Procedure
1 Table 1 shows the recommended intervals for grease lubrication. These intervals are the maximum permitted
for usual operation. Do not do more than these intervals unless differently stated. It can be necessary to
increase the frequency of servicing when the operating conditions are more dangerous.

NOTE
Do not purge lubricate the oil cooler blower or tail rotor driveshaft hanger bearings. Lubricate in
accordance with DMC-407-A-12-00-00-02A-242A-A and DMC-407-A-12-00-00-03A-242A-A.
2 If the helicopter is stored longer than 45 days without operating, purge lubricate the bearings before
returning it to service. Purge lubricate means that fresh grease is injected in the bearing to remove all of the
old grease. Purging does not apply to oil cooler blower or tail rotor driveshaft hanger bearings.
WARNING
BEFORE YOU DO THE LUBRICATION, MAKE SURE OF THE CONTENT OF GREASE
DISPENSING EQUIPMENT. IF THERE IS PARTIAL SEPARATION OF THE LUBRICATION OIL
FROM THE THICKENING AGENT, OIL CAN BE REMIXED THOROUGHLY WITH THE
THICKENING AGENT TO RESTORE THE ORIGINAL LOAD CARRYING CAPABILITIES. IF THERE
IS A LOSS OF LUBRICATING OIL FROM THE THICKENING AGENT, DISCARD THE ENTIRE
CONTENTS OF THE GREASE DISPENSING EQUIPMENT AND REPLACE WITH A SUITABLE
SUPPLY OF APPROVED LUBRICANT (IL GEN-03-93).
CAUTION
DO NOT USE HIGH CAPACITY/HIGH VELOCITY GREASE GUNS ON THE COMPONENTS. THE
USE OF HIGH CAPACITY/HIGH VELOCITY GREASE GUNS CAN RESULT IN DAMAGE.
3 If it becomes necessary to change the brand of grease, remove the used grease by purging until there is only
new grease, unless differently told.
NOTE
Before and after grease lubrication, visually examine grease fittings for the spring-loaded steel
ball. If the steel ball is not visible, does not spring back to closed position, the grease fitting shows
too much leakage, or it is difficult to apply grease during lubrication, replace the grease fitting
(BHT-ALL-SPM, Chapter 8, Standard Practices Manual). If the grease fitting is removed because
the spring-loaded ball is not visible, insert a small steel probe into the back of the grease fitting to
make sure that the steel ball is there. If the steel ball is not in the grease fitting, more investigation
is necessary to make sure that the steel ball has not moved into the component and caused
damage. Discard grease fittings that have been removed.

Do the servicing at the interval that comes first.

If the helicopter is parked outside in a heavy dew environment, purge lubricate all exposed control bearings
every seven days to make sure there are no air pockets that could trap moisture.

After each day of operation in rain or snow, or after washing the helicopter, purge to remove all trapped moisture
and to make sure a lubrication film is applied to all exposed, unprotected surfaces.

For (SN: 53000-53169 TB 407-98-11: Post) or SN: 53170-54061 It is recommended that Lubricant (C-018)
be applied every 25 hours. If necessary, application of lubricant can be extended to next inspection interval to
accommodate maintenance scheduling.

For SN: 53000-53518 or 53519-Subsequent ASB 407-02-54 “OIL COOLER INLET AIRFLOW -
IMPROVEMENTS TO” must have been done to coincide with 300 hour oil cooler blower hanger bearing
lubrication interval.

The lubrication procedure is part of the 600-hour/12-month inspection (DMC-407-A-62-00-00-00A-281A-A).

Interval can be extended to 150 hours, if TB 407-02-35, Part IV-B has been done.

Evidence of black grease pushed out from the bearing is cause for rejection. Normal colored grease (red-purple
for Mobil 28) that is pushed out from the bearing seal is not cause for rejection.

Grease (C-001) is applicable to 406-310-405-101/-103 Pre TB 407-16-119. Grease (C-172) is applicable to 406-
310-405-101/-103 Post TB 407-16-119 and 406-310-405-105.
