II. TOTAL DAILY VOLUME OF WATER CONSUMPTION

Total daily volume of water consumption is based from the water demand for floor
washing/cleaning of fattening and breeding buildings, drinking and cooling of pigs as shown
below with an estimated amount of 9.53 m3/day. The source of water is from a well.

For floor washing/cleaning:

III. TOTAL DAILY VOLUME OF DISCHARGED RAW WASTEWATER TO THE WASTEWATER
TREATMENT FACILITY (WWTF)

Raw wastewaters from the animal production (piggery) operations enter the wastewater
treatment facility which is composed of bio-digester, dewaterer and lagoon. The computation
of the discharged of raw wastewater is based in the hydraulic principle that “the rate at which
mass exits a system is equal to the rate at which mass enters a system in any steady state
process”. In other words, “what comes in comes out”. Thus the amount of the raw wastewater
is the same that of the water consumption data stated above.

IV. NATURE & CHARACTERISTIC OF WASTEWATER

In the operations of the pig production, wastes consist of feces and urine, wasted feed, spilled
water from the drinking nipples and leaking pipes, and water used for cleaning the pens and
cooling the pigs. Because wastewaters are collected in open drains, they contain runoff water
plus soil and other particles carried by the runoff water. These contaminants will significantly
have impacts to bodies of water. The DENR Administrative Order (DAO) No. 2016-08 otherwise
known as Water Quality Guidelines and General Effluents Standards mandatory requires the
wastewater treatment be employed prior to the disposal of wastewater into the environment
either into bodies of water or on lands.

In compliance thereof, the RO-MA Piggery Farm constructed a Sewage Treatment Facility. The
wastewater or sewage that gets into the treatment facility undergoes bio-digestion and
dewatering processes. The effluents discharged in the constructed lagoon have been
characterized and compared with DENR Effluent Standards (DAO No. 2016-08) as shown below:

Pig Production DENR Effluents’ Remarks

Effluents (mg/L) Standards (mg/L)
BOD 16 50 Passed
TSS 85 100 Passed
DO 8.5 5 Passed

V. EXISTING WASTEWATER TREATMENT PROCESS AND ESTIMATED EFFICIENCY

The wastes generated from the pig production (piggery) operations come from the feces and
urine, wasted feeds, spilled water from the drinking nipples and leaking pipes, and water used
for cleaning the pens and cooling the pigs. Its quantities are computed as follows:

Total volume of wastewater generated per day (m3/day)

= Average water consumption x 90% (m3/day) + Average volume of pig manure (m3/day)

Therefore;

Average water consumption x 90% 9.53 m3 x 90% 8.6 m3/day

Average volume of pig manure (m3/day) 392 heads x 1 gal/pig x 1.5 m3/day
0.0038 m3/1 gal
Total volume of wastewater generated per day (m3/day) 10.1 m3/day

RO-MA Piggery’s wastewater treatment process is as follows:
 Pre-Treatment, which involves the breaking down of relatively large digestible particles
in wastewaters prior to entering the reactors;
 Anaerobic digestion, or the disintegration of biodegradable materials in the
wastewaters through biological processes facilitated by microbes which thrive in the
conditions promoted by the reactor; and
 Post-Treatment of biogas, effluent, and sludge resulting from anaerobic digestion.

The farm’s wastewater treatment facility is composed of drainage canals, a collection tank, an
underground concrete bio-digester, dewaterer, and clarifying lagoons.

The bio-digestion system reduces biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and total suspended
solids of pig farm wastewater by approximately 80%.

While the dewatering process reliably and efficiently concentrate the digested sludges from
bio-digesters into high solids filter cakes for easy and cost-effective disposal. Thickened cake
water content is usually 80%.

Thereby, this reduces the risks of water contamination.

The actual design and layout of the WWTF is shown below:
