1. Sketch the winding arrangement for a 2 pole, 18 slots, single layer,
three-phase ac winding.
2. Repeat prob. (1) for a double layer full pitch winding.
3. Repeat prob. (1) for a double layer short pitch winding, the coil is
shorted by one slot.
4. Make tables of synchronous speed in radians per second and
revolutions per minute for p = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14 and (a) f = 60
Hz; (b) f = 50 Hz.

1- Calculate the angle between any two successive slots in electrical degree
for the following 3-phase synchronous machines:
i. Machine (a) has 6 poles and 72 slots
ii. Machine (b) has 10 slots/pole/phase
iii. Machine (c) has 2 slots short pitched coils with coil span of 2/3 pole
pitch.

2- The outside diameter of the rotor of an alternator is 29 cm. and the axial
length is 60 cm. The machine has four poles, and the peak flux density is
1.2-T. Find the flux per pole.

3- A 4-pole, 3-phase synchronous motor has 24 slots and the coils are short
pitched by one slot. Calculate the values of the distribution and pitch factors.

4- A 3-phase, 60 Hz, star-connected, synchronous generator has 6
slots/pole/phase. The coil pitch is16 slots. The winding has 30 turns
per phase. If the average value of the air-gap flux is 80 mWb,
determine the line value of the induced emf.
5- In a certain 14-pole, three-phase alternator, the inside diameter of
the stator is 36 in. There are three slots per pole per phase. The
winding is double layer. The coil pitch is seven slots.
(a) Find γ and ρ in electrical degrees, mechanical degrees, and
inches on the inside surface of the stator.
(b) Draw a set of 18 slots for 2 of the 14 poles and locate the coil
sides for all three phases in these slots.
6- A 3-phase, 50 Hz, delta-connected, synchronous generator has 12
single layer slots/pole/phase. The winding has 40 turns per phase.
What is the average value of the air-gap flux to give 600 V across
the lines at no load.

7- A 3-phase, 50-Hz, 4-pole, Y-connected synchronous generator has
72 stator slots and a double-layer armature winding. The coil is short
pitched by 2 slots and each coil has 20 turns. The air gap flux
density due to field poles contains third and fifth harmonic
components of magnitude 20% and 10%, respectively, relative to the
fundamental. The fundamental flux per pole is 0.01 Wb. The
generator runs at the synchronous speed.
i. Determine the rms values of the fundamental and harmonic
voltages induced in the stator winding.
ii. Determine the rms value of the stator phase voltage.
iii. Determine the rms value of the stator line-to-line voltages.

8- A 3-phase, 60-Hz, six-pole, Y-connected synchronous generator has
108 stator slots and a double-layer armature winding. The coil pitch is
150° and each coil has 30 turns. The air gap flux density due to field
poles contains third and fifth harmonic components of magnitude 30%
and 20%, respectively, relative to the fundamental. The fundamental flux
per pole is 0.01 Wb. The generator runs at the synchronous speed.
i. Determine the rms values of the fundamental and harmonic voltages
induced in the stator winding.
ii. Determine the rms value of the stator phase voltage.
iii. Determine the rms value of the stator line-to-line voltages.

3- A 375-MVA, 20,000-V, three-phase alternator has a per-unit
synchronous reactance of 1.2, neglect the armature resistance
i. What is Xd in Ohms?
ii. Find Ef and δ when the machine is delivering 300-MW at 20,000-V
and a power factor of 0.8, lagging.

1- A 3-phase, Y connected, 6-pole, synchronous generator has 144
stator slots. The coil pitch is 20 slots. Each coil has 3 turns. The
excitation flux in the generator is 0.14Wb/pole and the speed of
rotation is 1200-rpm. Determine the percentage voltage regulation
when the generator feeds a balanced, three-phase, Y connected,
resistive load of 3Ω/phase. The generator has an armature resistance
of 2Ω/phase and synchronous reactance of 12Ω/phase.

2- For the l000-kVA machine whose characteristics are given below,


calculate the field current required to operate the machine at full load
and rated terminal voltage as a generator at 0.8 power factor, lagging.
Calculate leakage reactance using Potier method.

3- A 3 phase, 5000 kVA, 11 kV, 50 Hz, star connected, synchronous
generator has an armature resistance of 1 Ohm/phase and a synchronous
reactance of 10 Ohm/phase. If the generator is connected to 11 kV
infinite bus,
a) Determine its excitation voltage, stator current and power angle when
it delivers 4000 kW at 0.85 power factor lagging.
b) If the field current is kept constant, determine the power the generator
can deliver at unity power factor.
c) If the power output is kept constant at 4000 kW and the field current
decreased, by what factor can the field current of part (a) be reduced
before synchronism is lost?

4- A three-phase, 250 hp, 2300 V, 60 Hz, star-connected synchronous motor
has an armature resistance of 2  and synchronous reactance of 12  per
phase. When it draws 196 kW the power angle is found to be 45 electrical
degrees. Determine:
i. The excitation voltage per phase.
ii. The supply line current and the motor power factor.
iii. The percentage change in the field current to increase the power factor
to unity with the same input power.

5- Three-phase, 4000 kVA, star-connected alternator has a synchronous


reactance of 10 Ω and armature resistance of 1 Ω. The alternator delivering
its full load to a 11 kV bus-bars at 0.8 power factor lagging.
i. Determine the stator current, the excitation voltage and the power angle.
ii. If the field current decreased by 40% while the steam-flow rate
increased by 30%, determine the stator current, the power factor and the
power angle in this case.

1- A small industrial plant has a total electrical load of 300-kW at 0.75
power factor, lagging. There is need to add a 50-hp pump to be driven
at more or less constant speed. If the pump is driven by a synchronous
motor capable of operation at 0.8 power factor, leading, what will be
the new total load and power factor? Assume no losses in the motor.

2- The field current of a synchronous motor is increased, causing the


line current to decrease. Was the machine operating at leading,
lagging, or unity power factor before the change?

3-A synchronous motor is drawing 100 A from a 208-V, three-phase


line at unity power factor, with the field current adjusted to 0.9-A. The
syn­chronous reactance Xs is 1.3 Ω. (a) Find the power angle δ.
(b) Assuming no change in mechanical load, approximately what
value of field current will result in a power factor of 0.8, leading?

1- A3 phase, star connected, salient pole, synchronous motor has reactances
of Xd = 0.8 p.u. and Xq = 0.4 p.u.
The motor is loaded to draw rated current at rated voltage and 0.8 power
factor lagging. Neglect armature resistance and rotational losses,
i.Determine the excitation voltage and the power angle.
ii.If the excitation is removed, determine the maximum value of the
steady-state power the machine can supply.

2- A three-phase, star connected, salient pole synchronous generator has stator


resistance and reactances of
Ra= 0.05 p.u. , Xd = 0.8 p.u. and Xq = 0.5 p.u.
If the generator is connected to an infinite bus at the rated voltage,
determine:
the excitation voltage and the power angle when the generator delivers its
rated power to a pure resistive load.

3- A three-phase, star connected, salient pole synchronous motor has
negligible stator resistance and reactances of :
Xd = 1.0 p.u. and Xq = 0.6 p.u.
If the motor is connected to an infinite bus at its rated voltage and draws
72% of its rated power at 0.9 power factor lead, determine:
i. The excitation voltage and the power angle.
ii. The power due to excitation and that due to saliency.
4- A three-phase, star-connected synchronous generator is delivering 50 A
to a 208-V bus bar, at 0.8 leading power factor, with the field current
adjusted to 0.9-A. The armature resistance and synchronous reactance are
0.2 and 1.2 respectively. Neglect saturation,
i. Find the power angle .
ii. Assuming no change in prime mover power, what is the value of field
current that increases the power factor to unity?
iii. If the prime mover power is reduced to half its previous value. What
field current would be required for unity power factor under the new

5- A 3-phase salient pole synchronous machine has reactances Xd = 1.2 pu
and Xq = 0.6 pu. Neglect armature resistance.
(a) The machine operates as a synchronous motor and draws 0.8 pu of
power at rated voltage and a power factor of 0.8 leading.
(i) Draw the phasor diagram, and then determine the power angle 
and the excitation voltage Ef in pu.
(ii) Determine the power due to excitation and that due to saliency in
this case.
(b) The machine operates now as a generator and delivers 0.8 pu of power
at rated voltage and a power factor of 0.8 leading. Draw the phasor
diagram, and then determine the excitation voltage Ef in pu and the power
angle  in this case.
