CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

As the world becomes increasingly digital, it's more important than ever for
students to develop strong technology literacy skills. Technology literacy is the
ability to use technology to solve problems and communicate ideas effectively.
While some students may be 'digital natives' who are already proficient in
technology, others may need more support to catch up. As such, it is important for
educators to provide opportunities for all students to develop their technology
literacy skills. Business technology literacy will be an important aspect of running
businesses in the future.

One way to do this is by incorporating technology into lessons and

assignments, giving students a chance to practice using different tools and
applications. Another way is to provide resources and support for students who
need extra help. By ensuring that all students have the opportunity to develop
strong technology literacy skills, we can prepare them for success in a rapidly
changing world. (KnowledgeHut, 2023)

In today’s world, we live in an era where technology is becoming

more and more essential in every workplace and school. Technology literacy plays
an importance in students learning because it allows them to work independently,
collaborate in groups, build effective technology skills, and learn how to
communicate, interpret and share information, data and ideas (Maryland Teacher
Technology Standards, n.d).

Page | 2
SENIOR HIGHSCHOOL

Through these technological advances in the classroom, students will be

able to engage more in the curriculum they are learning. Students will have what
is known as an active form of education in which students can cooperate, and
where combined intellect will become the centerpiece of instruction. (Jo, 2015)
The grade 11 students of STI College Koronadal shows a lot of potential when it
comes to technology related topics as the school itself specializes in Technology
development, the perceived benefits of being literate in technology will be a big
advancement for them in terms of academic success, practical learning, and better
overall comprehension.

We live in a world where technology affects every part of our daily

lives. Our professional and personal lives have been enhanced by advancements
and inventions, which have made many of our everyday chores easier to do. As
technology can help with many tasks, becoming proficient with it can be
advantageous to you in many different ways.

The effects of technology literacy on the academic success of the students

is enhanced interactivity and participation in the classroom. Furthermore, some of
the effects of technology literacy on student learning include improved general
comprehension, practical learning, time management, and blended learning
approaches.

Through this interactive approach of the researchers the students will be

able to express their challenges to be literate in technology more effectively and
so that the researchers were able to address their issues. It will also make the
study more collaborative and to have a meaningful engagement with the students.

REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE

After a thorough and in-depth search by the researchers, this chapter

contains the pertinent literature and studies. The studies and literature cited in
this chapter discuss various theories, notions, generalizations, and findings, as
well as various developments pertaining to the topic from the past to the present.
This will act as a roadmap for the researchers as they create the project. Also, by
familiarizing readers with pertinent and comparable facts to the current study, the
information in this chapter is helpful.

Foreign Literature

Information Technology literacy is an individual's ability to recognize

information, find out when using the ability, and ability to analyze information
effectively. Information literacy is increasingly important in the contemporary
environment due to rapid of technological changing. Information literacy skills
related to information technology, but it has broader implications for the individual,
the education system, and society. Nowadays, IT literacy has become a basic
requirement for individuals to be able to learn effectively and continuously in
various fields of science and learning environment (Bruce, 1999). Computer
literacy is a prerequisite to the information literacy development. Computer
literacy generally refers to the ability to use applications software that runs on the
computer. The definition of computer literacy is a having a basic understanding of
what a computer is and how using it as a resource. Requirements for computer
literacy is vary, but may include an understanding of the fundamentals of
hardware, computer systems and applications related to the relevant peripherals
(Bruce, 1999).

Although it is commonly believed that learning is enhanced through the use

of technology (U.S. Department of Education, 2001), not all share a common
understanding of what technology is. For many, technology is synonymous with
computer equipment, software, and other electronic devices, and technology
integration means using this equipment in the classroom. However, this definition
is rather narrow. Educational technology includes any tool, piece of equipment or
device--electronic or mechanical--that can be used to help students accomplish
specified learning goals (Davies, Sprague, & New, 2008b). Reasons for using
educational technologies may include saving time or improving the effectiveness
of a student’s learning efforts. Still, the uninformed or haphazard use of
technology, regardless of quantity, may in fact be evidence of a lack of what
Mishra & Koehler (2006) call technological pedagogical content knowledge or
TPACK.

Dinçer, S. Are (2018) Its important to examine knowledge, skills and

attitude, namely technology literacy, of students who would use these materials.
Although technology literacy was investigated in some studies, data collection
tools measured different variables. As knowledge, skills and attitude are different
concepts, they need to be examined together to determine literacy level.

According to (Elsa garmire & Greg Pearson, 2006) Basically, technological

literacy is an understanding of technology at a level that enables effective
functioning in a modern technological society. The committee defined
technological literacy as having three major components, or dimensions:
knowledge, capabilities, and critical thinking and decision making

(Anne Corinne Huggins & Albert D. Ritzhauptusing, 2014) technologies

are to support problem solving, critical thinking, communication, collaboration and
decision-making, is a critical 21st century skill (National Research Council, 2011,
Partnership, 2011). The National Educational Technology Plan (USDOE, 2010)
also highlights the importance of ICT literacy for student success across all

content areas, for developing skills to support lifelong learning and for providing
authentic learning opportunities that prepare students to succeed in a globally
competitive workforce.

Information technologies provide the tools for the creation, collection,

storage and use of knowledge as well for communication and collaboration
(Kozma, 2003). The development of these technologies has changed the
environment in which students develop skills for life, the basis of many
occupations and the way a number of social transactions take place. Knowing
about, understanding, and using, information technologies has become important
for life in modern society and its assessment has become a component of
monitoring student achievement in many educational systems.

Locale Literature

According to Fazli & Norazilah (2016), there is a lack of digital literacy in

online learning. Anthonysamy (2020) discovered that students lacked literacy in
a digital learning environment. It may be explained by the significant challenge
students face in gaining digital literacy, including power outages, inadequate
internet bandwidth. ICT facilities, and a lack of digital literacy programs and
standards (Ukwoma, Iwundu. & Iwundu, 2016). Similarly, Lorenzo (2016)
articulated that most public schools in the Philippines lack adequate ICT
infrastructure, and most teachers are not ICT literate, resulting in low student and
school performance.

The Internet is an empowering tool that promises to "school the Illiterate,

bring job training to the unskilled, open a universe of wondrous images and
knowledge to all students, and enrich the understanding of the...learner. It offers
the wide public an unparalleled access to a vast store of information and
knowledge. The Internet is considered a harbinger of intellectual and social
advancement for people, if not a harbinger of social change. The empowerment
Page | 9

and enfranchisement of individuals through knowledge and information could spur

social change that can break barriers that divide societies and nations. These
processes allow people, particularly the poor and disenfranchised, to have the
same access to education as everyone else. (Trinidad, n.d )
