Question 01: (15 pts)

The daily sales of boba tea in CoffeeStory is given as below:

Day Sales (cups)

1 28
2 28
3 34
4 44
5 45
6 38
7 26
8 46

Use the given data to answer questions below:

a) What is the average number of boba tea cup CoffeeStory can sell during 14 days (2.5 pts)
b) Treat the above data as a sample, calculate the variance of boba tea sales (2.5 pts)
c) Calculate the median, first and third quartile of the data set (5 pts)
d) Given that at random days, the sales are 25, and 39 cups. Which percentile these data value belong to? (5
pts)

Question 02: (15 pts)

Hikaru and Akira are two best friends who play GO chess at different school. Unfortunately their schools have to
battle each other in a GO chess tournament in a team match. Hikaru’s school has total 7 players, while Akira’s
school has total 11 players. Each school will form a team of 3 players by selecting randomly, then the chosen
players will be paired randomly to play against each other.
a) What is the probability Hikaru and Akira will play against each other? (5 pts)
b) What is the probability that Hikaru and Akira got chosen into the team, but will not play against each other?
(5 pts)
c) What is the probability that both of them are not selected into the team? (5 pts)
Question 03: (10 pts)
Russian roulette is a game in which players will take turn insert one bullet into a six-cylinder revolver, spin it and
shoot themselves in the head. If he/she fails (it means he/she survives), the second player will repeat the action. The
game ends whenever a player succeeds in shooting himself/herself dead. Assuming we have three players called
Annie, Betty, and Christian are participating in the game, the order of shooting would be Annie, Betty, Christian,
then back to Annie, Betty, Christian, and so on until the game ends. Calculate, for each player, the probability a
player will shoot himself/herself.

Question 04: (10 pts)

Manchester United, Chelsea, and Manchester City are three English football teams that are qualified for the quarter
finals (Quarter finals mean 8 participants) of Champions League this year. UEFA will organize a draw event to
identify the matches. There is no restriction in drawing, and drawing is done randomly. What is the probability that
all three English football teams will avoid each other for this Quarter finals round?

Question 05: (10 pts)

The lifetime of device A can be modelled by an exponential distribution with mean 60 days.
a) If device A is operated alone, what is the probability that it will survive at least 65 days? (5 pts)
b) Now we have device B and C, with lifetime also follows exponential distribution with mean 50 days, and
55 days, respectively. Suppose they are connected together to create a system like this:

A B C

By connecting this way, the system only works if all three devices work, and it will fail when any of these
three devices fails. What is the probability the system will survive at least 52 days? (5 pts)

Question 06: (10 pts)

An oil explorer performs a seismic test to determine whether oil is likely to be found in a certain area. The
probability that the test indicates the presence of oil is 92% if oil is indeed present in the test area and the
probability of a false positive is 6% if no oil is present in the test area. Before the test is done, the explorer believes
that the probability of presence of oil in the test area is 36%. Given that the test result says that there is oil in the
area, what is the probability that the result is false?

Question 07: (10 pts)

Alucard is a vampire hunter, and is known to have very stable shooting skill. The probability of hitting (and killing)
his target is constantly stays at 0.89. Each shot he makes is considered independent to each other.
a) Suppose that he is facing a vampire group of 15, what is the probability he can hit at least 12 of them by
shooting 15 bullets, each bullet aiming to an individual vampire. (5 pts)
b) Suppose now thing goes sour, Alucard has to face a countless number of vampires. The strategy would be
trying to kill some of them then running away as fast as possible. Given that he will stop shooting if he

Question 08: (20 pts)
Vuvuzola is a businessman trying to create a mutual fund to support students’ project. He encourages student to put
money into an account then use it to invest somewhere else to get the profit, then give it back to the students. The
annual profit return is known to follow Normal distribution with mean $322, and variance of $256.
a) What is the probability of a random student will receive a profit larger than $350? (5 pts)
b) Suppose that we have a group of 12 students joining, what is the probability that their average profit will
larger than $325 but smaller than $330 (10 pts)
c) If a student’s profit is from $315 - $329, he/she will be listed as a “successful” investor. Suppose we have a
group of 20 students joining the fund, what is the probability that we have at least 15 “successful”
investors? (5 pts)
