TNPSC BITS
❖ World Vape Day is celebrated on May 30th to raising awareness about the
potential benefits of vaping as a harm reduction tool for smokers.
❖ Prime Minister flagged off Assam's first Vande Bharat Express which connects
Guwahati in Assam and Jalpaiguri in West Bengal.
❖ The Second meeting of the G20 Anti–corruption Working Group recently held in
Rishikesh.
❖ Telangana State has achieved 100 percent household coverage of banking
services extending them to all sections of people through Prime Minister Jan
Dhan Yojana.
❖ Mukesh Ambani has been appointed as a member of the Advisory Committee to
the President of the 28th Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP28) to

build the X-Ray Polarimeter Satellite (XPoSat).
o This will be the India's first, and only the world's second polarimetry mission.

NATIONAL
AISHE Survey 2020-21
❖ The AISHE Survey 2020-21 conducted under the Ministry of Education.
❖ The enrolment of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward
Classes (OBC) in higher education improved by 4.2%, 11.9% and 4%,
respectively.
❖ The Muslim community’s enrolment declined by 8%.
❖ The most drastic decline was reported from Uttar Pradesh (36%), followed by
Jammu and Kashmir (26%), Maharashtra (8.5%) and Tamil Nadu (8.1%).
❖ Kerala is the only State where 43% Muslims go for higher education.
❖ OBC community accounts for 36% of the total enrolment in higher education in
the country.
❖ The SCs bring up another 14%.

❖ The two communities cover nearly 50% of the seats in universities and colleges.
❖ The Muslim community population stands at over 14% but witness only 4.6%
higher education enrolment.
❖ At an all-India level, teachers belonging to the General Category account for 56%
of all teachers.
❖ OBC, SC and ST teachers make up another 32%, 9% and 2.5% of the teachers,
respectively.
❖ Muslims constitute only about 5.6% of the teachers.
❖ In terms of gender, there are 75 female teachers for 100 male teachers.
❖ There are 71% female OBC teachers and 75% female ST teachers, but only 59
female Muslim teachers for every 100 male Muslim teachers.

Foucault’s Pendulum
❖ The National Council of Science Museums (NCSM) based in Kolkata was installed
the Foucault's Pendulum in new Parliament building.
❖ The pendulum takes precisely 49 hours, 59 minutes, and 18 seconds to complete
a full rotation.
❖ It is a deceptively simple device used to illustrate the earth’s rotation.
❖ If the pendulum is installed at the North Pole, the pendulum will basically be
swinging as the earth rotates ‘below’.
❖ If the pendulum is installed over the equator, the plane won’t appear to shift at
all because it will be rotating along with the earth.

❖ Depending on where you are on Earth, the pendulum will appear to rotate in
different ways.

INTERNATIONAL
Health for All – WHO

❖ ‘Health for All: Transforming economies to deliver what matters’ report was
launched by WHO.
❖ This is a roadmap to focus on the links between health and sustainable, inclusive
and innovation-led economic growth.

❖ The report is the first of its kind.


❖ The report recommended policy approaches underpinned by this new economic
narrative.
❖ It has recommended reorienting economies to deliver health for all across four
interrelated themes viz. Value, Value, Innovation and Innovation.

ENVIRONMENT
Gomphonema rajaguruii
❖ Researchers have discovered a new species of single-cell algae, known as
diatoms, from the northern Western Ghats.
❖ It is named after a veteran geo-archaeologist, the late Professor S N Rajaguru as
Gomphonema rajaguruii.
❖ It was found in a semi-aquatic environment along the wet walls of Maharashtra’s
hill station, Mahabaleshwar.
❖ It exhibits traits of two genera, Gomphoema and Gomphoneis, making it a
noteworthy addition to diatom taxonomy.
❖ Diatoms play a crucial role in the ecosystem by supplying oxygen to the
atmosphere through photosynthesis.

Global Slavery Index 2023
❖ The Rights group ‘Walk Free Foundation’ released the Global Slavery Index 2023.

❖ This is an assessment of modern slavery conditions in 160 countries.


❖ It shows that 50 million people were living in conditions of modern slavery on any
given day in 2021.
❖ The Group of 20 nations are contributing to this increase, as their trade
operations and global supply chains allow for human rights abuses.
❖ Among the G20 nations, India tops the list with 11 million people working as
forced labourers.
❖ It is followed by China, Russia, Indonesia, Turkey and the U.S.

PERSONALITIES, AWARDS, AND EVENTS


External Auditor of WHO

❖ Girish Chandra Murmu, the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG), has
been re-elected as the External Auditor of the WHO for a four-year term from
2024 to 2027.

❖ Besides the WHO, the CAG of India is currently the External Auditor of the Food
and Agriculture Organisation (2020-2025), International Atomic Energy Agency
(2022-2027), Organization for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (2021-2023) and
Inter Parliamentary Union (2020-2022).
❖ The CAG is a Member of the United Nations Panel of External Auditors.
❖ He is also a member of the Governing Boards of International Organisation of
Supreme Audit Institutions and ASOSAI.

SPORTS
Highest dismissals in T20 cricket

❖ Mahendra Singh Dhoni became the first Indian and only second cricketer to effect
300 dismissals (catches and stumpings) in T20 cricket.
❖ Dhoni has a total of 301 dismissals including 214 catches and 89 stumpings.

❖ Kieron Pollard has taken 345 catches in T20 cricket.


❖ Dinesh Karthik has a total of 276 dismissals including 207 catches and 69
stumpings.
❖ Dhoni also became the first player to feature in 250 IPL matches during the
match.

IMPORTANT DAYS
Goa Statehood Day - May 30

❖ Goa got its statehood on May 30, 1987.


❖ It was a Portuguese territory since Alfonso de Albuquerque conquered it in 1510
by defeating Adil Shah of Bijapur.
❖ 400 years later, India took back Goa from the Portuguese.
❖ The Indian Army invaded Goa in December 1961 under “Operation Vijay" to
liberate it from the Portuguese.
❖ The annexation by the Indian Army began on December 17, 1961.

World Milk Day - June 01


❖ This day aims to recognize the significance of milk as a universal food.

❖ The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations created the
day in 2001.


