Field Study 1 Episode 2
Use the observation guide and matrices provided for you to document your
observations.
Read the following statements carefully. Then write your observation report on the
provided space. Your teacher may also recommend another observation checklist
if a more detailed observation is preferred.
Physical
1. Observe their motor skills how they carry themselves, how they move, walk, run,
go up the stairs, etc.
2. Are gross movements clumsy or deliberate/smooth?
3. How about their motor skills? Writing, drawing, etc.
Social
1. Describe how they interact with teachers and other adults.
2. Note how they also interact with peers. What do they talk about? What are their
concerns?
Emotional
1. Describe the emotional disposition or temperament of the learners. (happy, sad,
easily cries, mood-shifts)
2. How do they express their wants/needs? Can they wait?
3. How do they handle frustrations?
4. Describe their level of confidence as shown in their behavior. Are they self
conscious?
Cognitive
1. Describe their ability to use words to communicate their ideas. Note their
language proficiency.
2. Describe how they figure out things. Do they comprehend easily? Look for
evidence of their thinking skills.
3. Were there opportunities for problem solving? Describe how they showed
problem solving abilities.

Record the data you gathered about the learners’ characteristics and needs in
this matrix. This will allow you to compare the characteristics and needs for
learners at different levels.

Write the most salient developmental characteristics of the learners you observed.
Based on these characteristics think of implications for the teacher.

1. While you were observing the learners, did you recall your own experiences
when you were their age? What similarities or differences do you have with the
learners you observed?
In my grade 6 days,as far as I remember I am capable of reading difficult words but not that very difficult
unlike the learners that I’ve observed because some of them don’t know how pronounce word and when the
teacher ask them to read the word on the screen, their voice became weak. I can also answer whatever the teacher
asks me about our lesson, unlike the learners today that when the teacher asks them, they became mute, maybe
because they are not listening to the discussion of the teacher. I am also able to do an experiments especially in
our science class but in my observation, they’re just looking at the television and just observing the experiments
that is playing on the screen.
In some way, I am just like them. Love to play sports, engaging in the activities inside and outside of the
classroom. And sometimes, when the teacher is discussing, I am also discussing with my classmate that is why
sometimes my teacher scolded me because I am not listening to her.
2. Think of a teacher you cannot forget for positive or negative reasons. How did
she/he help or not help you with your needs (physical, emotional, social, and
cognitive? How did it affect you?
The teacher that I cannot forget is my teacher when I was on my grade 6. She is my role model up until
now. Some people say she is a very strict teacher but I believe she is just teaching us to be strong be more serious
and focus on our study. In terms of physical needs, she always told me to eat healthy foods and do exercise
everyday. In my emotional needs, she always told me to be strong, and don’t be so weak when problems come in
my way because there God on our side. In my social needs, she always told me to be nice to the people who is
also nice to me. She told me also that when I encounter new people that is hard to be friends with, still I need to
be nice and don’t be rude. And lastly, in my cognitive needs, she always told me to think positively. Make a right
decision in life because she believes that what we are today, it affects our future someday.
Those teachings and advises that my teacher told me, really had a big impact in my life today. Being
positive, being strong, having faith with God helps me a lot. That is why I am very happy and I am proud to say
that she is my teacher, me hero.
Which is your favorite theory of development. How can this guide you as a future
teachers? Clip some readings about this theory and paste them here.
Cognitive learning involves thinking about concepts and ideas, motoric learning involves doing things
and sociocultural learning involves interacting with others.
Lev Vygotsky's theory highlights the role of culture in child's development of cognitive abilities such as
reasoning and communication. According to Vygotsky's theory, in a society adults foster cognitive
development in children by engaging them in meaningful and challenging activities.
As a future teacher, this cognitive theory of Lev Vygotsky is very helpful in teaching my students. It is
given that the learners will learn from me, and also I can learn from them. So when I teach learners, I need to be
more aware of their skills, their capability, and how they react inside and outside of the classroom, and also on
how they interact with their classmates. It will guide me on how will I foster the mind of my learners.
Vygotsky's theory suggests that each stage builds upon the previous ones, and he believed that adults
learn from observing children. He also believed that children learn through play, and that play is a form of
sociocultural learning. His work has become an integral part of contemporary psychology.
To illustrate his point, Vygotsky gave the example of a boy playing with blocks. When the boy plays with
the blocks, he learns how to manipulate objects, and then later uses those skills to build structures. As he
continues to play, he begins to understand the concept of gravity and eventually develops the ability to read
books.
