Table 1.1
The materials are to be used to insulate two high voltage systems with electrode configurations
summarized in Table 1.2. Each configuration will result in 85 kV voltage difference between the
electrodes under normal condition.

(a) It has been observed that some of these materials experience a complete breakdown immediately
after the systems are energized. For each configuration, determine the material that experiences
breakdown and evaluate carefully what was the reason for this occurrence.
(b) If all of the dielectric materials listed in Table 1.1 are to be used to insulate both high voltage
systems described in Table 1.2, discuss how their geometrical designs can be modified in order to
prevent the occurrence of insulation breakdown experienced by the dielectrics as described in (a).
EEPB463 High Voltage Technology
A third high voltage system comprising two planar electrodes is shown in Figure 1.1. Similar to the
aforementioned systems, the voltage difference between the two electrodes is measured to be 85 kV
but their separation is fixed at 10 mm.

(c) By redrawing the two electrodes illustrated in Figure 1.1, sketch the electric field lines between
them.
(d) If the field enhancement factor for this system is estimated to be 5.5, evaluate the suitability of
using the materials listed in Table 1.1 to insulate the region between the two electrodes.
