Incline Plane

An incline plane is a sloped surface that makes it easier to move heavy objects using less force. Forces acting on an object sliding down an incline plane depend on whether there is friction or not. With friction, the net force is the force down the plane minus the friction force. The acceleration down the plane is given by the net force divided by mass. Examples provide calculations to find acceleration, normal force, net force, and time or distance for objects on inclined planes.

INCLINE PLANE

An incline or a ramp is a slope or a flat surface raised

at an angle in order to move heavy loads with less
effort. E.g slides in play parks.

An object sliding down an incline plane (no

friction)

Fnet= Fx= mg sinθ FN= mg cosθ

ma= mg sinθ
a= g sinθ
An object sliding down an incline plane (with
friction)

Fnet = F- ff = ma, Fnet = mg sinθ- µkFN= ma

An object sliding down an incline plane at constant

velocity (with friction)

Fnet = F- ff = 0 , Fnet = mg sinθ- ff = 0

mgsinθ= μmgcosθ
μ= tanθ
Force applied to move an object up the rough
incline plane

Fnet= Fu-mgsinθ-ff= ma

EXAMPLES
1. A wooden block of mass 3 kg is released from
rest on a rough plane that is inclined at 25° above the
horizontal. The coefficient of friction between the
block and the plane is 0.4. Find the acceleration of
the block.
2. A man applies a force of 200N to pull a 10 kg
block up an incline plane with an angle of 30o to the
horizontal. The coefficient of kinetic friction
between the block and the plane is 0.5.
a) Draw a free body diagram
b) Determine the value of the normal force
c) Determine the value of the net force up the
incline
d) The acceleration for this motion
e) The speed with which the block is moving with,
assuming it takes 6 seconds to reach the top of
the incline.

3. A box slides down a 30o incline with an initial

speed of 8m/s.
a) What is the acceleration of the box?
b) Calculate the final speed of the box after it
travels 200m down the incline.
c) How long will it take before the box comes
to a stop?
