Flooding in Karaganda Oblast
Flooding caused big problems in Karaganda Oblast. The authorities had to move many people
from their homes to keep them safe. About 1,760 houses in 35 villages got flooded, and sadly,
340 animals died.
On April 11, 2015, the Jumabek dam near the village with the same name broke because of
melting snow, causing water to flood the homes of local people. This information came from the
Emergency Situations Department of Karaganda Oblast.
The weather got warmer, and the temperature rose to 20 degrees Centigrade between March 23
and 29. This made the snow melt quickly and flooded villages in East Kazakhstan Oblast and
four districts in Karaganda Oblast.
Another wave of floods happened on April 6 because of the warm weather, again reaching 20
degrees Centigrade. This put more areas at risk of flooding in Karaganda and Akmola Oblasts in
central Kazakhstan. People started a group on VKontakte to help the victims by collecting
clothes, blankets, food, and other essential items for the evacuees. They started collecting things
at 10 am in Saryarka mall. People brought clothes, children's clothes, diapers, food, toys,
personal care items, detergents, and blankets. The first car went to those who needed it the most,
and they continued collecting items until Friday.
