International hydrographic office, IHO,


has categorized ENCs based on six
kinds of navigational purposes.
Let us discuss Electronic
Navigational Chart (ENC)
purpose & scales and the
importance of navigating
with appropriate ENCs.
Overview ENC

Purpose
Route planning and ocean passage before progressing to General Chart for landfall purposes.

General ENC

Purpose
Landfall identification and non-oceanic route planning.

Coastal ENC

Purpose
Coastal navigation and coastal shipping routes.
Approach ENC

Purpose
For navigating in the approaches to ports, in major channels or through intricate or congested waters.

Harbor ENC

Purpose
For port entry, and navigating within ports, harbors,anchorages, bays, rivers and canals.

Berthing ENC

Purpose
To aid berthing, at very large scales.
Let us look at the significant
differences by comparing
an Overview and Larger
scale ENC.
It is important that a
navigator understands the
basic differences in
information shown on an
Overview and Coastal
ENC

The comparison of these two ENCS


shows that the Overview ENC lacks many
details shown in the Coastal ENC.

It can be clearly seen that the details


in an Overview ENC is grossly
insufficient for safe navigation.

Yes sir, it is clear that there is


no useful information for safe
navigation.
The comparison shows that an
Overview ENC lacks the important
details shown in a Coastal ENC.

The whole port on this Coastal


ENC is not shown on the Overview
ENC. Please compare the red
frame here with the one below.

That's huge difference, sir.


The small scale ENCs
lack lots of details.

I will never use Overview


ENC even for planning a
Coastal voyage.
Now let us take a closer look
at what could happen
if anyone plans and navigates
a Coastal passage on an
Overview ENC.

plot a route using the Overview
ENC only just for our simulation?

Now let us see how this course
appears on a Coastal ENC.

Oh my god!!!! the course line runs


through an island!!! it can be disastrous!!!!!!!

Well observed second mate,


you can right away see the
dangers on a large scale ENC.
As you have seen,
an Island is actually there

but it’s not entirely


visible on the Overview ENC.

And even more dangerous is


that the soundings are marked
on the Overview ENC in
different positions.
Soundings are at different
position compared to the
Large scale chart

And notice that shoals not shown Shoals


on the Overview ENC are shown
on Coastal ENC.

The entire shoal is missing


The shoals shown on the in the Overview ENC
Coastal ENC are missing in
the Overview ENC
Yes sir, we understood it well.

So, Mates. As Overview ENC lack


many details, Coastal Passage
must never be planned or
executed on an Overview ENC.

So please keep in mind the basic


rule, that is
To plan a safe passage all
appropriate ENC scales especially
large scale ENC should be used.
