LESSON PLAN in MATHEMATICS 6

I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standards: The learner demonstrates understanding of rate and speed,
and of area and surface area of plane and solid/space figures.

B. Performance Standards: The learner is able to apply knowledge of speed, area,

and surface area of plane and solid/space figures in mathematical problems and
real-life situations.

C. Learning Competencies/Objectives: The learner calculates speed, distance, and

time. (M6ME-IIIg17)

II. CONTENT
 Measurement – Calculating Speed, Distance, and Time

III. LEARNING RESOURCES

A. References
1. Teacher’s Guide Pages 100-102, Curriculum Guide Page 161
2. Learners Materials Pages 253-259
3. Additional Materials from Learning Resource (LR) Portal
B. Other Learning Resources
- Computer Assisted Instructions, charts, number cards 0-9, printed exercises,
laptop, speaker and projector
Value Focus: Time is precious!

IV. PROCEDURES
A. Preliminary Activities
1. Drill
Game Opener: “Quick Raise”
Find the value of x in the following equations. The first who can raise their
hand will receive a chance to answer and will receive award if the answer is
correct. Equations will be flashed on the slide decks.
1. x – 10 = 7
2. 5x – 2 = 10
3. 3x + 8 = 20
4. 5x = 35
5. x/4 = 2x - 1

2. Review
Another game: “Pass, Stop!”
Another game named “Pass, Stop!” will be given to the class. A basketball
will be passed while the class is singing the Leron, Leron Sinta with proper tune
and diction. The moment the teacher says STOP, the one who is holding the
ball will stand and answer the equation flashed on the slide. Directions: Find the
value of a in the following equation given that, b = 10, c = 12.
1. a = bc
2. a = b/c
3. a = c/b
4. 2a = bc/2
5. a/2 = b/c

3. Motivation
Ask the following questions:
 Filipinos are fond of traveling out of town and out of the country. It is really
exciting to go out of the country. Because of technology, we can avail of
different promos for cheap airfare as well as accommodation. Have you ever
tried to do so?
 The pupils will talk about the places they have been to. They will estimate the
distance and time they traveled.

 Present to the class the topic of the day and the lesson objective.
Topic of the day:
Calculating the speed, distance and time.

Lesson Objective:
At the end of the lesson, the pupils are able to calculate the speed,
distance and time (M6ME-IIIg17)

B. Developmental Activities
1. Presentation
Problem Opener Strategy.
Present this problem to the class.

“Jonathan bought a new car. He drove his car from Manila to Baguio City at an
average speed of 65 kilometers per hour, for a total of 3.75 hours. How far did he
travel?”

Have the pupils read the problem. Use the DRTA Approach while reading to
elaborate every part of the problem.
Then ask:
 What are the given in the problem?
 What is asked?
 How will you solve the problem?
 What equation will be formed?
 How do you find distance given the speed and time?

2. Teaching/Modelling
 Lead the pupils in analyzing the problem.
 Discuss:
 In this problem, we were given a speed of 65 kilometers per hour and a time
of 4.5 hours. To find the final distance traveled, we can simply multiply the
given speed and time:
 So, Distance = 65 X 4.5 = 292.5. Thus, Jonathan traveled 292.5 kilometers.
 Present the relationship between speed, distance and time in a formula.
Explain each formula.
 Speed = Distance/Time
 Distance = speed X time
 Time = Distance/Speed
 Elaborate the definition of average speed.
 Average speed is a measure of the distance traveled in a given period of
time; it is sometimes referred to as the ratio of distance and time.
 Average Speed = distance/time
 Share also a table with list of units commonly used for speed and their
abbreviations.
Distance Time Speed Abbreviations
Miles Hours Miles per hour mph
Kilometers Hours Kilometers per hour km/h or kph
Meters Seconds Meters per second m/s
Feet Seconds Feet per second f.p.s or ft. per sec.
Centimeters Seconds Centimeters per second cm/sec or cm/s
a. Show some problem
To deepen pupil’s understanding of the concept, the class will answer the
following problems.
1. If a car travels 100 kilometers in 2 hours, find the average speed.
2. A world-record holder ran 800 meters in 86 seconds. What was his average
speed rounded to the nearest tenth?

b. Present another problem

To deepen pupil’s understanding of the concept, the class will answer the
following problems. Have them show and discuss their answers.
1. Roy drives at an average of 45 mph on a journey of 135 miles. How long does
the journey takes?
2. Vincent’s motorcycle has an average speed of 50km/h. If he drives it for 4 ½
hours, how far does he travel?

c. Generalization
Ask:
 How do you find the speed?
 How do you find the time?
 How do you find the distance?

3. Guided Practice
