed to enter the laboratory 15 minutes before the scheduled time
of laboratory class and 15 minutes after.
j. All experiments must be completed two weeks before the final examination.
III. Requisition of Chemical and Borrowing Apparatus
a. Fill out completely the slip provided by the laboratory assistant.
b. Submit the slip after filling out to it the laboratory instructor for signature and then to the laboratory assistant
for the releasing the apparatus.
c. All items borrowed or requisitioned must be checked before and after using them. Any damage previously
incurred must be noted in the slip before receiving them.
d. The user is liable for any breakage and/or damage incurred during his/her use of the apparatus or equipment.
e. All materials borrowed must be clean and returned immediately after using them. Delay will just increase the
student liability to loss or break them.
f. Apparatus slip is returned to the student after all items have been settled and accounted for.
g. For partial returning of apparatus, the borrowing is renewed by filling out a new form listing the items still left
to the student’s responsibility.
h. In case of breakage, the cost of apparatus is charged to the individual or group depending on whatever
agreement has been reached by the members of the group.
i. Lost and unreturned apparatus by the individual or group will be liable for payment on said item borrowed.
j. Anybody found guilty of stealing apparatus is subject to punishment as recommended.
IV. Cleanliness
a. Always clean your working area after an experiment. Answered report sheet will not be accepted from a group
who fails to clean.
b. Do not dump solid waste on the sink. Be sure the tap water is running when discarding liquid onto the sink.
Waste acid should be disposed into the waste acid bottle and not into the sink.
c. Absolutely no eating is allowed in the laboratory.
V. Attendance
a. You must always come on time for the laboratory class. If you are late beyond 15 minutes, 20% of the total
points for the experiment will be deducted from your score.
b. Absence from the laboratory class with no valid reason will mean a score of zero for the experiment. If you are
unavoidably absent due to illness or family crisis, inform your teacher as soon as possible,
VI. Laboratory Requirements
a. Individual Requirements
i. You are required to have your own laboratory manual/sheet.
ii. You are required to wear a laboratory gown when performing experiments. Students without
laboratory gowns are not allowed to perform the experiments and are considered absent.
iii. You are going to answer the report sheets after performing the experiment and submit them to your
instructor.
b. Group Requirements
i. Bring one of each of the following; match, round pads (rags), dishwashing liquid, tissue paper, and
alcohol (500mL).

NOTE: In the application of all these rules and regulations, the student is to be as careful and considerate of the welfare of
his classmate or co-member as he/she is of himself/herself. Should the interpretation of each of the above be necessary,
the advice of the laboratory instructor should be obtained.
