Reset The CMOS Using Motherboard Specifications Steps
Use the CMOS reset steps from the motherboard specifications to reset the CMOS and
recover the BIOS.
1. Turn off the computer, and then disconnect the AC adapter from the
desktop.
2. Press the power button 10 times to fully discharge electricity from
the system.
3. Open the computer to access the system board.
4. Follow the CMOS reset steps for your computer model. See Find the
CMOS reset instructions specific to your computer model number .
5. Reassemble the computer.
6. Reconnect the AC adapter to the computer.
7. Press and hold the power button for 20 seconds.
8. Release the power button and the system boots.
A message displays confirmation that the CMOS is reset. The message on your
computer might vary. If this does not recover your computer, see Recover the BIOS .

desktop.
2. Press the power button 10 times to fully discharge electricity from

3. Open the computer to access the system board.
4. Remove or disconnect the CMOS battery from the system board.

If this recovery method fails, use another working computer to create a BIOS recovery
flash drive to install the latest BIOS file.
Perform a clear CMOS (Desktops)
For desktop computers released after April 2016, follow these steps to reset computer
CMOS data.
NOTE: The following steps work for many HP computers. Go to HP Customer
Support and locate the service, maintenance, or user guide for your PC for specific
instructions.
1. Turn off the computer.
2. Press and hold the Windows and the V keys.
3. While still pressing those keys, press and hold the Power button for 2-3 seconds.
4. Release all the keys.
5. At the completion of a successful CMOS reset, a CMOS Reset (502) message
displays.
6. Restart the computer.
7. If the symptoms persist and the computer does not start after the CMOS has been
reset, perform a BIOS recovery.
Desktop computers released before April 2016 require opening the case of the computer
to access the “Clear CMOS Jumpers”. The location of the jumpers may be indicated by a
diagram on the inside of the access door. Otherwise, the jumpers are marked on the system
board itself.
NOTE: The following steps work for many HP computers. Go to HP Customer
Support and locate the service, maintenance, or user guide for your PC for specific
instructions.
1. Turn off the computer.
2. Remove the power cable.
3. Open the desktop and access the “CMOS jumpers.”
4. Move the jumper to the “clear” setting as indicated in the picture below.
5. Leave in this position for at least 10 seconds and then return the jumper to its
original position as indicated in the picture
below.
6. Close the desktop.
7. Return the power cable.
8. Power on computer.
9. At the completion of a successful CMOS reset, a CMOS Reset (502) message
displays.
10. Restart the computer.
