4 Topic 1 - Example Questions 4

This document discusses insulating materials for high voltage systems. It provides data on three insulating materials - gas X, liquid Y, and solid Z - including their relative permittivity and breakdown strength. Two high voltage systems are described with concentric spheres and cylinders configurations, both with an 85 kV voltage difference. For each system, the material that would experience immediate breakdown is identified and the reason explained. Modifications to the geometric designs are discussed to prevent breakdown. A third system with planar electrodes 10 mm apart is shown, and asked to draw the electric field lines between them given a field enhancement factor of 5.5. The suitability of the insulating materials is then evaluated for this third system.

Topic 1: Introduction to Electric Field Stress and Insulation

Example 4
Three insulating materials in different forms with different dielectric characteristics are listed in Table 1.1
shown below.

RELATIVE BREAKDOWN STRENGTH

MATERIAL FORM
PERMITTIVITY (kV/mm)
X Gas 1 9
Y Liquid 2.1 12
Z Solid 3.2 42

Table 1.1

The materials are to be used to insulate two high voltage systems with electrode configurations
summarized in Table 1.2. Each configuration will result in 85 kV voltage difference between the
electrodes under normal condition.

ELECTRODE
DIMENSION (mm)
CONFIGURATION
Inner radius = 12 mm
Concentric Spheres
Outer radius = 40 mm
Inner radius = 5 mm
Concentric Cylinders
Outer radius = 10 mm

Table 1.2

(a) It has been observed that some of these materials experience a complete breakdown immediately
after the systems are energized. For each configuration, determine the material that experiences
breakdown and evaluate carefully what was the reason for this occurrence.

(b) If all of the dielectric materials listed in Table 1.1 are to be used to insulate both high voltage
systems described in Table 1.2, discuss how their geometrical designs can be modified in order to
prevent the occurrence of insulation breakdown experienced by the dielectrics as described in (a).
EEPB463 High Voltage Technology

A third high voltage system comprising two planar electrodes is shown in Figure 1.1. Similar to the
aforementioned systems, the voltage difference between the two electrodes is measured to be 85 kV
but their separation is fixed at 10 mm.

(c) By redrawing the two electrodes illustrated in Figure 1.1, sketch the electric field lines between
them.

(d) If the field enhancement factor for this system is estimated to be 5.5, evaluate the suitability of
using the materials listed in Table 1.1 to insulate the region between the two electrodes.
