Lab Class 9

The document provides instructions and questions for three chemistry experiments. The first experiment tests for carbon dioxide by bubbling gas through limewater. The second tests for hydrogen gas with a lighted splint. The third experiment heats ammonium chloride to test for ammonia with litmus paper. Additional questions examine how concentration affects the rate of a reaction between hydrochloric acid and calcium carbonate by measuring the reaction time. Faster reaction times indicate a higher concentration leads to more frequent effective collisions per unit time according to collision theory.

Class 9 (IX)

Name................................. Section......................

Objective : Identify the gases produced in the following reactions.

Experiment 1
Add 2ml of Hydrochloric Acid to a boiling tube and add half spoon of sodium carbonate. Use a
delivery tube.
Test: Add lime water in separate test tube and pass the gas in the lime water
Observation:

Experiment 2
Add 2ml of Hydrochloric Acid in a test tube and add 1 cm Magnesium ribbon. Use a delivery
tube.
Test: use a lighted splint in the mouth of the test tube.
Observation:

Experiment 3
Add 2ml of Sodium Hydroxide in a boiling tube and add half spoon of Ammonium Chloride,
then heat the boiling tube using Bunsen burner.
Test: use a damp litmus paper
Observation:
Objective : Determining the effect of concentration on the rate of reaction.
Experiment : Take 50ml of Hydrochloric acid, marked X in a beaker add 20g of powder
calcium carbonate to the beaker and stir using a spatula, record the observation in the table
provided below along with the time taken for the reaction to complete using a stop watch.
Repeat the above experiment using 50ml of Hydrochloric acid, marked Y and 20g of powder
calcium carbonate. Record the observation below along with time taken for reaction to complete.
