Group 7-Direct Method

The document discusses the Direct Method approach to teaching language. It provides 3 key points: 1. The Direct Method teaches language directly without using the learner's native language, establishing associations between the target language and meanings through demonstration and dramatization. 2. Some key principles of the Direct Method include conducting instruction exclusively in the target language, teaching everyday vocabulary and sentences initially through questions and answers, and inductive grammar instruction. 3. Potential advantages include motivating students to use the target language spontaneously and making learning more interesting through the use of realia and activities like questions and answers, reading aloud, and dictation. Potential disadvantages include the need for creative teachers and large class sizes limiting its effectiveness.

Direct Method
A method of teaching language directly
establishing a direct or immediate association
between experience and expression, between the
English word, phrase or idiom and its meaning
through demonstration, dramatization without the
use of mother tongue. (1)
Direct Method
The Direct Method, it’s sometimes called the Natural
Method. Not limited to but often used in teaching foreign
languages, the method refrains from using the learners’
native language and uses only the target language.

It’s named ‘’direct’’, because meaning should be

connected directly with the target language without
translation into the native language. (2)
Direct Method is also known as:

Natural Phonetical Anti- Reform

Method (1) Method Grammatical Method
Method
History of Direct Method
It was established in Germany and France
around 1990, and it was an answer to the
dissatisfaction with the older Grammar
Translation Method, which teaches students
grammar and vocabulary through direct
translations and thus focuses on written
language.

German Maximilian Berlitz (2)

History of Direct Method
In the mid and late 19th century, Europe experienced a wave of
increasing opportunities of communication, due to industrialization
and international trade and travel. A need was felt to develop oral
proficiency in foreign language. (1)
Language teachers had already found Grammar-translation method
inadequate and ineffective in developing communicative ability in
learners.
They strongly advocate an alternative method in which language was
presented in contexts and the mother tongue was avoided.
Its principal advocates were Prendergast and Sauveur who proposed
what they called Natural Method that suggest radical change from
grammar translation that later on came to be known Direct Method.
Aims of Direct Method
01
Direct method aims to build a direct relation between
experience and language, word and idea, thought and
expression, (2)

02
intends for student to learn how to communicate in the
target language,

based on the assumption that the learner should experience

03 the new language in the same way as he/she experienced
his/ her mother tongue.
Theoretical Assumption
Language can be learnt only through demonstration. Instead of
analytical procedures of explaining grammar rules, students
must be encourage to use language naturally and
spontaneously so that they induce grammar. (1)
The learning of second language was seen as parallel to the
acquisition of the child’s first language.
This method therefore emphasize the importance of sounds,
simple sentences and direct association of language with
object and person of immediate environment - the classroom,
the home, the garden and others.
The Main Principles of the Direct Method

1. Classroom instructions are

conducted exclusively in
the target language. (2)
The Main Principles of the Direct Method

2. Only everyday
vocabulary and sentences
are taught during the initial
phase; grammar, reading
and writing are introduced
in intermediate phase.

3. Oral communication
skills are built up in a
carefully graded
progression organized
around question-and-
answer exchanges between
teachers and students in
small, intensive class.
The Main Principles of the Direct Method

4. Grammar is taught
inductively.

5. Concrete vocabulary is
taught through
demonstration, objects,
and pictures; abstract
vocabulary is taught by
association of ideas.
The Main Principles of the Direct Method

6. Both speech and

listening comprehension
are taught. (1)

7. Correct pronunciation
and grammar are
emphasized.

8. Student should be
speaking at least 89% of
the time during the lesson.
The Main Principles of the Direct Method

9. Students are taught from

inception to ask questions
as well as answer them.
Strategies for Teaching using
‘’Direct Method’’
Question & Answer Exercise (2)
Teacher ask student using target language and student answer
in full sentences.
Reading Aloud
Student read sections of passages, plays or dialogs out loud.

Dictation
Teacher read passage aloud various amount of times at various
tempos, students writing down what they hear.
Student Self Correct
Teacher facilitates opportunities for student to self correct
using follow up questions, tones and others.
Strategies for Teaching using
‘’Direct Method’’
Paragraph Writing (1)
Students write paragraphs in their own using the target language
and various models.
Conversation Practice
Teacher asks students and students ask students questions
using the target language.

Fill-In-The-Blank Exercise
Items use target language only and inductive rather that explicit
grammar rules.
