COURSE DESCRIPTION

This is a non-credit, intermediate level English course which focuses on reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
The course consists of twelve hours of classroom instruction over a 12-week semester. In this course, students
develop intermediate language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students’ work is mostly focused
on integrating the reading-writing and speaking-listening skills into direct class activities. Students receive
blended online instruction through My English Lab which reinforces targeted skills taught. Students prepare for
the TOEFL as a part of the curriculum.

Pre-requisites:
TOEFL Score of 440-479 or IELP 085.

Course Objectives
To provide students with the necessary writing and critical reading skills that enable them to write and edit essays
of various rhetorical modes.

INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of the course, students will be able to:


1. Write well-organized Opinion paragraphs
2. Write well-organized Compare- contrast essays
3. Revise their own writings as well as others
4. Edit their own writings as well as others
5. Read critically various types of texts

Passing Policy

1. Students who score below 60 will repeat IELP095.


2. Students who score between 60- 74 will pass to IELP100.
3. Students who score 75 and above will pass to ENGL101.

CLASS AND LAB POLICIES

Class Attendance
In this course, you are expected to:

 Attend all classes online from the first day of the semester.
 Be punctual and attend the whole online session.
 Be in every class. If you are absent for more than 15% of a course (4 hours), you will be
withdrawn from the class.
 Participate in class discussions
 Send an email in case of absence.

Class Discussion and Participation


Active participation in classroom discussions is expected. Discussions may be extended beyond the classroom
(via teams) to Moodle, wiki spaces, and email, as instructed by your teacher.
You are expected to:
 Be an active participant in class and in the learning process.
 Join the class having read relevant chapters or articles, prepared to participate in discussion.
 Turn in daily assignments on time.
 Freely add relevant information and your opinion to the discussions.
 Be an active participant

Help sessions will be organized at convenient times as needed upon request from students.

Make-up Tests and Late Homework Policy


NO makeup tests will be given and late assignments or projects will not be accepted unless the reason is beyond
the student's control.

Expected Behavior
You are expected to conduct yourself in an ethical and professional manner. This includes attending all online
class activities; meeting deadlines; observing common courtesies to fellow students, teachers, and staff; being
honest; and making a diligent effort to learn. Any disruptive behavior or academic dishonesty will not be
tolerated.

Policy on Cheating and Plagiarism:


An indispensable ingredient for attaining success, credibility and respect lies in maintaining honesty in all
academic work. Students are expected to present as their own only that which is clearly their own work in tests
and in any material submitted for credit. Anyone found guilty of plagiarism will receive a zero for the work
presented. Students caught cheating for the second time in the same course will receive a grade of “F” in the
course. Academic dishonesty is manifested in:
 copying from other students or submitting as yours work done by someone else
 copying from written sources such as internet, books, magazines, without acknowledging sources
 cheating in exams or quizzes
 delivering the same presentation in two different courses

Withdrawal Policy
Students wishing to withdraw from one or more courses must follow the withdrawal procedure provided by the
Registrar’s Office. Students withdrawing from a course after the Drop/Add period and before the withdrawal
deadline will receive a W for the course.
The deadline for withdrawal for Fall 2023 is Nov. 17

Email Communications
An email list server has been created for all students and for each of the programs to notify students of relevant
information. Students are expected to check their RHU email accounts at least once a day for information
regarding their courses, programs and events.
