Objectives: At the end of this session, you are expected to:

 Define unscripted commentary and identify its different types; and


 use appropriate vocal and nonverbal techniques to enhance the delivery of
unscripted commentary.

I. ACTIVITY

To kickstart your journey into the language of unscripted commentary, start by watching a
sports commentary session or a stand-up comedy show. Observe how the commentators or
comedians engage with the audience and deliver their commentary without a script. Take note
of their language choices, delivery style, and ability to adapt to unexpected situations. Use the

II. ABSTRACTION

Unscripted Commentary

Unscripted commentary refers to the spontaneous and unplanned delivery of


commentary or remarks in various contexts such as sports, entertainment, or live events.
Unlike scripted commentary, unscripted commentary requires individuals to think on their
feet, adapt quickly, and engage with the audience. The language used in unscripted
commentary plays a crucial role in conveying emotions, enhancing the audience's
experience, and effectively delivering the intended message.

Features of Unscripted Commentary

 Clarity and conciseness: Commentators must be able to communicate complex

 Accuracy and objectivity: Commentators must be accurate in their reporting of
events and objective in their analysis. They must avoid expressing personal
opinions or biases.
 Engagement and excitement: Commentators must be able to engage and excite
the audience. They can do this by using vivid imagery, descriptive language, and
humor.

Purpose and Use:

- Enhancing Viewer Experience: Unscripted commentary adds depth, context, and


entertainment value to live events, improving the viewer's understanding and engagement.

- Providing Analysis: Commentators often offer expert analysis, strategy breakdowns, or


opinions to give viewers a better understanding of the event or activity.

- Creating Atmosphere: Commentary helps create a dynamic and immersive experience,


adding excitement, humor, or drama to the broadcast.

- Informing and Educating: Commentary can provide additional information, historical


context, or explanations to educate viewers about the subject matter.

Skills and Techniques:

1. Play-by-Play Description: Providing a detailed, real-time account of the action,


describing movements, plays, or highlights.
