2021 – 2022
Problem Set 1

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS: Show your clear, complete, and properly labeled handwritten
solutions for the problems below. Typed solutions will not be accepted. For the
submission, compile your solutions in a pdf file. You may use a mobile scanner app or
take a picture of your solutions and place them in a pdf file.
I. Determine whether the following is a function or not a function. If it is a function,
determine its domain. Otherwise, show why it is not a function.

1. 𝑦 = √𝑥 + 1
2. 𝑦 = √1 − 𝑥 2
3. 𝑥2 + 𝑦2 = 1
4. 𝑦 = (𝑥 − 1)2 + 2
5. 𝑥 = (𝑦 + 1)3 − 2
6. 𝑦 = (𝑥 + 2)3 − 1

II. Evaluate the following functions. Simply your final answers.

For items 7 through 13, consider the function 𝑔(𝑥 ) = 3𝑥 2 − 4.
7. 𝑔(−5)
1
8. 𝑔 (2)
9. 𝑔(𝑥 2 )
10. 𝑔(3𝑥 2 − 4)
11. 𝑔(𝑥 − ℎ)
12. 𝑔 (𝑥 ) − 𝑔 (ℎ )
𝑔(𝑥+ℎ)−𝑔(𝑥)
13. ,ℎ ≠ 0

For items 14 through 20, consider the functions 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 𝑥 3 − 15𝑥 2 + 75𝑥 − 125
and 𝑘 (𝑥 ) = 𝑥 2 − 25.
14. (𝑓 + 𝑘 )(𝑥 )
15. (𝑘 − 𝑓 )(𝑥 )

17. (𝑘 ⋅ 𝑘)(𝑥)
𝑓
18. (𝑘) (𝑥)
19. (𝑓 ∘ 𝑘 )(𝑥 )
20. (𝑘 ∘ 𝑘)(𝑥)

III. Sketch by hand the graph of the function. Show how plotted points are obtained.
Determine its domain and range.
21. 𝐹 (𝑥 ) = −5𝑥 2
22. ℎ(𝑥 ) = 6 − 𝑥
23. 𝑔(𝑥 ) = 6 + 𝑥 2
24. 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = (2𝑥 − 5)2
