Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND IT’S BACKGROUND

Introduction

There is no doubting that technology, particularly computers, laptops, and phones, has

become an integral part of many people's daily lives in our generation, particularly among

students. Everyone uses technological devices on a regular basis, regardless of age. On the one

hand, they make our lives easier and simpler, but on the other, their excessive usage can be

harmful to their users' physical and mental health.

Depending on how a user uses technology, it can have both beneficial and harmful

effects. A device that can be used for communication, information gathering, entertainment, and

knowledge mining makes people reliant on technology which may have an impact on their daily

lives.

The main objective of this study is to determine the effects of usage of gadgets to the

study habits of the Grade 12 students at Cipriano P. Primicias National High School during the

school year 2022-2023. It examined how long students used their gadgets for and how these

gadgets affect the student’s behavior.

According to Statista Research Department (2020), Philippines has approximately 79

million smartphone users, reflecting an upward trend since 2017. It was forecasted that by 2025,

there would be around 91.5 million smartphone users in the country.

1
Cipriano P. Primicias National High School has 646 Senior High School students

enrolled in the School Year 2022-2023, composed of 345 students in Grade 11, and 301 students

in Grade 12. Based on our pre-survey, only 2 Senior High School students in Cipriano P.

Primicias National High School don’t have cellphones. The percentage of the Senior High

School students that have a cellphone is 99.69%. Because of the large number of students using

gadgets, the researchers became interested to conduct a study on the usage of gadgets affecting

the study habits of the senior high school students.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURES AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the related literature and studies, foreign and local which provided

the researcher the needed information and direction for the completion of the study

Related Literatures

A gadget is a small tool or device with a specific useful purpose and function. Gadgets

tend to be more unusual or cleverly designed than normal technology. In today’s life, tasks are

maximized with the use of modern gadgets. It is easier to accomplish daily tasks and people are

also able to do work with efficiency. One cannot even dare to imagine life without smart phones,

cell phones, laptops, tablets, iPods and so on (Tech Crates, 2012).

The findings of the study conducted by Balbaguio (2022) on the effectiveness of

electronic gadgets proved and showed that students knew how to be responsible and educated

themselves with regard to the ill effect of the various devices. It could be inferred that in using

electronic gadgets in an educational manner, gadgets could be a foundation of good, strong,

progressive and effective students in the class. In the context of the level of proficiency on the

use of electronic gadgets and study habit of senior high school students provide the readers a

detail of the educational awareness in using electronic devices. All the respondents regardless of

length of years of exposure in gadgets were “good”. However, Grade 12 students stood out to

5
have a “very good” academic performance in the class. Probably, the Grade 12 student believes

that electronic gadgets are essential to the development of their academic routine.

Gross (2009) described in his article that people are very frequent in use of media and

modern technologies in communication at home or at work and feel hard to survive in the

absence of modern means of communications. With the advent rapid new technologies; digital

societies are shaping all across and people are relying mainly on these resources from

information, education, and entertainment to social interaction.

An article written by Sarla (2019) states that prolonged usage of electronic devices can

have negative effects on the eyes, wrist, arm, and muscles in the neck. Due to their decreased

face-to-face engagement, people who use their cell phones excessively are more likely to feel

that their social relationships are not supportive and gratifying and that they are not actively

promoting the happiness and well-being of others. Smartphone overuse may lead to development

of repetitive stress and may affect the human body adversely. In a study by Bian (2014), as cited

by Sarla states that in Mainland China, information was acquired from a sample of 414

university students utilizing an online survey. The Smartphone Addiction Scale was developed

as a result of exploratory factor analysis, which found five symptoms of smartphone addiction:

obsession, inability to regulate need, productivity loss, disregard of detrimental effects, and

feeling anxious and lost. According to the findings, a person is more likely to get addicted to

their smartphone if they scored higher on the loneliness and shyness scales. Additionally, this

study demonstrates that loneliness was the most potent predictor that negatively impacted both

bonding and bridging social capital.

6
Related Studies

In a study conducted by Menorca et Al. (2017) on the impact of gadgets in learning

among grade 11 students in Urdaneta City National High School, cellphones were always used

by the students, computers were sometimes used by the students and tablets were seldom used by

the students in learning. The use of gadgets has a moderately positive impact in learning because

of its features that extend the ability of the students to do more things but it also has a slightly

negative impact because students are most likely to be distracted by it. There was no significant

correlation between the frequency of use and the impact of gadgets which means the frequency

of the use of gadgets does not affect its impact but instead, it was based on how we use it.

According to a study conducted by Hedge A. (2019), Although use of electronic gadgets

are not the sole leading cause to any health problems, but they do contribute significantly to a

variety of mental and physical health disorders: obesity, sleep disorders, ophthalmic disorders,

aggressive behaviour etc.

In a study titled “An Educational Study on Gadget Addiction and Mental Health among

Gen Z” by Surat (2021) concluded that gadget addiction has an impact on the users’ academic,

socialization and mental health. Gadget addiction among students not only distracts their

academic performance, but also contributes to their physical, emotional and cognitive problems.

Hence, efforts have been attempted to rationalize the smart and controlled use of the gadgets

among Gen Z in order to enhance their time management, achieve good academic performance

thus maintaining a more positive level of mental health. The implications of this study are useful

to academics and heavy gadget users and those who are hooked with their gadgets in their

everyday life. Further studies in this area are needed to delve deeper into other issues related to

each element of gadget addiction in order to reinforce the research framework which will in turn

7
develop a standard guide for controlling gadget use in Malaysia. Elhai et al. (2017) revealed that

Gen Z users spent 16 hours per day on average using a gadget. This implies the users cannot live

without their electronic gadget. Thupayagale-Tshweneagae et al. (2014) state that people who are

more frequent in using gadgets for the purpose of emotional support are likely inclined towards

gadget addiction. Correlation analysis shows that gadget addiction has a significant but very

weak relationship with quality of sleep and the level of anxiety. Instead, addiction has been

found to have a significant and positive correlation with levels of depression and anxiety level.

Hence, this suggests there is a linear and positive relationship between quality of sleep,

depression, anxiety and stress with gadget addiction.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter describes the research design, the respondents, instruments used, and the

statistical tools applied.

Research Design

This study will utilize the use of survey research design in order to gather data by using

questionnaires to get precise answers and present the findings in an accurate way. This kind of

study permits the use of numerous techniques for participant recruitment, data collection, and

instrumentation while being cost-effective and efficient. Surveys and questionnaires will be used

to collect and assess the study habits of the students such as their behaviors with using gadgets

like mobile phones in their daily lives. The data gathered will aid the researchers in identifying

the effects of gadgets to the study habits of the senior high school students in Cipriano P.

Primicias National High School.

10
Sources of Data

The data were gathered from thirty (30) grade 12 students enrolled during the school year

2022 – 2023 in Cipriano P. Primicias National High School. In this study, simple random

sampling will be utilized to select the participants.

Instrumentation and Data Collection

This study will utilize survey questionnaires which contains questions prepared by the

researchers. The instrument made by the researchers will be validated by experts using the

content validity questionnaire prepared by the researchers. The data collected from surveys is

then statistically analyzed to draw meaningful research conclusions. The results of the survey

will be collated, analyzed, interpreted and presented in tabular forms

Tools for Data Analysis

Different statistical tools were used to determine the impact of gadgets in learning. The

frequency of use of gadgets and the effects of gadgets to the study habits were determined using

the percentage and the Average Weighted Mean method (AWM). In computing for the

percentage, the formula is as follows,

Where:

f P = Percentage
P = n x 100=%
f = frequency

n = number of responses

11
In interpreting the computed AWM point obtained, the formula is as follows,

Where:

AMW =
∑x AMW = Average Weighted Mean
N
∑ x = the sum of all scores
N = total number of respondents

For determining the significant relationship between the usage of gadgets and study

habits of students, Pearson r was used,
