A. Read the following dialog, understand it. Answer the questions.


Host : Now what do you think about this? Calculators will be banned from schools.
Can you believe it? Students will have to do maths, physics, and chemistry
without calculators. Will students be smart without your calculator? So what do
you think? Phone me now on 021 844 8895. Hello?
Caller 1 : Hello Sandra. Look, I like the idea that kids without calculators will be
smarter. If you are using a calculator all your life, it means you cheat yourself.
You’re not really learning because the calculator does it for you! A person in
my class last year snuck a calculator with him into the classroom and about a
week before school ending, the teacher found it in a drawer of his desk and took
it from him. Guess what? He didn’t know how to do any Maths because he used
to sit at the back and use calculator. He did not pass sixth grade! I do believe
that the idea of banning calculators from the classrooms will be a good decision.
Host : I see. You believe that kids with calculators aren’t really smart. I was in tenth
grade, I needed a special type of calculator called a graphing calculator. It is
used in a difficult type of maths called trigonometry. This kind of maths needs a
calculator. I relied on it for trigonometry, but I preferred to use a pencil and
paper for all other types of maths. So, I can understand why you have your
opinion. OK, 021 844 8895 is my number. Hello?
Caller 2 : Hello Sandra, I don’t think it is a good idea. If it is a student’s goal, they
should probably learn some maths, skills without a calculator. But if a teacher’s
goal is for students to be able to cope with mathematical problems in our
society, most of the courses should be taught with the assistance of calculators. I
hope very strongly that schools will discuss the idea of banning calculators from
classrooms before taking a decision on the matter.
Host : Let me say that you think the use of calculators in class depends on the goal of
the maths class.
Caller 2 : You’re right. I doubt that kids without calculators will be smarter. Although a
calculator works faster than adding things up in your brain, the person using it
still has to figure out the formula for solving the problem.

Helpful and Harmful Effects of Technology

1. Technology has helped people in many different ways. First of all , it allows them to make more
things now than they did in the past. For example, 150 years ago, people and animals did most of the
work on farms in the United States. Today, machines do most of the work on U.S. Farms.
2. Another wa technology has helped people is by giving them more time to relax. Because
machines can do so much work, people today do not have to work as hard as people in the past.
Technology has also made work easier and safer.

3. Today, technology helps people meet goals that would have been impossible a hundred years ago.
But it also presents great challenges, or issues to think about. One challenge is finding ways to end
the harmful effects of technology. Another is how to make sure the same problems won’t(will not)
happen with new technologies.

4. Another problem with technology is that it lets people produce more powerful weapons. Such
weapons make the world a more dangerous place.

5. The technology that helped bring about our modern society began about 200 years ago. At that
time, more and more factories were built. These factories began using machines powered by steam.
The machines could make things faster and often cheaper than people could make them by hand.
This kind of technology affected people’s lives more and more. It has had both helpful and harmful
effects on the world.

6. Computers and other machines have replaced people in the workplace. It’s often hard for these
people to find new jobs.

7. Pollution is one of the most harmful effects of modern technology. Many countries face air,
water, soil, and noise pollution. Our technology also uses up many natural resources, such as oil,
wood, and coal. Many of these resources cannot be replaced after they are used.
