ASSIGNMENT
GROUPE 5
The introduction to the Principles of Management is the course I'm willing to teach at the
university, as it covers the introductory to the fundamentals of management discipline in an
organizational context in order to get aware of several management principles as well as
practices. I'm also willing to take 30 freshmen divided into three groups of 10 freshmen each
so as to make the learning process effective, creative and engaging so as not to compromise
their learning opportunity, in addition to this, I would like to give my attention to each
freshman so as to ensure a fruitful outcome afterwards. In order to do so, I'll need a small
lecture hall with classroom basic furniture such as office desk chairs similar to the ones
ISCAE Corporate classes have.
In the matter of my course schedule, I recommend that my freshmen students take my
classes for 40 minutes twice a week in the first two weeks, and then move on to one hour
and a half sessions, two times a week for the remaining weeks of the semester
OBJECTIVES
The learning objectives I do have for this lesson are the following :
According to me, active learning is a fruitful instructional approach through which every
student participates in the learning process in an entertaining and useful way, therefore, I'm
planning to use my class time effectively as follows :
As mentioned earlier in the context section, the first 40 minute session will be devoted to an
icebreaker activity as it is useful and necessary for the beginning of a class period seeing
that the students don't know each other well, that being the case, students have to
demonstrate their very basic social skills through a brief introduction of themselves and
their academic background so as to end up their introduction with one word to define
Management, the last three students to introduce themselves have to give a full definition of
the concept of Management based on the words that have been previously mentioned by
their classmates. The session is supposed to end up with a presentation of the course
syllabus, policies and expected changes in the future of the course schedule.
Later on, the first module of the course covers the Introduction to Management Principles
with a general overview of the Purpose, Scope, and Roles of Management.
These points will be taught in the remaining 40 minute sessions as they consist of
introductory elements of the course, and in order to make the learning process more
entertaining and appealing, beyond my proper theoretical explanations, the following
activities are expected to take place :
Efficiency is one of the key elements of Management, that being the case, the mayo jar
activity highlights the importance of doing the most important tasks first. My students will
find themselves with different kinds of items. Therefore, depending on what object they put
in first determines how much of the other items they will be able to put in afterward.
This activity must be done as a group of 5 or 6 students maximum, each group is assigned to
write out their distractions, discuss solutions and work on an approach to overcome them.
Overall, it's a crucial activity to improve their mental focus and concentration skills in order
to get prepared as much as possible for the next module.
For the second module, it covers the main Functions of Management, Scientific
Management and the Evolution of Management Thought.
I decided to teach each section firstly through in a theoretical manner so as to delegate the
rest of the work for my students in an experiential approach and activities after every class
session as follows :
Evolution of Management Thought : This section will be treated while playing a game, 6
groups of 5 students are needed, each group must cover a certain period of the evolution
of management thoughts in different perspectives.
The first group will take care of the period during 1875 - 1900 (Classical
Perspective)
The second group will continue on with the period during 1900-1925 (Behavioral
Perspective)
The third group will treat The Quantitative Perspective during 1925-1950 (The
period during 1925-1950)
The fourth group will cover the period during 1950-1975 through The System
Perspective.
The fifth group will take care of the period during 1975-2000 (The Contingency
Perspective)
The sixth and last group will cover the period during 2000-onwards with The
Contemporary Perspective.
This will be done within two sessions, the first session, the opening group will start with
the classical perspective as stated above, the second will carry on with the Behavioral
Perspective and the third group will end the session with the Quantitative Perspective.
The rest of the third remaining perspectives will be treated the same way in a
chronological order.
Such an assessment will provide data for me as it will be much helpful with communicating
my students progress.
Concerning the second module, the assessment that I would take into consideration is the
Ipsative Assessment as it is useful to compare previous results of the summative midterm
assessment with a second try for any student that felt discouraged during the podcast test,
the main reason behind my choice for such an assessment is that it gets rid of the idea of
gratification and teaches instead students that learning is a continuous unending process.
It will take the form of a project-based learning activity through which the students will
work on elaborating an article summing up the Evolution of Management Thoughts and
present it to me during the last class session I have with them, I will have the right to ask any
student about any part of the project because everyone has to know about every part of the
project, I will be satisfied with my teaching method if every student succeeds to provide me
with the answers I'm expecting to get.
