Assignment 1

This document contains 6 problems related to oscillatory motion with damping. Problem 1 involves determining properties of a red bag oscillating on a spring from its acceleration graph. Problem 2 involves calculating properties of a rotating gold disk suspended by a wire. Problem 3 involves calculating the damping constant of a damped spring-ball system. Problem 4 involves calculating the frequency and critical damping of a cat on a spring. Problems 5 and 6 involve proving equations for damped and driven oscillatory motion.

Assignment (7 mark)

1. A red bag oscillates at the end of an ideal spring with a force constant of 2.50 N/cm.
The graph in Figure 1 displays the acceleration of the bag over time. Without friction
and air resistance, determine (a) the mass of the bag; (b) the maximum displacement of
the bag from the equilibrium point; and (c) the maximum force exerted by the spring
on the bag.
2. A uniform, solid gold disk with a mass of 6.50 kg and a diameter of 24.0 cm is
suspended in a horizontal plane. It is supported at its center by a vertical metal wire.
You discover that it takes a horizontal force of 4.23 N, tangent to the rim of the disk, to
rotate it by 3.34° and twist the wire. After removing the force, the disk is released from
rest. Determine (a) the torsion constant of the metal wire; (b) the frequency and period
of the torsional oscillations of the disk; and (c) the equation of motion for the disk.
3. A ball weighing 50.0 g moves on the end of a spring with a force constant of k = 25.0
N/m. It has an initial displacement of 0.300 m. A damping force F = -bv acts on the
ball, and the amplitude of the motion decreases to 0.100 m in 5.00 s. Calculate the
magnitude of the damping constant b.
4. A grumpy cat weighing 0.300 kg moves on the end of a spring with a force constant of
k = 2.50 N/m. It is subjected to a damping force F = -bv. Determine (a) the frequency
of oscillation of the cat if the constant b has a value of 0.900 kg/s; and (b) the value of
the constant b for which the motion becomes critically damped.
