1.2 Experiment Name: Study of Uncontrolled Rectifier (Half wave Rectifier, Full Wave Rectifier
with 2 diodes & 4 diodes), Controlled Rectifier (Half wave rectifier, Full Wave Rectifier with 2
diodes & 4 diodes).
1.3 Objectives:
To examine the operation and effectiveness of unregulated rectifiers for half- and full-
wave signals.
To evaluate the operation and effectiveness of half-wave and full-wave-controlled
rectifier.
To be aware of the delay angle of a controlled series resistive branch and obtain the
rectifier's regulated and uncontrolled waveforms.
1.4 Theory:
Half Wave Rectifier: By passing either the negative or positive half-cycle of the
waveform and blocking the other, a half-wave rectifier transforms an AC signal to DC.
Half-wave rectifiers are simpler to build than full-wave rectifiers and only require one
diode[1].
The diode is forward biased at time t0 and current passes through the resistor at
time t1.
T=T1: The diode goes off and the current drops to zero.
T1–T2: No current flows because E is negative, indicating that the diode is
reverse biased and in the off state.
Full Wave Rectifier: Four rectification diodes are used by the full wave rectifier to
transform each waveform cycle's two halves into a pulsing DC signal. In the previous
power diodes lesson, we covered how to connect smoothing capacitors across the load
resistance to reduce the ripple or voltage changes on a direct DC supply. This approach
might be appropriate for low-power applications. Using the input voltage every half-
cycle as opposed to every other half-cycle is one way to improve this[2].
