Video2 Lesson Plan

This lesson plan is for an Algebra II class and focuses on teaching complex numbers and simplifying radicals. The plan outlines using a bellringer, demonstration, note-taking, and a formative assessment on Canvas. The objective is for students to recognize imaginary numbers, simplify square roots, and solve one-step quadratics by taking the square root. Accommodations are provided for diverse learners as outlined in IEPs and 504 plans. Assessment will include observation during activities and a module quiz later in the week.

Video2 Lesson plan 1

Name: Anastasia Carrillo-Mariano

Cooperating Teacher: Carla Farber

Subject & Grade Level: Algebra II 10-12th Grade

Lesson Topic: Complex Numbers and Simplifying Radicals

Date: 10/02/23 Estimated Time: 80 minutes

1. Standards

NACS in mathematics A.REI.B.4.

Solve quadratic equations in one variable. Solve quadratic equations by taking square roots.

2. Teaching Model
Expository and Demonstration

 Demonstration
 TECHNIQUE 36: Means of Participation
-Volunteers
-Whiteboards
-Cold Call
-Everyone writes

3. Objective(s)
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to recognize an imaginary/complex number,
simplify square roots, and solve one-step quadratics by taking the square root.

4. Materials/Resources

 Instructor’s exemplar
 Bellringer
 Elmo
 Class set of whiteboards, markers, and erasers

5. Instructional Procedures

a. Introduction/Motivation and Engagement

 This lesson extends student knowledge of quadratics and solving equations. Students
apply prior knowledge/skills from Algebra I, such as taking the square root of a number
and the product property) to imaginary numbers to simplify radicals and take the square
root of a negative number.

b. Activities or Learning Experiences

1. 00:00-00:10 Introduction/Bellringer

 Introduce today’s plans and objective

 Get students started on their Bellringer “Have you heard of an imaginary number? If so,
what is it? If not, explain what you think it is and where it comes from”
 Means of Participation- everyone writes independently.
 Means of Participation- call volunteer during class review of bellringer

2. 00:10-00:50 M3L1 Notes

 Instructor will write notes while everyone writes notes
 Students will complete select examples on their whiteboard
 Instructor will Cold Call for participation on select examples

4. 00:50-00:80 Canvas Formative Assessment (FA) M3L1:

 Instruct students to get out their Chromebook and get started on their FAM3L1
assignment on canvas
 Circulate the room to grade students notes based on correction out of 10
 If students finish early, students are to re-do open FA as the quarter grades are clsong
 If students finish early, they may start gathering and preparing all their warmups to be
turned in next class

c. Closure

 Recap the day’s objective. Reiterate the goal is to recognize imaginary numbers and
simply square root. Inform students during our next class, we will extend on example
three, solve by taking the square root.

d. Extension/Contingency Plan

 If the lesson needs to be cut short significantly, assign the canvas assignment as
homework
 If an abundant amount of time is left and a majority of students are finishing early, give
students an exit ticket. “simplify the square roots √−81 √ 322 √ 8”

6. Accommodations, Modifications, and Differentiations for Diverse Learners:

 Instructor will follow IEP and 504 plan recommendations

Possible accommodations:

 Provide qualifying students additional time to complete the assignment

 Qualifying students may use google translate
Video2 Lesson plan 3

Possible modifications

 Qualifying students may complete a shorter version of the assignment

 Qualifying students may take breaks in between tasks
 Qualifying students may be given a printed copy of the notes

7. Assessment/Evaluation of Learning

Formative: Active observation of students' whiteboard activity and on their canvas assignment.

Summative: A module quiz on lessons 1-4 will be given on 10/13

8. Homework Assignment

 No homework is required as the objective will be met in class. Students who did not
finish their canvas assignment titled “FA M3L1” may finish at home

9. Post-Lesson Reflection

At the end of the lesson, students finish their multiple-choice formative assessment assignment
quickly so they can get on their phones. When the assignment is on canvas it is hard to check
their score to ensure they reached the objective of scoring an 80%. Next time, I will try to chunk
the lesson, so students are working the entire class period and try a paper assignment, so students
do not rush and have their assignment checked before turning it in. This will ensure the target
score is met and misconceptions can be addressed in class rather than the next day after getting
on canvas and looking through the assignments.
