1 SCOPE OF THE DOCUMENT
The purpose of these specifications is to define the technical requirements applicable for the
bidding, fabrication, supply, erection, start-up and commissioning for Smoke Detection
System, involved in the QCA2 Dataluna Project.
2 REFERENCE DOCUMENTS
The specifications and standards listed below form a part of this specification. The system
shall fully comply with the latest issue of these standards, if applicable.

UL 1971 Visual Notification Appliances
3 SCOPE
The fire alarm system shall comply with requirements of NFPA Standard 72 for Protected
Premises Signaling Systems except as modified and supplemented by this specification. The
system shall be electrically supervised and monitor the integrity of all conductors.
The FACP and peripheral devices shall be manufactured 100% by a single U.S. manufacturer
(or division thereof).
The system and its components shall be Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. listed under the
appropriate UL testing standard as listed herein for fire alarm applications and the
installation shall be in compliance with the UL listing.
The detection system shall have the capacity of supervise outer functions, including pressure
sensors, valve position sensors, flow sensors and particularly on the pump room the system
shall supervise the following:
• Electric pump motor start.
• Diesel pump start.
• Jockey pump start.
• Manual mode selector activation. .
• Blocked mode selector activation.
• Securiy failures of the system.
• #1 Battery failure.
• #2 Battery failure.
The system shall have access codes and shall allow to discriminate between four scenarios
shown below:
• Signal Supervision
Group 1, Water movement: flow switch activation, pump start.

Group 2, Pump failure during fire extinction: any of the signals coming from the
pump room.
The two groups of events shall be printed in red on the Printer (PRN).
• Smoke Detection
Group 3, Smoke detection activation, activation of manual sensors.
Group 4, Monitoring failure: any failure from the monitoring sensors.
The two groups of events shall be printed in black on the Printer (PRN).
• Access Codes
Programming Codes: Program access.
Codes of the administration and safety personnel: restricted user access, allows
accept and cancel alarms.
The use of any code shall generate the recording of the following: used code, day,
hour and silenced alarm.
Provide Air Sampling Detection (ASD) system(s) as indicated in this Specification and on the
Drawings.
Reference the Fire Alarm drawings for connectivity, interaction and function between other
systems and devices for the ASSD system.
All fees and permits specifically required for the Air Sampling Detection system shall be
applied for and paid for by Air Sampling Detection system Contractor.

The Contractor shall be responsible for obtaining and meeting the requirements as imposed
by the AHJ. Any costs as a result of these requirements shall be the Air Sampling Detection
system Contractor(s) responsibility.
3.2 FACP
A new intelligent reporting, microprocessor controlled fire detection system shall be installed
in accordance to the project specifications and drawings. The power supply is rated for 230V,
50hz.

• The smoke detection system shall be implemented with brand new equipment and
certified by UL/FM and shall be constructed following completely the NFPA code
(NFPA 70 and NFPA 72).
• Supply and installation of all wiring and cabling for the connection of all the smoke
detection equipment. (Detectors, pulsators, horn, stroboscopic lights, monitoring
modules, etc.) All cables shall be “class A”.
• Supply and installation of all wiring and cabling for the power supply of all the fire
control and alarm panels and in general for all equipment with power supply
requirements.
• The contractor shall be aware of the existence of a pump room and shall wire and
test all the signal from this room to the corresponding FACP.
• The contractor shall perform all the tests and start-up of the system and training for
the personnel designated by the owner.
• The contractor shall follow up the performance of the system for two months after
the provisional reception of the Works, during this follow up, the contractor shall
revise that the system will not activate itself neither by effect of the industrial
complex working nor the ambient conditions. If necessary, the contractor shall
modify the technology used in order for this not to happen.
• The smoke and alarm detection system shall be received by the owner after one
moth of continuous operation without failure and having the owner in his possess all
the documentation required, without the assistance of the contractor, to change the
system programming, change the circuit tags and solve common failures.
• All the local paperwork, presentation to the local authorities shall be responsibility of
the contractor.
• The transport, movement and storage of materials inside the construction site shall
be the contractor responsibility, who shall supervise these tasks assuming the
responsibility of the good handling of all the equipment and materials.
• Supply and installation of all fiber optics for the interconnection of all the fire control
and alarm panels.
3.3 Phasing
The DC and FSA are to be constructed in three phases with two zones per phase, see
architectural plans for phase and zone areas and fire alarm plans for description of what is
included in each phase and zone. At a minimum, during phase 1 zone 1 and phase 2 zone 1,
all floors are to be provided with complete fire alarm notification layout and associated

4 APPROVALS
The system shall have proper listing and/or approval from the following nationally
recognized agencies:
The fire alarm control panel shall meet UL Standard 864 Ninth Edition (Control Units) and UL
Standard 1076 (Proprietary Burglar Alarm Systems).
The interconnection between the relay modules and electric actuators must be executed by
the fire detection contractor and coordinated with the corresponding specialties.
6 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
System shall consist of an Air Sampling Smoke Detection (ASSD) assembly housing an
integral aspiration fan, flow sensor(s), filter, laser-based detection chamber, and control,
output and supervision circuitry.

7 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
Alarm, trouble and supervisory signals from all intelligent reporting devices shall be encoded

on NFPA Style 4 (Class A) Signaling Line Circuits (SLC).
Initiation Device Circuits (IDC) shall be wired Class A (NFPA Style D) as part of an
addressable device connected by the SLC Circuit.
Notification Appliance Circuits (NAC) shall be wired Class A (NFPA Style Z) as part of an
addressable device connected by the SLC Circuit.
On Style 6 or 7 (Class A) configurations a single ground fault or open circuit on the system
Signaling Line Circuit shall not cause system malfunction, loss of operating power or the
ability to report an alarm.
Alarm signals arriving at the FACP shall not be lost following a primary power failure (or
outage) until the alarm signal is processed and recorded.
System shall be complete in all ways. It shall include all engineering, and electrical
installation, all detection and control equipment, auxiliary devices and controls, alarm
interface, functional checkout and testing, training and all other operations necessary for a
functional system.
System design, installation, commissioning and testing shall be in accordance with this
Specification, the Manufacturer’s guidelines and per all applicable codes and requirements of
the local Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).
All equipment and associated components shall be new, standard products or the
Manufacturer’s latest design and suitable to perform the functions intended.
Refer to the Specification 281311 for requirements of Fire Alarm cabling for additional
requirements or use.
Although such work is not specifically indicated, furnish and install all supplementary or
miscellaneous items, appurtenances, switches and devices necessary for a sound, secure

and complete installation in full compliance with all applicable codes and requirements of the
local Authorities Having Jurisdiction.
For detection of smoke concentration within each Server Floor (ASSD System):
• Provide appropriate number of ASSD apparatuses to efficiently and adequately cover
designated area(s).
• For preaction cross zoning and source location purposes ASSD apparatuses shall be
addressable with each pipe being a zone or sector. For hot aisles within each Server
Floor:
o Air sampling pipe distribution networks shall be constructed using rigid pipe
mounted at top center of each hot aisle containment structure at a point just
before mechanical forced air leaves the containment and enters the plenum as
indicated in this Specification and on the Drawings. Where structural
obstructions prevent centering of the pipe distribution network, piping shall be
placed directly adjacent to either side of the obstruction without requiring pipe
bends to avoid obstructions.
o Sampling pipe distribution networks shall be supported every 5 ft (1.5 m) on
center.
o Sampling points shall be drilled directly into the air sampling pipe distribution
network and be oriented 30-45° downward towards the incoming airflow.
o Sampling point spacing shall be based upon sampling point distribution of
minimum one (1) sampling point per 6 ft (1.8 m) of linear distance.
o Each containment aisle shall be served by an individual ASSD pipe zone or
sector.
• For cold aisles within each Server Floor (ASSD System):
o Air sampling pipe distribution networks shall be constructed using remote
sampling points mounted to the underside of the drop ceiling.
o Remote sampling points serving cold aisles running parallel to adjacent hot
aisles shall interface with air sampling pipe distribution networks serving hot
aisles via use of flexible “capillary” tubing as indicated on the Drawings.
o Remote sampling points shall alternate between adjacent ASSD pipe zones or
sectors as indicated on the Drawings.
o Maximum length of “capillary” tubing shall not exceed 26 ft (8 m).
o Sampling points shall be oriented downward and shall be within 1 to 4 inches
(25 to 101mm) below the underside of the drop ceiling.

o Remote sampling point spacing for cold aisle detection shall not exceed 200 sq
ft (18.5 sq m) per sampling point, exception being where obstructions such as
air supply diffusers would otherwise prevent this spacing objective from being
met, in which case placement shall be just outside perimeter of obstruction.
o Remote sampling points shall be a minimum of 3 ft (1 m) away from air
supply diffusers.
o Remote sampling points shall be installed in an area on the ceiling that is free
from obstructions for a minimum of 18 inches (457 mm) on all sides.
o Placement of remote sampling points nearest to walls shall be greater than 12
inches (304mm) and not exceed 10 ft (3 m).
• For open areas below structural ceiling within each Server Floor (ie. areas without
drop ceiling):
o Air sampling pipe distribution networks shall be constructed using rigid pipe
mounted to the underside of the structural ceiling.
o For structural ceilings that have beams, girders, solid joist or waffle-like
construction, etc., and are defined by local codes and standards as a beam
pocket, air sampling pipe distribution networks shall mount to the underside of
structural beams with stanchions having sampling point extending up into
each beam pocket at locations where sampling points are required. Sampling
points shall be placed center of each beam pocket. Where multiple sampling
points are required to cover a single beam pocket sampling points shall be
evenly spaced within the pocket.
o Sampling points shall be drilled directly into the air sampling pipe distribution
network, be oriented downward and be within 1 to 4 inches (25 to 101 mm)
below the underside of the structural ceiling.
o Maximum coverage per sampling point shall not exceed 200 sq ft (18 sq m).
o Sampling points shall be installed in an area on the ceiling that is free from
obstructions for a minimum of 18 inches (457 mm) on all sides.
o Placement of sampling points nearest to walls shall be greater than 12 inches
(304 mm) and not exceed 10 ft (3 m).
o Sampling points shall be a minimum of 3ft (1m) away from air supply
diffusers.
• Maximum transport time from furthest sampling point on each pipe run shall not
exceed 60 seconds.

• For open areas within CNR/CCNR (ASSD System):
o Air sampling pipe distribution networks shall be constructed using rigid pipe
mounted to the underside of the structural ceiling.
o For structural ceilings that have beams, girders, solid joist or waffle-like
construction, etc., and are defined by local codes and standards as a beam
pocket, air sampling pipe distribution networks shall mount to the underside of
structural beams with stanchions having sampling point extending up into
each beam pocket at locations where sampling points are required. Sampling
points shall be placed center of each beam pocket. Where multiple sampling
points are required to cover a single beam pocket sampling points shall be
evenly spaced within the pocket.
o Sampling points shall be drilled directly into the air sampling pipe distribution

For detection of smoke concentration within battery/inverter and electrical rooms serving
each CNR/CCNR space (ASSD System):
• Provide appropriate number of ASSD apparatuses to efficiently and adequately cover
designated area(s).
• For preaction cross zoning and source location purposes ASSD apparatuses shall be
addressable with each pipe being a zone or sector.
• Where electrical rooms are directly adjacent to battery/inverter rooms a single
addressable ASSD apparatus shall provide combined coverage of both spaces.
Application shall be in accordance with the Manufacturer’s published combined
coverage sampling guidelines and in accordance with this Specification and the
Drawings.
• Air sampling pipe distribution networks shall be constructed using rigid pipe mounted
to the underside of the structural ceiling.
• For structural ceilings that have beams, girders, solid joist or waffle-like construction,
etc., and are defined by local codes and standards as a beam pocket, air sampling
pipe distribution networks shall mount to the underside of structural beams with
stanchions having sampling point extending up into each beam pocket at locations
where sampling points are required. Sampling points shall be placed center of each
beam pocket. Where multiple sampling points are required to cover a single beam
pocket sampling points shall be evenly spaced within the pocket.
• Sampling points shall be drilled directly into the air sampling pipe distribution
network, be oriented downward and be within 1 to 4 inches (25 to 101mm) below the
underside of the structural ceiling.
• Maximum coverage per sampling point shall not exceed 200 sq ft (18 sq m).

For detection of smoke concentration within Central Utility Building (CUB) (ASSD System)

Each ASSD system shall be provided with an adhesive label affixed to its housing stating the
following: “Air Sampling SMOKE Detection (ASSD), intended for Smoke Detection”. The
adhesive label shall have a white background with red (Pantone #032 or equivalent) letters
using all caps Arial bold font size minimum 14. Refer to drawings for ASSD locations.
ASSD zones shall coincide with preaction sprinkler zones as indicated on the Drawings.
Sampling points from ASSD zones shall not crossover into a neighboring preaction sprinkler
zone.
Manufacturer’s specific software modeling tool which uses air sampling pipe distribution
network parameters shall be used to predict performance of pipe network design(s). Each of
the following performance requirements shall be met:
• Maximum sensitivity at each sample point for ASSD shall not exceed 1% obs/ft (3%
obs/m).
• Transport times shall not exceed times specified herein for each coverage area
measured from the furthest sampling point (excluding Benchmark Test Point) on each
pipe run back to the ASSD apparatus. A minimum 5% buffer shall be maintained to
account for field variations that may occur but in no case shall exceed the specified
transport time objective.
• For air sampling pipe distribution networks fitted with ASGD apparatuses balance
between sampling points shall be a minimum of 90%.
Where local codes and standards dictate placement and spacing of sampling points that is
more stringent than those specified herein, local codes and standards shall prevail.
All sampling points shall be marked with the Manufacturer’s standard identification labels as
specified herein.
ASSD systems shall be installed in an accessible location and at an accessible height not to
exceed 6 ft (1.82 m) as indicated in this Specification and on the Drawings.
A Benchmark Test Point shall be provided at the furthest end of each pipe run, opposite end
of the ASSD apparatus. Provisions shall be made so that this test point can be located

maximum 6 ft (1.82 m) above finished floor. The test point shall be constructed using a
normally closed industrial quick connect fitting provided by manufacturer having an orifice of
nominal 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) when open to facilitate benchmark performance verification as
indicated in this Specification and on the Drawings. This remote test point is intended to
benchmark system performance at time of initial commissioning and during routine test and
inspection. The test point shall be labeled documenting benchmark system performance at
time of commissioning using Manufacturer supplied labels intended for this purpose.
Benchmark labels shall be placed just above test points and be positioned so that they are
visible without obstruction.
A shut-off valve shall be provided at an accessible level not to exceed 6 ft (1.82 m) prior to
inlet of ASSD apparatus to facilitate routine calibration as indicated in this Specification and
on the Drawings. Provide clearance to provide routine maintenance and clearance without
removal of any other equipment.
A “clean out” tee shall be provided at an accessible level not to exceed 6 ft (1.82 m) prior to
the inlet of the shut-off valve to facilitate routine cleaning of the pipe network as indicated in
this Specification and on the Drawings. Provide clearance to provide routine maintenance
and clearance without removal of any other equipment.
8 SUBMITTALS
Product Data:
• Provide manufacturer's product data sheets for equipment provided under this
Section. This shall include data sheets on all components, power requirements,
electrical characteristics, connection requirements, and compatibility showing that
components are compatible with each other, and system operational theories as they

relate to each system. Manufacturer’s product data sheets shall be clearly marked
(highlighted) to indicate the actual product/device and model of the equipment
provided.
• Submit Manufacturer’s technical product data as a minimum, but not limited to, for
the following:
o Air Sampling Smoke Detector(s).
o Display unit(s).
o Programming device(s).
o Sampling pipe.
o Input/output and monitoring devices.
o Devices such as relays if needed, etc.
o Wiring diagrams.
o Equipment ratings.
o Description of system operation for each product and that the system meets
or exceeds specified requirements.
Shop Drawings:
• Shop Drawings shall provide at a minimum, all information indicated by sections 7.2,
7.3.4, 7.3.5, and 7.4 of NFPA 72. Shop Drawings submitted to Engineer of Record for
approval shall include point-to-point wiring diagrams for each component of the
systems specified in this Section. Point-to-point wiring diagrams shall detail each
proposed device location and all proposed wire runs between the device, all other
connected equipment, and all proposed network wiring runs.
• Shop Drawings shall be prepared by persons with the following qualifications:
o Trained and certified by Manufacturer in Air Sampling Detection system
design.
o NICET certified fire alarm technician, Level III minimum or equivalent.
o Where required, licensed or certified by the authorities having jurisdiction.
• Information shall be submitted on 1/8" = 1'-0" scale building floor plans.
Reproduction of contract drawing will not be acceptable. The following information
shall be included in the shop drawings:
o Floor or level indication.
o Point of compass (indication of North).
o Graphic Scale.
o All walls and doors.

9 QUALITY ASSURANCE
It is imperative that the Manufacturer be included in the early stages of project work to
ensure all designs are in compliance with regulatory code, and Manufacturer’s criteria.
• Architect and/or Engineer Consultant: Prior to the release of bid packages to the
contractors, the ASD system manufacturer shall review all designs for new ASD
systems;
o A set of prints (electronic) for both electrical and mechanical shall be sent to
Manufacturer complete with all reference to ASD systems along with a copy of
the ASD project specifications. Upon receipt of this complete package,
Manufacturer will review and comment within 5-7 working days.
• Installing Contractor: Prior to submittal, ordering of equipment or commencement of
any installation work, the ASD system Manufacturer shall review all designs for new
ASD systems;
o A set of prints (AutoCAD) shall be sent to manufacturer complete with all ASD
piping layouts, detector placement, ASPIRE2 calculations, and a copy of ASD
project specifications. Upon receipt of this complete package, manufacturer
will review and comment within 5-7 working days.

• Prior to commencement of any installation work the installing contractor shall review
and complete Manufacturer’s pre-installation checklist to ensure compliance with
specification and manufacturer guidelines. Checklist shall be furnished to
Manufacturer for review and approval.
• At a mid-installation date as agreed upon with the General Contractor, the
Manufacturer shall visit the site to observe installation practices to ensure compliance
with specification and Manufacturer’s guidelines. The Manufacturer shall provide a
field observation report detailing any deviations from specification and Manufacturer’s
guidelines to the General Contractor with copy to installing contractor.
• Before installation, all equipment and piping shall be clean and free of debris or dust.
During installation and before final testing all pipes shall be cleaned and free of debris
or dust.
Manufacturer's Qualifications:
• Firms regularly engaged in manufacture of Air Sampling Smoke Detection systems of
types, sizes, and electrical characteristics required, and whose products have been in
satisfactory use in similar service for not less than fifteen years.
• The name of the manufacturer, part numbers and serial numbers shall appear on all
major components.
Contractor Qualifications:
• ASSD Systems:
o All contractors involved with the design and installation of ASSD systems shall
be very experienced with the systems that they are designing / installing. A

minimum of 5 years’ experience in the installation of ASSD systems and a
NICET level III fire alarm technician or equivalent on staff to supervise the
design and installation is required.
o System testing technicians or others conducting system programming,
certification, power up, and system commissioning, shall be an accredited
NICET Level II (or greater) or equivalent fire alarm technician to perform such
work.
o The installing contractor shall be listed by the ASSD system Manufacturer as
being trained and certified to model, design, install, program, test and
maintain the ASSD system and shall be able to produce a certificate stating
such upon request.
o The installing contractor shall maintain appropriate licensing and certifications
from the jurisdiction in which the work occurs.
Materials and installation shall be in accordance with the latest revisions of the following
codes, standards and specifications, except where more stringent requirements have been
specified herein:
• Factory Mutual Global (FMG) Labeling and Listing Requirements
• NCh 4 Electricidad Instalaciones de Consumo en Baja Tensión
• National Fire Protection Association
o 70 National Electrical Code, 2011 edition
o 72 National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code, 2013 edition
• Standards listed, as well as all other applicable codes and standards shall be used as
“minimum” design standards. Also, to be considered are the requirements of the
“Authority Having Jurisdiction” and good engineering practices.
Contractor shall provide necessary means to properly stage and store all materials and
equipment until time of use or installation on the Project. Contractor shall be solely

responsible for materials and equipment stored on the Site; type and extent of security
provided to be at Contractor’s discretion. Coordinate all requirements with Owner.
Contractor shall be responsible for proper handling, rigging, and installing of all materials
and equipment for the Project. Contractor is responsible for cleaning the materials at all
stages of construction to ensure that piping and sensing equipment is clean and free of dust
or debris.
Owner reserves the right to reject any materials or equipment that is not properly stored in
accordance with these specifications or the Manufacturers’ requirements.
11 MANUFACTERS
Approved Manufacturers, no substitutions: Subject to compliance with requirements,
provide products by Xtralis Inc. Substitution requests will not be considered.
All devices and equipment shall be listed by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory.
All equipment and components shall be installed in strict compliance with manufacturers'
recommendations. Consult the manufacturer's installation manuals for all wiring diagrams,
schematics, physical equipment sizes, etc., before beginning system installation.
All equipment shall be attached to walls and ceiling/floor assemblies and shall be held firmly
in place (e.g., detectors shall not be supported solely by suspended ceilings). Fasteners and
supports shall be adequate to support the required load.

The only brand that shall be used on the equipment shall be Edwards. This item shall be
1 programmed on an opened way and the client shall direct Access to the fire alarm control
panel programming.
The brands specified on this document stablish the minimum level of quality required for the
equipment, materials and accessories for this project.
When alternatives are offered, the brand and material type shall be clearly state and in any
case the quality shall be less than what was requested or not comply with the rules and
regulations mentioned on this specification.
There are no restrictions to the use of new technologies, but their use and the economies or
savings coming from these technologies must be approved with the owner and/or
engineering consultant.
It shall be responsibility of the contractor to modify the Project according to the technology
offered.
12.1 Conduit
Conduit shall be in accordance with The National Electrical Code (NEC), local and state
requirements.
Where required, all wiring shall be installed in conduit or raceway. Conduit fill shall not
exceed 40 percent of interior cross-sectional area where three or more cables are contained
within a single conduit.
Cable must be separated from any open conductors of power, or Class 1 circuits, and shall
not be placed in any conduit, junction box or raceway containing these conductors, per NEC
Article 760-55.
Wiring for 24-volt DC control, alarm notification, emergency communication and similar
power-limited auxiliary functions may be run in the same conduit as initiating and signaling
line circuits. All circuits shall be provided with transient suppression devices and the system
shall be designed to permit simultaneous operation of all circuits without interference or loss
of signals.

Conduit shall not enter the fire alarm control panel, or any other remotely mounted control
panel equipment or backboxes, except where conduit entry is specified by the FACP
manufacturer.
Conduit shall be 3/4-inch (19.1 mm) minimum, in hot dip galvanized steel.
12.2 Wiring
All fire alarm system wiring shall be sized for the application and shall be as recommended
in writing by manufacturer and listed here below. All power wiring shall conform to NFPA 72
and Division 26 requirements.
• FACP to FACP Wiring:
o All wiring between FACP(s) (including graphical command workstation) shall
be class X style per NFPA 72.
o Provide a dedicated Emergency Communications Ethernet TCP/IP Network.
The IP Network shall be 9/125μ Single Mode fiber optic cable.
o The TCP/IP network shall contain multiple nodes consisting of the graphical
command workstation, Fire Alarm Control Panel (ACU/FACP), and Local
Operations Consoles (LOC).
o Control equipment communications paths shall be monitored for integrity.
Opens.
Wire-to-wire fault.
Ground fault.
Adverse conditions.
o Non-dedicated IP networks with or without firewalls shall utilize 128 bit
encryption.
o Any attempt to compromise the communication link shall post a trouble
condition.
o Fiber Optic Wiring Products:
Fire optic cable shall be as manufactured by Tyco Electronics
Corporate, Belden, CommScope or Corning Incorporated, and shall
constitute the type and quality of equipment to be provided.
Single-mode, 12-strand minimum cable; with performance
characteristics to satisfy fire alarm system manufacturer requirements
for digital network and voice applications.

Fiber Optic Jumper Cords:
• All fiber optic jumper cords shall be factory-made. Field-
constructed fiber optic jumper cords are not acceptable.
• Fiber optic cable shall match type and be compatible with fire
alarm control unit connections and the patch panel connections.
Fiber Optic Cable Hardware:
• Meet the Optical Fiber Connector Intermateability Standards
(FOCIS) specifications of TIA-604-2-B, TIA-604-3-B, and
TIA/EIA-604-12. Comply with TIA/EIA-568-B.3.
• Connecting hardware shall match type and be compatible with
fire alarm control unit connections and the patch panel
connections.
• Insertion loss not more than .75 dB.
• Notification Appliance Circuits:
o All notification circuits shall be supervised and power limited. Non-power
limited circuits are not acceptable. All notification appliance circuits shall be
Class A.
• Initiating Device Circuits:
o Conventional (2-wire) initiating device circuits monitoring manual fire alarm
stations, smoke and heat detectors, waterflow switches, valve supervisory
switches, fire pump functions, and air pressure supervisory switches shall be
Class A.
o Initiating device circuits shall be configurable for latched or non-latched
operation and configurable to initiate alarm, supervisory or monitor events.
o End-of-line resistors for conventional initiating device circuits shall be covered
with insulated tubing, terminated with ring lugs and display a UL label.
Wiring Requirements:

o Multiconductor Armored Cable: NFPA 70, Type MC, copper conductors, Type
TFN/THHN conductor insulation, copper drain wire, copper armor with red
identifier stripe, NTRL listed for fire alarm and cable tray installation, and
plenum rated.
• Signaling Line Circuits: Twisted, shielded pair, size as recommended by system
manufacturer, but no less than 1,5 mm2 (No. 16 AWG).
Initiating circuits shall be arranged to serve like categories (manual, smoke, waterflow).
Mixed category circuitry shall not be permitted except on signaling line circuits connected to
intelligent reporting devices.
The fire alarm control panel shall be connected to a separate dedicated branch circuit,
maximum 20 amperes. This circuit shall be labeled at the main power distribution panel as
FIRE ALARM. Fire alarm control panel primary power wiring shall be 12 AWG. The control
panel cabinet shall be grounded securely to either a cold water pipe or grounding rod.
Reentrant-type speakers located in mechanical rooms or high noise areas shall be double re-
entrant, surface-mounted type with multi-tapped transformer. Speakers tapped at 1.8 watts
shall provide a minimum output of 93 dB at 10 feet. Provide brackets and other accessories
required for mounting of horn-type speakers. Horn-type speaker design shall be in

Visual Notification Appliances shall provide a flash rate of 1 flash per second and shall
provide a minimum output intensity as indicated on Drawings. Strobe intensity shall meet
UL 1971, NFPA 72 and ANSI Standards when mounted in accordance with ADA Guidelines.
Visual notification appliances shall be of synchronized type and shall either be mounted as a
stand-alone unit or shall be mounted in combination with a speaker as indicated. Visual
notification appliances that are ceiling mounted shall be listed for installed configuration.
Visual notification appliance shall have a clear lens and housing color shall be white with red
lettering marked with “ALERT”.
Combination Fire Alarm Audible and Visual Notification Appliances: Combination mounted
fire alarm audible and visual notification appliances shall be provided, where indicated. Fire
alarm horns shall be of the standard design, synchronized type and shall have a minimum
output of 90 dB at 10 feet. The visual notification appliance shall be of the synchronized
type, shall provide a flash rate of 1 flash per second and shall provide a minimum intensity
as indicated on Drawings. The strobe intensity shall meet UL 1971, NFPA 72 and ANSI
Standards when mounted in accordance with ADA Guidelines. Visual notification appliances
that are ceiling mounted shall be listed for the installed configuration. Provide backboxes for
all combination, audible and visual notification appliances. Backboxes shall be designed for
surface or flush mounting as required. If fire alarm system audible or visual notification
appliances are surface mounted, backbox color shall match indicator color. Exterior Visual
and audible notification appliance shall have a clear lens and housing color shall be white
with red lettering marked with “ALERT”.
Provide backboxes for speakers and visual indicators. Backboxes shall be designed for
surface or flush mounting as required. If speakers and/or visual indicators are surface
mounted, backbox color shall match speaker and visual indicator color.

Each audio power amplifier shall have integral audio signal de-multiplexers, allowing the
amplifier eight simultaneous digitized audio channels as directed by system programming.
System amplifiers shall be sized such that sufficient power is available to power all
connected speakers, as currently tapped, plus 20 percent spare capacity.
Audio amplifiers shall be power limited and protected from short circuits conditions on the
audio circuit wiring. Each amplifier output shall provide a selectable 25/70 Vrms output,
suitable for connection to emergency speakers.
Amplifiers shall also include a 24 VDC notification appliance circuit rated at 24Vdc @ 3.5A for
connection of visible (strobe) appliances. This circuit shall be fully programmable.
Provide as minimum, one twenty (20) watt audio amplifier per paging zone. Initial amplifier
loading shall not exceed 80% in order to allow for future system expansion. Calculations
shall assume each speaker is connected at a minimum of one (1) watt.
To enhance system survivability in the event of a total loss of audio data communications,
all amplifiers shall default to the local “EVAC” tone generator channel. If the local panel has
an alarm condition, then all amplifiers will sound the EVAC message on their speaker
circuits. In the event of a loss of the fully digitized, multiplexed audio riser data, the audio
amplifiers shall automatically default to an internally generated alarm tone which shall sound
a 3-3-3 temporal pattern.
Each EST3 FACP with audio amplifiers shall be equipped with one backup amplifier that is
sized to match the largest amplifier in that same EST3 FACP. This backup amplifier shall be
configured to automatically take over the audio load of a failed amplifier and operate on the
channel the failed amplifer was commanded to.

12.7 Remote booster power supplies
Install Remote NAC Power Supplies (boosters) at the locations shown on the drawings, as
required, to minimize NAC voltage drops. Remote NAC power supplies shall be treated as
peripheral NAC devices and shall not be considered fire alarm control units.
The NAC power supplies shall be fully enclosed in a surface mounted steel enclosure with
hinged door and cylinder lock, and finished in red enamel. Door keys shall be the identical to
FACP enclosure keys. The enclosure shall have factory installed mounting brackets for
additional UL listed fire alarm equipment within its cabinet. Enclosures shall be sized to allow
ample space for interconnection of all components and field wiring, and up to 10AH
batteries. The enclosure shall have provisions for an optional tamper switch. All FACP
addressable control modules required to initiate the required NAC power supply output
functions shall be installed within the NAC power supply enclosure.
Remote NAC power supply input circuits shall be configurable as Class B supervised inputs or
for connection to any 6 to 45 VDC initiation source.
Remote booster power supplies shall provide four (4) synchronized Class B supervised or
two (2) Class A, power limited, 24VDC filtered and regulated Notification Appliance Circuits
(NACs). Each NAC output shall be configurable as a continuous 24Vdc auxiliary power output
circuit. The booster power supply shall be capable of a total output of 10 amps.
The power supply NACs shall be configurable to operate independently at any one of the
following rates: continuous synchronized, or 3-3-3 temporal. It shall be possible to
configure the NACs to follow the main FACP NAC or activate from intelligent addressable
synchronized modules. All visible NACs within the facility shall be synchronized.
Upon failure of primary AC power, the remote power supply shall automatically switch over
to secondary battery power without losing any system functions. Each power extender shall
be equipped with 24 hour battery backup. 24 hour battery backup shall be defined as
amount and size of batteries required to power entire system in standby mode for a 24-hour
period and, after 24-hour standby period has expired, be capable of operating audible and
visual notification appliances for a period of 15 minutes. All standby batteries shall be
continuously monitored by the power supply. Low battery and disconnection of battery
power supply conditions shall immediately annunciated as locally as battery trouble. All

power supply trouble conditions (DC power failure, ground faults, low batteries, and
IDC/NAC circuit faults) shall identify the specific remote power supply affected at the main
FACP. All power supply trouble conditions except loss of AC power shall report immediately.

The CCS and each ACU/FACP control panel audio system shall be connected to the TCP/IP

of encoding/decoding MP3, WMA, G.711 and PCM data streams in HTTP, UDP or RTP format,
depending on its application.
The encoder input audio shall be generated from dedicated FACP amplifier and attenuated to
the correct level using an audio bridge. Analog audio from the decoder shall connect to the
ACU/FACP audio source unit input. Signal monitoring shall be provided by supervisory
modules. The audio encoder/decoder shall operate on filtered-regulated 24 VDC power
derived from the FACP power supply, ensuring a reliable and monitored power source.

12.12 Printer
The printer shall provide hard-copy printout of all changes in status of the system and shall
time-stamp such printouts with the current time-of-day and date. The printer shall be
standard carriage with 80-characters per line and shall use standard pin-feed paper. The
printer shall be enclosed in a separate cabinet suitable for placement on a desktop or table.
The printer shall communicate with the control panel using an interface complying with
Electrical Industries Association standard EIA-232D. Power to the printer shall be 120 VAC @
60 Hz.
The system shall have a strip printer capable of being mounted directly in the main FACP
enclosure. Alarms shall be printed in easy-to-read RED, other messages, such as a trouble,
shall be printed in BLACK. This printer shall receive power from the system power supply
and shall operate via battery back-up if AC mains are lost. The strip printer shall be UL 864
listed.

• The operating controls shall be located in a dead-front steel enclosure behind a
locked door with viewing window. All control modules shall be labeled, and all zone
locations shall be identified. All panel modules shall be placement supervised for and
signal a trouble if damaged or removed.
• Devices and modules within panel shall individually identify each detection device,
and shall be designed such that any number of detection devices shall be identified as
being in alarm, trouble or normal condition at any one time. In addition, control
panel shall be designed such that analog sensitivity of each smoke detector is
measured on a continuous basis. System software shall provide a warning when an
individual smoke detector becomes contaminated and requires cleaning.
• System software shall allow sensitivity of each smoke detector to be individually
adjusted to best fit its particular environment.
• Provide separate indications for system trouble and supervisory alarms which shall
indicate whenever any system trouble or supervisory condition occurs. System
indication shall remain active at all times until system trouble or supervisory
conditions have been corrected.
• Provide an audible supervisory/trouble device which shall sound whenever any
system supervisory/trouble condition occurs. Provide a silence switch which shall
silence audible device. If silence switch is a momentary contact switch, any
subsequent condition shall resound audible device. If silence switch is a two-position
maintained contact switch, then, when system supervisory/trouble conditions have
been corrected, audible device shall again sound, indicating that silence switch must
be returned to normal position.
• Provide switches or other devices with control panel to allow operator to acknowledge
and reset system smoke detectors and system alarm conditions.
• Provide maintenance manual override key switches (6) which will allow an operator
to disable audible and visual alarms, mantrap release, elevator recall, HVAC
shutdown, water release solenoids, makeup water shutdown, and fire door release.
Upon activation of a bypass switch, a supervisory condition will be activated at the
panel.
• System addressable circuits shall be designed to Class A communications wiring.
Provide number of addressable modules required such that no addressable loop is
loaded to more than 80 percent of manufacturer’s recommended rated capacity.

devices. Software shall employ a time-based alarm retard function which shall verify
that received smoke detector alarms are valid before evacuation signals are
energized. The above alarm verification function shall apply only to smoke detection
devices. Manual pull stations, wet sprinkler system waterflow switches and other
alarm input devices shall be programmed to immediately activate evacuation signals
whenever an alarm condition occurs.
• FACP software shall be resident on electrically erasable, programmable read only
memory (EEPROM) or other non-volatile memory that may be reprogrammed.
System functions, such as activation of audible and visual devices shall be
reprogrammable if alarming requirements change, as additional requirements or
additions are added to building, or as Owner requirements change. FACP software
shall be reprogrammable such that any or all system initiating devices in building
may or may not activate audible and visual evacuation signaling devices in response
to certain alarm conditions.
• FACP shall be configured with an 80-character alphanumeric display which shall be
used to individually identify each system alarm and trouble condition. Alarm and
trouble conditions shall be identified using full English device and location
descriptions.
• System modules, peripheral devices and control wiring shall be supervised for opens,
shorts and grounds, and each condition shall be individually identified within system.
• System software shall be configured such that incoming fire alarm conditions will
override other modes of operation.
• Provide releasing module(s) with the panel for activating each preaction sprinkler
system solenoid valve. Releasing modules shall supervise the solenoid valve coil and
control circuit wiring. Sprinkler System contractor to provide solenoids UL listed with
the FACP releasing module.
• Provide a service disconnect keyswitch for each releasing module.
• Control panel shall contain notification appliance circuit modules, as required, to drive
audible and visual notification appliances. Provide quantity of modules required such
that no audible or visual notification appliance circuit is loaded to more than 80
percent of manufacturer’s written recommended rated capacity and that audible and
visual notification appliances on each notification appliance circuit receive full power.
Notification appliance circuit module quantities shall be apportioned to allow for total

• Provide interface relays as shown and specified. Relays shall also be required when
load of controlled equipment has a higher requirement than can be safely switched
directly from control panel modules. Relay contacts shall be sized for controlled
equipment and relay coils shall be supervised.
• Control panel shall contain UL listed 864 IP connectivity and fiber optic interface to
campus fiber optic Fire Alarm network as required to connect the fire alarm control
panel for the Data Center building, Central Utilities Building, and Fire Pump House to
a site fire alarm system network and reporting to a remote fire alarm graphical
command workstation at the Facility Maintenance Control Room such that alarm,
supervisory and trouble conditions will be reported. Control panels shall also interface
with graphical annunciator displays at the each entrance to the Data Hall such that
alarm, supervisory and trouble conditions will be reported.
• Battery Standby: Fire alarm system shall be equipped with 24-hour battery backup.
24-hour battery backup shall be defined as amount and size of batteries required to
power entire system in standby mode for a 24-hour period and, after 24-hour
standby period has expired, be capable of operating output functions, peripheral
devices and operation of audible and visual notification appliances for a period of 15
minutes. In event of a normal power outage, fire alarm system shall automatically
transfer to battery backup mode and shall indicate that system is operating on
standby power. Whenever normal power is restored, system shall automatically
transfer back to normal operation. Provide automatic charging of standby batteries.
Batteries shall be brought from fully discharged to a fully charged condition within 48
hours.
• Labelling must be executed on dual language English and Spanish.

14 ADDRESSABLE DEVICES
14.1 General
Fault Isolator Modules: Provide fault isolator modules where required to isolate individual
floors. If an addressable loop will span two (2) or more floors, a fault isolator module shall
be placed to isolate each floor from adjacent floor. In addition, if an individual floor requires
that more than twenty five (25) addressable devices be installed, a fault isolator module
shall be placed at various points in circuit so that sections are evenly divided and such that

Duct Smoke Detectors: Duct smoke detectors shall be of the photoelectric type and shall be
individually addressable. Duct smoke detectors shall derive their operating power from
initiating loop. Duct smoke detectors shall be complete with duct housing, duct sampling
tubes and sampling tube end caps. Duct smoke detectors with direct interface with
fire/smoke dampers shall have integral auxiliary contacts. Duct inlet sampling tubes shall be
of sufficient length to traverse full width of ductwork at installed location and protrude
through duct insulation on opposite side of ductwork for cleaning purposes. Outlet tubes
shall be as recommended in writing by duct smoke detector manufacturer. All duct smoke
detectors shall match building systems manufacturer. Each duct detector shall be listed for
complete range of air velocity, temperature, and humidity possible when air-handling
system is operating.
• Shall be Edwards SIGA-SD Series Duct Smoke Detectors.
Duct Smoke Detector Remote Test Stations: Provide, for each duct smoke detector, a plate-
mounted remote alarm indicator and test switch by manufacturer keyed specific. The test
station switch shall be utilized to simulate an alarm condition and the indicator shall
illuminate on an associated air handling system duct detector alarm condition. The test
station shall include a backbox suitable for mounting as required for the installed location.
Provide, with each station, a plate-mounted lamicoid label which shall identify the associated
air handling unit and whether the duct smoke detector is in the supply or return airstream,
for example: AHU-1 Return Duct Detector. The use of embossed labeling or the printing of
labels on the indicator plate is not acceptable. Labels must be mechanically fixed to wall
above switch.
Addressable Heat Detectors: Heat detectors shall be of the analog type, shall be individually
addressable and shall be combination rate of rise and fixed temperature type. Fixed
temperature setpoint for heat detectors shall be 135 degrees Fahrenheit, or where noted on
the drawings shall be190 degrees Fahrenheit. All addressable heat detectors shall derive
their operating power from the initiating loop and shall be mounted in a twist/lock base that
is interchangeable with other detector types. Each unit shall be equipped with an LED alarm
indicator. Module for heat detector must be mounted in an accessible location (68” AFF).
• Indoor 135 Degree F fixed-temperature heat detectors shall be an Edwards SIGA-HFS
with SIGA-SB4 base.

When sufficient smoke is sensed, an alarm signal is initiated at the FACP, and appropriate
action taken to change over air handling systems to help prevent the rapid distribution of
toxic smoke and fire gases throughout the areas served by the duct system.
15.1 Batteries
The battery shall have sufficient capacity to power the fire alarm system for not less than
twenty-four hours plus 5 minutes of alarm upon a normal AC power failure.
The batteries are to be completely maintenance free. No liquids are required. Fluid level
checks for refilling, spills, and leakage shall not be required.
If necessary to meet standby requirements, external battery and charger systems may be
used.

The electrical capacity shall allow the FACP to remain activated without power supply from
the electrical network (230 Volt) for 72 hours minimum ins stand-by mode and 1 hour with
20% of the horn, horn-strobe and circuits activated.
System shall consist of an air sampling pipe distribution network which shall include piping,
tubing, fittings and fasteners as specified herein. Piping shall originate from each ASSD
apparatus and to the protected area(s). Sampling points shall be placed along the air
sampling pipe distribution network in accordance with this Specification and the Drawings.
The air sampling pipe distribution network shall be supported by calculations from the
Manufacturer’s computer-based design modeling tool.
In operation, the aspiration fan in the ASSD apparatus draws air from the protected area(s)
through sampling points in the air sampling pipe distribution network to the ASSD detector
assembly where it is analyzed for concentration of fire products.
ASSD apparatus shall include independent configurable alarm and trouble relay outputs for
interface to other systems in accordance with this Specification and the Drawings.
ASSD apparatus shall integrate with FACP or SCP through a UL listed High Level Interface
(HLI).

particle types of varying size. A particle counting method shall be employed for the
purposes of:
o Preventing large particles from affecting the true smoke reading.
o Monitoring contamination of the filter (dust & dirt etc.) to automatically notify
when maintenance is required. The particle counting method shall not be
used for the purpose of smoke density measurement.
• Be equipped with an integral two-stage disposable filter cartridge. The first stage
shall be capable of filtering particles in excess of 20 microns from the air sample.
The second stage shall be ultra-fine, removing more than 99% of contaminant
particles of 0.3 microns or larger, to provide a clean air barrier across critical detector
optics to eliminate internal detector contamination.
• Be self monitoring for filter contamination and provide indication through system fault
when replacement is necessary. Detectors which allow automatic reset of filter
status upon removal and reinsertion are not permitted.
• Contain relays for alarm and fault conditions. The relays shall be software
programmable to the required functions.
• Be network capable, each with its own integral bus isolator and repeater.
• Be equipped with a general purpose input to allow either: Remote Reset, Isolate or
Standby.
• Be modular, with each detector monitored by an integral or externally mounted
Display Unit featuring indicator LED’s. For addressable detectors, indicators shall
identify which pipe is carrying smoke. Remote Display units shall incorporate integral
control buttons for Reset and Isolate.
• Permit configuration by Programmers that are either integral to the system, portable
or PC based.

and mounting methods selected meets this Specification, requirements of the local
AHJ and Manufacturer’s guidelines.
17 INSTALLATION
Installation shall be in accordance with the NEC, NFPA 72, local and state codes, as shown
on the drawings, and as recommended by the major equipment manufacturer.
Comply with local codes and standards, and in accordance with the Manufacturer’s written
instructions for installation of Air Sampling Detection systems.
Installation shall be in accordance with the NEC, NFPA 72, local and state codes, as shown

Manual fire alarm boxes shall be suitable for surface mounting or semi-flush mounting as
shown on the plans and shall be installed not less than 42 inches (1067 mm), nor more than
48 inches (122 mm) above the finished floor.
Provide, in accordance with the manufacturer's written instructions, all wiring, connections,
conduit and outlet boxes required for the installation of complete and operational fire alarm
system as specified herein and indicated on Drawings as follows:
• Fire alarm and fire protection related wiring and cabling run below 12 feet AFF in
exposed areas such as mechanical rooms, electrical rooms, loading docks etc. shall
be installed in conduit. Wiring run above 12 feet and in concealed areas such as
above suspended ceilings and in walls may be run exposed. All exposed wiring shall
be run in communications cable tray or supported by brackets and hangers designed
for the installed application. Exposed wiring shall not be laid on or supported by
suspended ceilings. All exposed wiring shall be plenum rated. All wiring and cabling
run in system cabinets shall be neatly dressed and bundled using wire ties.
• Fire alarm Fiber Optic cables shall be run in accordance with Division 27.
• Install wall-mounted equipment, with tops of cabinets not more than 78 inches above
the finished floor.
• Provide, with each terminal box that contain termination of cables for future work, a
plate-mounted lamicoid label which shall identify the associated type of and circuit
designation of cables terminated in the box. The use of embossed labeling or the
printing of labels on the terminal box is not acceptable. Labels must be mechanically
fixed to the terminal box. Each box shall be painted red and have “FIRE ALARM FOR
FUTURE USE” and circuit designations for example: “SLC 001-1.”
• Manual Pull Stations shall be installed in the normal path of egress within 60 inches of
the exit doorway. The operable part of manual pull stations shall be between 42
inches and 48 inches above the finished floor. All devices shall be mounted at the
same height unless otherwise indicated.
• Preaction system alarm solenoid valves, low air pressure switches and sprinkler
system flow and tamper switches will be furnished and installed by the Division 21
Contractor. Provide all conduit, wiring and final connections to all fire protection
system solenoids, contacts and switches. Flexible conduit run from junction boxes to
the fire protection system devices shall be liquid tight. Coordinate actual device and
interface contact locations with the Division 21 Contractor.

• Furnish duct smoke detectors, sampling tubes and end caps to the Division 23
Contractor for installation. Provide all conduit, wiring and connections from all duct
smoke detectors to the FACP. Comply with NFPA 72 and NFPA 90A. Install sampling
tubes so they extend the full width of duct. Tubes no more than 36 inches long shall
be supported at both ends. Smoke detectors for damper control shall be located
within 5 feet of damper.
• Provide all conduit, wiring and connections required between fire alarm system
addressable output modules and each fan starter for air handling unit shutdown.
Coordinate final connections and exact location of fan starters with Division 23
Contractor.
• Interface is required between the FACP and the Security System for the transmission
of fire alarm condition, release of door hold, and man-trap signals to the Security
System. Provide all conduit, wiring and connections between each fire alarm system
addressable output module and the associated security system interface point.
Coordinate final connections and the location of all security system interface points
with the Division 28 Security System Contractor.
• Interface is required between the FACP and the BAS for the transmission of air
handling unit duct detector status, fire alarm condition, status of make-up water
shutdown valve, signals to the BAS. Provide all conduit, wiring and connections
between each fire alarm system addressable output module and the associated BAS
interface point. Coordinate final connections and the location of all BAS interface
points with the Division 23 BAS Contractor.
• When a duct smoke detector is mounted above the ceiling, the remote indicator and
label for that detector shall be mounted on the ceiling directly below the detector.
When a duct smoke detector is located in an exposed location, for example,
mechanical room, the remote test station and label shall be wall mounted at eye level
on an accessible wall near the associated fan system. Provide all conduit, wiring and
connections from each duct smoke detector to the associated remote test station.
• Elevator controls will be provided by the Division 14 Contractor. Provide all interface
conduit, wiring and connections to elevator control panels for primary and secondary
elevator recall. Elevator recall wiring shall not be connected directly to individual
smoke detectors. Coordinate the location of each elevator recall panel with the
Division 14 Contractor.
• Provide conduit, wiring and connections to elevator power panel contactors and
shunt-trip circuit breakers for elevator power shutdown. Coordinate location of each

individual circuit shall contain more than 75 percent of the manufacturer’s rated
capacity of devices. All wiring provided for notification appliance circuits shall be
configured as Class A, as indicated on system details.
• Provide addressable device wiring such that no circuit or loop contains more than 80
percent of the manufacturer’s rated capacity of addressable input and output devices.
All wiring provided for addressable loops shall be configured as Class A, as indicated
on system details.
• All wiring provided for initiating device circuits shall be configured as Class A, as
indicated on system details.
• Provide all conduit and fault isolator wiring required such that fire alarm initiating
devices on each floor of the building will be isolated during signaling line circuit short-
circuit conditions, as indicated.
• Low-voltage fire alarm related wiring shall not be run in the same conduit as 120 volt
power wiring.
• The 120 V ac power panel circuits for system equipment has been reserved and is
indicated on Panel Schedules on Electrical Drawings. Provide all conduit, wiring and
connections from the power panel to all fire alarm system related equipment and all
internal cabinet wiring and connections. Coordinate the actual power panel location
and circuit allocation with the Division 26 Electrical Contractor.
• Fire alarm system devices shall be surface mounted in unfinished areas and flush
mounted in finished areas.
• Addressable input and output modules shall be mounted on suitable electrical boxes
and installed at the controlled or monitored device. The grouping of modules at
locations remote from controlled or monitored devices is not acceptable. All modules
shall be located where they are easily accessible for future maintenance. Modules
shall be installed above the suspended ceiling in finished areas and surface mounted
in unfinished areas. Output modules shall be located within 3 feet of the controlled
device.
• All wiring run within equipment enclosures, wireways or cabinets shall be neatly
bundled, tied and permanently attached to the cabinet interior.

• The fire alarm system supplier shall be responsible for the generation, loading and
checking of all software and programming required for each system and all software
updates required for the site-wide central fire alarm system. This work shall be
performed with the assistance of the Owner’s personnel, who will act in a
coordinating role to ensure that all desired parameters and information are as desired
and that all information is correctly entered. Database loading and checking shall be
defined as anything necessary to permit proper and complete system operation. This
development shall include, but not be limited to, defining of device identification
names and titles, system priority levels, necessary sequences and system activation
information. Owner shall be notified thirty (30) days before the data input procedure
is started. All final database information shall be stored in non-volatile memory.
• Cable and wiring sizing and construction type shall be in accordance with Division 26.
All power and control work for each system shall be done in accordance with Division
26 requirements.
• Monitor all fire pump signals per NFPA 20 and water storage tank signals per NFPA

• Piping shall be cleaned and free of dust and debris before final installation.
• For areas where piping is installed as part of modular hot aisle containment system,
the sampling holes shall be drilled after installation of modular system inside the
building.
• In seismic zones installation techniques shall be in compliance with the geographical
seismic zone requirements per the AHJ.
Pipe Mounting:
• The air sampling pipe network shall be mounted in accordance with the
Manufacturer’s written installation and instruction manuals, and local codes and
standards. The hardware used for mounting will depend upon the design and site
requirements.
• To minimize flexing the pipes shall be secured every 5 ft (1.5 m).
• When installing a pipe network in areas subject to high temperature fluctuations
allow for the contraction and expansion of pipes.
• Where expansion or contraction of pipes is likely either after installation or on a
continuous basis, do not place pipe clips adjacent to couplings and socket unions as
these may interfere with the movement of the pipe.
• No bends are permitted within the first 18 inches (457 mm) from the detector inlet.
• Piping shall be mounted as close to the ceiling as possible.
• The routing of the piping network shall be coordinated with potential obstructions,
including cable trays, grounding bars, and HVAC ductwork.
• All changes in direction shall be made with standard elbows or tees.
• All joints shall be air-tight and made by using solvent cement, except at the entry to
the detector assembly. Refer to ASTM F402-88 standard practice for safe handling of
solvent cements, primers and cleaners used for joining thermoplastic pipe and
fittings.
• Flexible tubing for termination of the sampling pipe network into detector inlet is not
permitted.
• All pipes shall be supported by mechanical hangers attached to the structure of the
building. Not more than one foot of pipe shall extend beyond the last hanger of each
sampling pipe. The final installation shall result in no noticeable deflection in the
piping network.
• Attachment of air sampling pipe networks to cable trays is prohibited.

Wiring within Enclosures: Separate power-limited and non-power-limited conductors as
recommended by manufacturer. Install conductors parallel with or at right angles to sides
and back of the enclosure. Bundle, lace, and train conductors to terminal points with no
excess. Connect conductors that are terminated, spliced, or interrupted in any enclosure
associated with the fire alarm system to terminal blocks. Mark each terminal according to
the system's wiring diagrams. Make all connections with approved crimp-on terminal spade
lugs, pressure-type terminal blocks, or plug connectors.
T-tapping: T-tapping shall not be permitted on any Notification Appliance Circuit, Initiating
Device Circuit, Inter-panel Signaling Line Circuit or Addressable Device Signaling Line
Circuit. T-tapping of the FireWorks Fiber Optic Ethernet network shall only be permitted
where approved by the owner and shall only occur in an Edwards MN-FNS18CF2 switch
using a lobe port to the isolated section.
Fiber optic cabling is not to be spliced. Termination and connection to new fiber optic cable
shall occur only at patch panels.

17.4 Fire alarm system alarm operation
Activation of any fire alarm or fire protection manual or automatic alarm initiation device
(except as indicated below), in a building shall initiate the following sequence in the
associated building in alarm:
• Activate all fire alarm system audible and visual notification appliances throughout all
areas of the building. Devices in any area or individual room shall be synchronized.
All audible devices shall produce a horn tone in a Code 3, temporal pattern followed
by a voice message.
• Activate fire alarm speakers only and play alert voice message in other campus
buildings.
• Display alarm location and device information on FACP, LOC, graphical command
workstation, and graphic annunciator panels.
• Display alarm location and device information on the graphic annunciator panel at the
site entrance security kiosk.
• Provide a dry contact output to each mantrap to cause them to automatically open
for egress.
• Release doors which are electrically held open.
• Release doors with delayed egress hardware.
• Provide a dry contact alarm output signal to the security system.
• Provide a dry contact alarm output signal to the BAS system.
Whenever any supply or return duct smoke detector associated with an air handling unit
initiates an alarm, individual dry contact transfers from addressable output modules located
near associated fan starters (1 output per fan starter), shall deenergize associated air
handling unit’s supply and return fans. Air handling unit duct detector alarm conditions shall
initiate a supervisory signal only and shall not cause audible and visual evacuation devices to
be energized. In addition, an individual dry contact closure from an addressable output
module located adjacent to selected BAS control panel shall transmit an individual air
handling unit status signal to BAS (one (1) output to BAS per air handling unit).
Whenever any duct smoke detector associated with a fire/smoke damper signals that an
alarm exists, the auxiliary contact in the detector shall close the damper.
Whenever any smoke detector on either side of a roll up fire shutter signals that an alarm
exists, transmit a dry contact signal to the fire shutter controller to cause it to close.

Whenever elevator machine room, elevator shaft or any elevator lobby smoke detector on
any floor except primary egress floor of the building signals that an alarm exists, a dry
contact closure from an addressable output module shall recall elevator to the primary
egress floor (primary recall). Whenever primary egress floor elevator lobby smoke detector
signals that an alarm exists, elevator shall be recalled to secondary egress floor (secondary
recall). Whenever elevator machine room or elevator shaft smoke detector signals that an
alarm exists, a dry contact closure from an addressable output module shall indicate that the
elevator may be unsafe for use.
Whenever any elevator machine room heat detector senses an alarm condition, FACP shall
transmit a signal to associated electrical shunt trip circuit breaker to disconnect power from
associated elevator.
Upon activation of a preaction sprinkler system low air pressure switch and two smoke, heat
detectors or separate VESDA pipe zones in Fire 2 or combination in the associated preaction
zone shall:

Sprinkler system trouble and supervisory conditions, duct smoke detectors and other
supervisory devices, shall indicate a supervisory condition only, and shall not, under any
circumstances, initiate alarm sequences.
The activation of a keyed disconnect at the 24v supply to disable the output from the release
module shall trigger a trouble alarm.
18 IDENTIFICATION
Install framed instructions in a location visible from each ASSD apparatus.
Identification shall include corresponding detector zone number, associated power supply
number.
19 FIELD TESTS
Prior to formal inspection and testing, clean and test each smoke detector that has not been
covered at the supplier’s factory and remained covered during the entire construction period.
All smoke detectors shall be cleaned according to the manufacturer’s written
recommendations. Notify Owner before smoke detector cleaning is started so that periodic
inspection of the cleaning process may be performed.

All system equipment shall be 100 percent tested per NFPA 72 by Contractor and all system
malfunctions corrected before Owner and Engineer of Record is advised that any formal
acceptance testing is ready to begin. Contractor to provide A preliminary hardcopy test
report results of shall be given to Owner and Engineer of Record after the acceptance testing
is complete indicating when each smoke detector was cleaned (if applicable) and tested, and
the results of the preliminary testing including quantitative intelligibility testing and any
problems encountered and/or repaired.
Final field tests shall be performed under the supervision of a factory-trained field technician
in the presence of Engineer of Record Representative and Owner’s Representative. Tests
shall be performed on each circuit and device of each system (100 percent test). On any
circuit where malfunctions occur, the defective device within the malfunctioning circuit shall
be repaired and retested. A comprehensive hardcopy field test report shall be given to
Owner and Engineer of Record upon completion of the formal test.
All preliminary and final field test hard copy report formats shall be structured to show an
individual reference to each point and/or zone within each system. The format shall be
structured to indicate the test date for each device tested and the results of each test. Each
test report page shall be signed by the Contractor’s Representative who witnessed the
associated test.
Provide personnel and equipment required to perform formal and informal acceptance
testing and test reporting. Engineer of Record and Owner’s Representatives will act in an
observation role only with reference to formal system testing.
20 WITNESS TEST
Provide a witness test of the Fire Alarm System and FireWorks software operation at a
mutually agreed location with the owner. Witness test to be one day and is to review high-
level overall operation of the system.

analysis, settings adjustment and compensatory measures should adjustment exceed
minimum performance requirements as outlined herein.

Testing of systems shall be coordinated as required below with the respective Engineer of
Record as indicated on the drawings.
The system Contractor shall draft and submit, to the Engineer and the Owner’s
Representative, for approval, a detailed Method of Procedure (MOP) commissioning plan, per
area, which outlines all commissioning activities and identifies each activity and test, zone
specific, necessary for a complete verification of the design and operation prior to start of
testing.
The complete system shall be functionally tested in the presence of Engineer and/or Owner’s
Representative and all functions must be operational at least five (5) days prior to the final
acceptance tests.
Before energizing the cables and wires, check for correct connections and test for short
circuits, ground faults, continuity, and insulation.

• Visual Inspection: Conduct visual inspection prior to testing.
• Correct malfunctioning equipment, and then retest to demonstrate compliance.
Replace equipment that cannot be corrected or does not perform as specified and
indicated, then retest to demonstrate compliance. Repeat procedure until satisfactory
results are obtained.
• Report test results promptly and in writing to Architect / Engineer, the Owner’s
Representative and Authorities Having Jurisdiction.
Acceptance Tests:
• Prior to final acceptance, the installing contractor shall provide complete operation
and maintenance instruction manuals as indicated in this Specification Part 1,
Closeout Submittals and Documents. All aspects of system operation and
maintenance shall be detailed, including piping isometrics, wiring diagrams of all
circuits, a written description of the system design, sequence of operation and
drawing(s) illustrating control logic and equipment used in the system. Checklists
and procedures for emergency situations, troubleshooting techniques, maintenance
operations and procedures shall be included in the manual.
• Final Acceptance Test shall begin only when the Preliminary Test Report has been
approved. Final Acceptance Test must be witnessed by Engineer of Records
Representative and Owner’s Representative. At least two weeks’ notice must be
provided to Owner and Engineer of Record.

• As-Built Drawings and previous test results shall be available at the time of testing.
• The installation shall not be considered accepted until identified discrepancies have
been corrected and test documentation is properly completed and received.
• Failure of system during Acceptance Test in which requires Engineer of Record
Representative and Owner’s Representative to make a return trip for testing shall be
paid for at Contractors expense.
Upon acceptance by the Engineer and the Owner’s Representative, the completed system(s)
shall be placed into service.
A total of one (1) formal training session in a classroom-type setting shall be held at the
Project Site by the system supplier at mutually agreed upon times between Owner’s
Representative and supplier. Training session shall be a minimum of eight (8) hours in
length and shall cover all information required by a system operator to properly interface
with the system. Owner’s Representative shall notify the system supplier at least two (2)
weeks prior to the agreed upon training date with the names of each attendee. System
supplier shall provide each attendee with a Basic System Operations Manual. Those
attendees who will be responsible for general day-to-day maintenance shall receive one (1)
additional eight (8) hour session of maintenance training, and an Operation and Maintenance
(O&M) Manual.

Manufacturer’s standard catalog cuts are not acceptable for use as O&M manuals. Items
included with the O&M manuals shall include, but not be limited to, the following:

diagrams included with Project Record Drawings.
• Descriptions of all operational sequences.
• Manufacturer’s installation and maintenance literature.
• Detailed descriptions of periodic testing procedures, NFPA 72.

Field set-up time, start-up time, testing time, for example, shall not be considered as
training time.
• Furnish training for a minimum of four (4) Owner designated employees of the
system user:
As part of the bid/proposal, include a quote for a maintenance contract to provide all
maintenance, tests, and repairs described below. Include also a quote for unscheduled
maintenance/repairs, including hourly rates for technicians trained on this equipment, and
response travel costs for each year of the maintenance period. Submittals that do not
identify all post contract maintenance costs will not be accepted. Rates and costs shall be
valid for the period of five (5) years after expiration of the guaranty.
As part of the submittal, include a quotation for all parts and material, and all installation
and test labor as needed to increase the number of intelligent or addressable devices by ten

percent (10%). This quotation shall include intelligent smoke detectors, intelligent heat
detectors, addressable manual stations, addressable monitor modules and addressable
modules equal in number to one tenth of the number required to meet this specification (list
actual quantity of each type).
The quotation shall include installation, test labor, and labor to reprogram the system for
this 10% expansion. If additional FACP hardware is required, include the material and labor
necessary to install this hardware.
Do not include cost of conduit or wire or the cost to install conduit or wire except for labor to
make final connections at the FACP and at each intelligent addressable device. Do not
include the cost of conventional peripherals or the cost of initiating devices or notification
appliances connected to the addressable monitor/control modules.
Submittals that do not include this estimate of post contract expansion cost will not be
accepted.
28 WARRANTY
Contractor shall guarantee the entire system, including all wiring and equipment to be free
of defects in workmanship and material for a period of one (1) year from the Date of Final
Acceptance by Owner.
