Because the mentor wanted to know the methodology to use to teach that particular topic

2. Why didn’t the mentor help the student-teacher in the preparation of the lesson to that topic?
3
The mentor was not having any content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge of
which will help him/her to assist the mentee with guidance and clarification in preparing on that
topic .

3. What was the mentor’s intention for coming to the class early?

The mentors intentions for coming to the class early was to learn from his/her mentee's

relationship. (See page 124 of the STS Manual)
Reasons why mentees should learn from school community ;

1. It helps mentees to know more about the culture of the community you are doing practice
in. It's a wonderful thing done there mentees got the chance to observe some and their
culture is very nice and teaches us lesson in life .

2. It helps mentees to work together with parents , members in the community and

3. They also help in providing experience that developed both my social and learning skills .

Activity
Reflection on role modelling. (See page 131 of the STS Manual)

During my teaching practice i was a good role model to my pupils . My learners learn how to
dress from me and how i communicate to them using polite words during lesson delivery and
even when there is no lesson .

I also had a role model in my school in the person of our assistant headmaster even
though he wasn't my mentor but i always wanted to be like him during my lesson delivery
he teaches me how to use different methods and techniques as he does in his teaching .

7
Again he sometimes assist me in planning of my lesson . I imitated and observed some of
his techniques and methods which helped me in my teaching practice and am going to
used it in my profession .

Activity
Reflection on whether or not you have been a change to your pupils or learners. (See page 132
of the STS Manual)

I used to do regular check ups on my students uniform was done every Monday , Wednesday
and Friday morning . This made the students who did not like wearing socks and ironing of
uniform did . This also made truant students also changed and dressed well because an award
was given to best dressing student of the week .

Again , I together with my colleagues mentees see to the periodic sanitation programmes
to educate pupils on the need to keep the school surrounding clean and neat so every
Friday after first break we all pick our Cutlass and hoes and work in the school
compound .

Activity
Reflection on holding fast to ethical issues and principles (See page 132 of the STS Manual)
There were instances when a moral conflict arose in the school and needed immediate
attention . Among such ethical issues were related to ;
OPENNESS: The refusal of the open about matters affecting the school. My colleagues and
i felt that we have been deprived of accountability on the use of resources . Also one of
the key expectations of required of mentees was the need to honor code of respect and
integrity .
This intervention ,as a matter of fact were a huge benefit for me as such incidences
offered me the opportunity to sharpen my conflict resolution skill as well as effective and
strategic measures to deal with pertinent concerns of others .

Activity
Identify the professional development benefits derived from your engagement in macro
teaching (See page 133 of the STS Manual)
As a practicing teacher in the profession , it was necessary to abreast
myself with the new trends in the teaching profession and keep up with
modern or latest trends and different methods in teaching . I visited
several website in spare time to download and read articles concerning the
methodology to use in my lesson delivery of content as well as things
related to the new basic School curriculum , it's philosophies rational and
8
expectations of the teacher.
My mentor and lead mentor assisted me in planning of the lesson and
how to mark attendance and register , exercises . Whenever i
encountered difficulties on grading students,my mentor was there to
assist me in anyway and i learnt everything i came across .

The knowledge i learnt from the school -community relationship was

how to adapt the culture of the community in other to fit well in the
school -community and also the dos and don'ts .

SECTION THREE

Reflect on the methodologies and approaches you used during your macro teaching. (See page
138 of the STS Manual)

During my macro teaching i used role play method in delivery of my lesson . I realized that
students learn alot when they play and it's very difficult for them to forget.
Learners were guided to perform on how many science experiments

Learners were able to identify them very well . I was supposed to used my time efficiently but
the method did not help me because learners were much interested in the topic .

I often used role play and demonstration in my lesson and my learners always enjoy it during
teaching and learning .

Reflect on the assessment techniques and strategies you used during your macro teaching. (See
page 140 of the STS Manual)

During my teaching practice , i used alot of assessment techniques ,some of them include ,
quizzes, class exercises , assignment , oral questions and observation . I used all these
techniques and strategies to check for their assessment for learning the topics been treated ,
which gave me feedback to do my work as i was doing it or change my ways of teaching .
Assessment was done to check the studied progress of my learners in the classroom .

Reflect on management of feedback and feedforward. (See page 151 of the STS Manual).

Students in KO Methodist do not like going to school because most of the

9
students parents are market women and they often take their children to the
market

During my teaching practice , i realize that most of the learner's do not like
speaking English at all so they were found making errors when expressing
themselves and i thought it was normal in the basic school even we in the
college do not like speaking English .

In my teaching practice when learners make mistakes in answering questions

or want to ask questions in class they found it difficult in expressing
themselves so i don't repeat the mistakes i rather help them to speak the
right thing and correct their pronunciations for them . I also encourage them
not to make fun of others when they speak but rather encourage them to do it
well because practice makes a man perfect .

I sometimes draw learners attention to spelling errors by underlying the

wrong spelling in their books and write the right things for them on on the
board next time to help students identify the particular errors.

Again , i also find out in my class that some learners have difficulties in
reading and so i help them to read by going over for each of them to be able
to get it and read it and sometimes give them time to read the text they
found difficult to do .

10
SECTION FOUR
Use the guiding questions (statements below) to describe your experiences during Macro
Teaching. (See page 165 of the STS Manual)

List the curriculum materials used in your lesson plan preparation.

1. Text book
2. Teaching and learning materials
3. Syllabus
4. Time table

What were the sources and nature of the materials used?

Most of the materials was being taken from the school office and ones that were not available
were looked for from the community of practice and sometimes learners bring some from their
homes and i also bring some of the resources i will be using .
Some of the resources were , card boards, charts, videoso videos etc were used in the lesson
delivery .

How did the materials help you in the preparation of the scheme of learning?

The materials were very helpful and it help me to achieve my learning objectives . Due to
that i was able to express myself very well and my learner's also understand the topics very
well .

How did the materials help you in the preparation of the lesson plan?

The teaching and learning materials like the Charts helped me to show some of the relevant
things to my learners and makes teaching and learning more effective and helps to prevent the
class from been boring . Learners were happy and take full participation in the topic and saw
things real .

11
SECTION FIVE

Reflection on professional skills (See page 166 of the STS Manual)

Some of the professional skills needed are leadership skills, time management skills ,
communication skills , questioning skills , punctuality etc .

Professional skills are the combination of both hard and soft skills which we have to
demonstrate as teachers and most of the above mention skills were learnt from our mentors
lead mentors and other staff members which will help me as a mentee in my teaching practice
and my profession .

Reflect on the views, perceptions and attitudes to teaching. (See page 166 of the STS
Manual)

As a professional teacher , my attitude and perception should have to be environmental

friendly . You have to consider all learners from different learning background , their
interest and special needs . You also have to know all this views in mind before you will go
to the class as a teacher .

A teacher has a good perception about learners and know that the learners learn from what
they know and what they do not know . This means that to be able to fit into the teaching
profession , i must be ready to face the demands and provisions of the teaching standard .
Since the NTC will use the teachers standard in assessing cases of my misconduct by any
member of the teaching profession , one must portray good attitudes and character towards
the teaching profession .

Reflection on the Values in teaching. (See page 167 of the STS Manual)

Values in teaching consist of some basic important things in life , they are the dignity ,
respect , fairness , truthfulness , honesty etc which a teacher has to exercise to improve
teaching and learning in his /her class .

If a learner sees that you are fair and show respect towards them , they also respect you as an
individual and listens to whatever you tell them in class and it promote equality , non-
discrimination if it doesn't matter who the learner is or the background of the learner . This
values helped to promote some ethical issues in the teaching profession .

Reflection on inclusivity. (See page 167 of the STS Manual)

Inclusive education is the process whereby the teacher engage all learners in the classroom or
in school as a whole with or without disabilities . It is about restructuring the policies , culture
and practices in school so that they respond to the diversity of students in their locality .
Inclusivity embrace all disabilities , race , gender etc in the classroom to feel safe and have a
sense of belonging . Inclusivity is very important in classroom and some of the benefits are ,
it bring about respect for others , good friendship skills , good communication and positive
12
self image .

Reflection on gender. (See page 167 of STS Manual)

Gender is a social construction . During my teaching practice , i gave boys and girls equal
opportunities. Roles given to boys were also giving to girls .

I make sure there is no two girls sitting on the same desk same as the boys . Group leaders
were given to both girls and boys not one side and when grouping them into groups they
are evenly divided .

Teaching philosophy based on your experience and reflections from all your supported
teaching in schools. (See page 168 of the STS Manual)

Teaching philosophy is a personal statement that introduce you as a teacher .

Expressing your beliefs and values in teaching is what the philosophy is all about . To
begin with , the all my students deserve my effort as a teacher . They all will be treated
equally and they will be treated fairly in my class without any fear , discrimination and
favoritism .

Activity
Reflect on the accrued benefits in relation to community of practice. (See page 134 of the
STS Manual)

During my teaching practice programme i related well with the community . Although i
like to be indoors after school but i used to communicate with some of the people in the
community especially my school of practice the parents and some of the relatives of the
learner's and it helped me to know some of the background of the learner's and help to know
how to treat them .
