Ref 8 Pushover Presentation

This document provides an overview of pushover analysis, which is a nonlinear static analysis method used to evaluate the seismic performance of structures. It summarizes: 1) Pushover analysis involves developing a pushover curve showing the relationship between base shear and roof displacement, and using this curve to estimate the target displacement at the performance point. 2) It provides an alternative to nonlinear time history analysis for evaluating inelastic structural response and is useful for performance-based design. 3) The capacity spectrum method (ATC 40) is described for converting the pushover curve to a capacity curve and determining the performance point by intersecting with the demand curve.

Pushover Analysis

Introduction
• It is nonlinear static analysis and it hasn’t been
approved by ASCE 7.
• It’s used by ASCE 41-6 for seismic rehabilitation and
it’s used for design new structure by FEMA p-750
Why pushover?
• Performance-based need inelastic
deformation or damage structure which
cannot be obtained from elastic analysis and
non-linear THA is time-consuming
• It is good enough for design, however it
cannot predict response of structure except
non-linear THA can do that
Basic Overview of Pushover Analysis
• Pushover consists of two parts:
– Develop pushover curve
– Predict target displacement
• Capacity spectrum approach (ATC 40)
• Simplified approach (FEMA 273, NEHRP)
• Uncoupled modal response history
• Modal pushover
Capacity Curve (ATC 40 approach)
• Create model and design based on gravity load
and ELF or RS
• Apply plastic hinge to the model
• Analyze modal analysis
• Assume lateral inertial force distribution
• Construct pushover curve
• Convert pushover curve to capacity curve
• Develop demand curve
• Calculate performance point

Adjust load to third yield

Target Displacement
• Intersection point between capacity curve and demand curve
(response spectrum) is performance point
Converting Pushover Curve to Capacity Curve
Converting Traditional RS to ADRS
Combined Curves
Target Displacement Conversion
• Computed target displacement is for assumed
SDOF. It shall be converted to the MDOF by
multiplying it by first mode modal
participation factor and the modal amplitude
of the first mode shape
• Then calculate base shear based on modified
target displacement
Pushover Analysis using SAP2000

• Apply inertial lateral force by using control displacement
at roof
• Enter sufficient number of steps to increase lateral load
• Analyze model
• Increase lateral load by changing analyzed steps
• Select maximum limit state for example CP
• Draw pushover
