EFFECTS OF EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES ON ACADEMIC
PERFORMANCE AMONG GRADE – 11 STUDENTS
IN CAWAYAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
S.Y 2023-2024
Chapter 1
Rationale
Extracurricular activity refers to any organized activity that takes place
outside of the regular school curriculum. These activities defined as something
done for pleasure or purpose that usually involves a group ( Merriam – Webster,
2016). Extracurricular activities comprise sports, singing, music, debate, dance,
drama, social services, etc. School can play a significant role by transmitting the
energy of both normal as well as physically challenged students into s positive
direction of personality development through extracurricular activities. In modern
approaches of education, one way to emphasize the all – ground activities
development of student is by allowing them to get involved in co - curricular
activities, since education comprises in a society where teenagers are more
interested in sports , extracurricular activities, music, and parental involvement
than schoolwork, all of these factors have an impact on how well teens do
academically.
A study conducted in Pakistan, found that students participating in
extracurricular activities possess high grades, higher standardized extra curricular
activities were less able to utilize drugs and alcohol, give up on school, misbehave,
and commit crime at the school level, test results, excellent educational adaption,
more attended school, higher self – trust and good personality development (
Kanar and Bouckenooghe, 2021 ).
In 2017, the researcher argue how the involvement of extracurricular
activities affect the performance and participation of students in the academic
aspect of the Senior High School students of Rizal Memorial Institute of Dapitan
City ( Golemit et al., 2017 ). Accenting to the Department of Education ( DEPED )
memorandum of Republic Act 10533 at enhance the Basic Education Act of 2013
K – 12 law , grades between academic and extracurricular activities are not be
added to the overall grades anymore. The study significant to let the students know
how to handle extracurricular activity and in deciding how much time the should
they should allocated in a certain study.
Based also on the study of Recio et al. (2021), academic engagement
among students is high, with most attending class daily and contributing to their
academic performance. However , there is no significant relationship between
academic engagement and GPA among Senior High School students in the
University of Cebu – Main Campus during the 2021 – 2022 school year. Students
with high academic engagement achieve better academic performance, while
those with moderate performance may struggle.
Therefore, this study aims to determine the effects of extracurricular
activities on the academic performance among grade - 11 students in Cawayan
National High School. Hence, there's a study that says extracurricular activities
contribute to the academic performance and some studies are not. The
researchers want to determine if the participation of extracurricular activities does
have an effect on student's academic performance.
Theoretical Framework
James Coleman’s Multiple Role Theory
There is no universal agreement on whether or not a student’s involvement
in extracurricular activities, including athletics and clubs, will improve academic
performance. Extracurricular activities are thought to improve academic
performance theoretically. Extracurricular activities provide additional,
complimentary roles for a student that benefits for a student academically because
the added role of athlete, for example, increases self – esteem and overall
participation/investment in school, which can boost grades ( Hunt, 2005)
Welberg’s Theory
According to Welberg’s ( 1981), the integration of individual and institutional
factors that may affect academic accomplishment makes this research significant.
No study has looked into the relationship between the following set of variables:
student – faculty interaction, student involvement in learning through active
learning strategies, quality of instruction, institutional learning and support
infrastructure in terms of library and computer resources, and student academic
outcome. This is despite the fact that many studies have focused on student –
faculty interaction and the effect it has on student academic performance.
Additionally, this study is significant because elements within and outside the
classroom are investigated to see If they have an impact on students’ academic
progress. The likelihood of adding to the body of knowledge in this discipline will
increase as a result of the discoveries leading to new hypothesis.
Review of Related Literature
This section delves on extensive reviews of references that are useful as
supplementary materials of the research topic. This is a detailed review of
existing literatures related to extracurricular activities on academic performance.
It attempts to explore on sources that are useful to enrich the research study on
the effect of extracurricular activities on academic performance by consulting
thesis or dissertation, journal and published online source formats.
Extracurricular Activities
Students that participate in extracurricular activities benefit from the chance
to interact, gain knowledge and develop soft skills. Community service initiatives
outside of the classroom have quickly integrated themselves into student life.
Students can join volunteer clubs, professional clubs, interest clubs, and talent
clubs. Additionally, a lot of young people take part in both big and little projects
with clear objectives that directly help the neighborhood ( Le Phuong Thao,2022).
Students can greatly benefit from extracurricular activities on a professional,
moral, and social level. Any planned activity directed by adults that takes place
outside of the typical classroom environment during the school year is referred to
as an extracurricular activity (El-Batri and Alami , 2019). Extracurricular activities
are used to develop kid’s talents and sharpen their thinking skills (Inriyani,2017).
Student’s intellectual and social abilities can be enhanced by the causal use of
extracurricular activities outside of the classroom to develop learning opportunities
and a sense of self-confidence ( Saputra, 2020). Although there is a ton of study
on the subject extracurricular activities in schools, the majority of the literature is
written from a Western cultural perspective, and there is still little research on
extracurricular activities in the Asian region ( Jallani, 2017). The effects of
extracurricular activities on participants and schools are extensive. Extracurricular
activities promote favorable academic, psychological, and socio – emotional
results (Donelly, 2019). There is a significant relationship between extracurricular
activities and the application of character education, as extracurricular activities
produce values and the formation of high morals in participant’s social lives
through the embodiment of academic knowledge learned in class, attitudes, and
skills (Dhallyana,2017).
Academic Performance
Nowadays, education is considered as a first step for every human activity.
It plays a vital role in the development of human capital and is linked with an
individual’s well- being and opportunities for better living. Student’s performance
remains at top priority for educators. It is meant for making a difference locally,
regionally, nationally and globally. In educational institution, success is measured
by academic performance, or how well a student meets standard set out by
institution itself ( Shahzadi and Ahmad, 2013).
If the academic reinforcement is applied in accordance with a defined
institutional planning, the results of the diagnostic tests and the formative
evaluation in each school cycle, including the implementation of virtual learning
environments in conjunction with permanent and personalized reinforcements as
proposed, it is possible that the academic performance of the students is
significantly improved, avoiding substitution processes in the sublevel of study
(Vallejo and Carrillo, 2020). Academic performance is tied to both the classroom
environment and teacher tactics in variational thinking because it is viewed as the
culmination of a learning process that can be influenced by a range or factors
(Corredor and Bailey, 2020). Early academic performance prediction is a crucial
component of educational research since it not only assists teachers in creating
timely interventions but also promotes individualized instruction. Identifying crucial
elements that influence pupil’s academic performance is the main challenge.
Academic performance has been shown to be connected with factors like
socioeconomic background, IQ and even physical health. On the other hand, these
traits are generally stable over time and are challenging to alter by educational
administration (Huaxiu Yao,2019).
