Learning Task 5.1

This document discusses two learning tasks about prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination. For the first task, the author shares a personal experience from their youth of prejudicing and stereotyping indigenous people without understanding them. The author now realizes this was wrong and feels shame. For the second task, the author identifies discrimination against illiterate people in their locality as a form of social injustice, as it denies them opportunities while unequally treating members of society.

Learning Task 5.

1
Prejudice and Stereotype

Name: Jemarie C. Lagado Offering No.: 20-1-00003 Class Schedule: MW 7:00-

8:30

In this activity, you will do two things:

1. Briefly share a personal experience of prejudice and/or stereotyping. Sensitive

experiences will be respected and be kept confidential. The second paragraph
will be your opinion or reaction to that experience: how it made you feel, how
you reacted, and how it affects you.

If you think that you did not experience any of these since birth, try to imagine
yourself in the shoes of the IPs, as described in the discussion. And explain
your opinion or reaction towards the experience: how it made you feel, how
you reacted, and how it affects you. By situating yourself in the IPs’ place, you
will better understand how they feel every time they encounter situations that
hurt their feelings.

From what I remembered, back when I was young, the happenings in my

surroundings confused me, especially every time I bumped into once I called weird
people. Previously, every time I saw people like them, I always asked myself why
they were bothering and messing up with someone in the street and asking for
money and food. It is not because I am being selfish, but in my mind, looking for jobs
and opportunities is much better for themselves. Also, admittedly, I once disliked and
belittled people like them. I am displeased for what I knew that they don't take a
bath, look dirty, and are lazy. Now, I know that the people I am referring to weird
before are the indigenous peoples.

Today, being aware of the happenings in my surroundings and gaining knowledge

about our community helped me understand our differences in life, especially in our
living. In my experience before, I easily prejudice and stereotype indigenous people
without even knowing who they are. I am ashamed of what I did and said before. I
feel bad for them, as they are discriminated against and repelled by many. People
like them deserve to have chances and opportunities in society, as I suppose they
have the skills, talents, and knowledge that others don't have. Thus, we should be
kind and shows respect to indigenous peoples, as they are also human and deserve
to be accepted and treated well by everyone.
2. Identify and describe a specific form of discrimination within your locality. It
does not need to be like the IPs experience. It could be anything as long as, to
a certain degree, there is a denial of opportunity/ies to an individual or group
that the rest of the community is enjoying. Or it could also be the other way
around, something that only the privileged few in your locality is enjoying and
the rest of the community do not. After identifying and describing such a form
of discrimination, explain why you consider it a social injustice.

In our locality, we cannot deny the existence of discrimination, for instance, the
denial of opportunities to illiterate people in the community. These people are unable
to read and write. By that, others considered them to be someone who does not
deserve any job opportunity and worst in the community. Also, most of them are
belittled because of their situation and labeled with painful remarks by other people.
This kind of discrimination seriously affects the self-esteem and lives of illiterate
people. It is considered as social injustice because there are no fairness and
rightfulness. There is unequal treatment within a group of people in society.
Everyone deserves the chance and opportunity to make a living and support their
families, as long as it is legal and gives benefits. We should not make ourselves a
hindrance to someone's hope and scheme in life. We should put in our mind that
everyone has the skills and knowledge shown in many ways. Thus, respecting each
other is better than discriminating, as we are all different.
