LEARNING OUTCOMES:
At the end of module, the students will be able to:
1. Explain explicitly the three (3) areas of substantive knowledge in social work
2. Express understanding and appreciation on social work curriculum plan
3. Enumerated and discussed the essential elements in social work practice
4. Define, enumerated the social work helping process (steps in social work problem – solving), interventive
roles of social worker during the process; the helping professional relationships with clients
5. Express understanding and appreciation on the social work helping process

CONTENT:

THE KNOWLEDGE FOUNDATION OF SOCIAL WORK

* Social work derives knowledge → from variety of sources

 borrowed knowledge generated and tested in the basic discipline (psychology,


anthropology, sociology, etc.)
 knowledge from other professions
 knowledge from the profession itself

* Tested knowledge, hypothetical knowledge, assumptive knowledge

* Knowledge Base of Social Work

 a comprehensive topic which encompasses the facts and theories,


skills and attitudes necessary for effective, efficient practice

Social Work Curriculum Plan
 generally structured along the 3 areas of substantive knowledge in social
work:
1.) Social Welfare Policy and Services → also referred to as Social Welfare Policy, Programs and
Services (SWPPS)

2.) Human Behavior and Social Environment (HBSE)

3.) Social Work Practice/Methods

4.) Field Instruction (4 area) → aimed at providing the students with opportunities for
integration of learning in the three (3) areas by way of supervised social work practice in the
selected settings

* This Completes the Curriculum Plan of Social Work

* The existing knowledge in the social work profession pertinent to these 3 areas → either borrowed
from other disciplines or developed by social workers – found in social work books, journals, other
professional literature in social work; knowledge borrowed from medicine, law, political science, public
administration, economics, psychology, sociology, etc.

o the knowledge components in the Social Welfare policy and Services and the Social Work
Practice Areas → mainly come these knowledge
o the knowledge component in the Human Behavior and Social Environment – great rely on
borrowed knowledge from the biological sciences, the psychological sciences, social sciences as
humanities
