ABSTRACT
Cloud storage is a cloud computing model in which data is stored on remote servers
accessed from the internet, or "cloud." It is maintained, operated and managed by a cloud storage
service provider on storage servers that are built on virtualization techniques. Cloud storage is also
known as utility storage – a term subject to differentiation based on actual implementation and
service delivery. Cloud storage works through data center virtualization, providing end users and
applications with a virtual storage architecture that is scalable according to application
requirements. In general, cloud storage operates through a web-based API that is remotely
implemented through its interaction with the client application's in-house cloud storage
infrastructure for input/output (I/O) and read/write (R/W) operations. There are three main cloud
storage models: Public cloud storage services, Private cloud storage services and Hybrid cloud
storage. Cloud storage has many advantages for both individuals and businesses. Though there are
some downsides, the benefits of cloud storage far outweigh them, and this is most evident by the
rapid pace at which everyone is moving their data to the cloud.

CHAPTER-1
INTRODUCTION
Cloud Storage is a model of data storage in which the digital data is stored in logical
pools, the physical storage spans multiple servers (and often locations), and the physical
environment is typically owned and managed by a hosting company. These cloud storage
providers are responsible for keeping the data available and accessible, and the physical
environment protected and running. People and organizations buy or lease storage capacity from
the providers to store user, organization, or application data.
Cloud storage is a service model in which data is maintained, managed, backed
up remotely and made available to users over a network (typically the Internet). Users generally
pay for their cloud data storage on a per-consumption, monthly rate. Although the per-
gigabyte cost has been radically driven down, cloud storage providers have added operating
expenses that can make the technology more expensive than users bargained for. Cloud security
continues to be a concern among users. Providers have tried to deal with those fears by building
security capabilities, such as encryption and authentication, into their services.Cloud storage
services may be accessed through a co-located cloud computer service, a web service application
programming interface (API) or by applications that utilize the API, such as cloud desktop
storage, a cloud storage gateway or Web-based content management systems. The first major
difference between cloud storage and traditional storage means is accessibility. While hard disks
offer local access to information, cloud storage offers unlimited access to data, if the users can
provide the necessary passkeys and if the computer has internet access.Historically speaking,
cloud computing, as a functional computer model, isn’t that new. In fact, the so-called “cloud”
goes all the way back to the ‘70s and ‘80s, when ARPANET and CNET, the predecessors of the
modern Internet were already hinting at what cloud storage was going to become.

1
CHAPTER-2
WHAT IS CLOUD STORAGE?
Cloud storage is a digital storage solution which utilizes multiple servers to store data in
logical pools. The organizations buy the storage capacity from the providers to store user,
organization, or application data.

Figure.2.1:Cloud storage

Working with a cloud storage service has many advantages, as well as disadvantages.
Probably the most obvious advantage that pops into mind is that you won’t need to clutter up
your hard drive with useless information. Furthermore, cloud storage services usually employ
advanced information compression functions, which means greater indexing capability. This, in
turn, translates to faster search speeds. However, using a cloud storage service is not without
disadvantages. Being a hosting entity, the cloud relies heavily on Internet connection speed.
Cloud computing is an on-demand computing model which relies on a stable Internet connection
to share and access data across multiple devices such as computers or smartphones. Cloud
computing allows users to access all the information stored in a third-party data center. This is
achieved using minimal resources and minimal supervision

CHAPTER-3

FEATURES OF CLOUD STORAGE

Many of these services are free up to a certain number of gigabytes, with additional
storage available for a monthly fee. All cloud storage services provide drag‐and‐drop accessing
and syncing of folders and files between your desktop and mobile devices, and the cloud
drive. They also all allow account users to collaborate with each other on documents.Cloud
storage providers offer a number of features and capabilities in order to make their customers
experience both reliable and efficient. Some of the most important features include:

Automatic Backups

Automatic backups offer the convenience of configuring backup jobs to occur based on a
preset time and date. The feature alleviates the need for the user to have to remember to
manually run the job. Once the feature is configured, you can rest assured that a copy of your
data will be stored on your online account. In the event that you shut down your computer in the
middle of a backup job, it will automatically resume once the computer is powered back on.

Incremental Backups

A feature that ensures only files which were modified, or newly created, since the last
backup are saved to your cloud storage. The feature is important in that it is efficient, quick, and
saves precious space from getting eaten up by duplicate documents.

3
File Archiving

Without this feature, older files are automatically deleted and replaced by their newer
versions. File archiving preserves older versions so that, if needed, they can be accessed.
Regardless of the number of previous versions, file archiving will keep a copy of each.

Open File Backup

Unexpected events such as power outage or hard drive failure, to name just a couple, can
take place while you’re in the middle of working on a document. The open file backup feature
ensures that even open documents are backed up.

Remote Access

A feature that allows you to access stored files from any computer whenever the need
arises. All that’s required are the login details for your cloud storage account. This feature comes
in very handy for those who are frequently on the move and may need to access files while on a
flight, in a meeting or simply out of the office.

File security

This is a must-have feature. Providers of secure online backups encrypt files during both
transfer and storage; otherwise, your data is liable to be intercepted and read by malevolent
parties. Most cloud storage companies use SSL and 256-bit AES encryption.

File Sharing

The file sharing feature gives the ability for multiple users to access files, on your online
account, from wherever they may be. The feature is especially useful for those who need friends,
family or co-workers to be able to view some or all files stored on the access files.

CLOUD STORAGE ARCHITECTURE

Cloud storage is based on highly virtualized infrastructure and is like broader cloud
computing in terms of accessible interfaces, near-instant elasticity and scalability, multi-tenancy,
and metered resources. Cloud storage services can be utilized from an off-premises service or
deployed on-premises.

Figure.2: Cloud storage architecture

5
CHAPTER-5

TYPES OF CLOUD STORAGE

There are four types of Cloud-Storage as detailed below:

Personal Cloud Storage

 It is a subset of public cloud-storage that stores individual’s data in the cloud and
provides the individual with access to the data from anywhere.

 It also provides data syncing and data sharing across multiple devices. An example of
personal cloud-storage is Apple iCloud.

Public Cloud Storage

 Public cloud storage services provide a multi-tenant storage environment that is most
suited for unstructured data. Data is stored in global data centers with storage data spread
across multiple regions or continents. Customers generally pay on a per-use basis similar
to the utility payment model. This market sector is dominated by Amazon Simple Storage
Service (S3), Amazon Glacier for cold storage, Google Cloud Storage, Google Cloud
Storage Nearline for cold data and Microsoft Azure

 It is where the enterprise and storage service provider are separate and there aren’t any
cloud resources stored in the enterprise’s data center. The cloud-storage provider fully
manages enterprise’s public cloud storage.

 With public cloud, you won’t need to concern about maintenance or data security, since
all the data is externalized. Public clouds are easier to access and maintain than private
clouds.

 Furthermore, anyone having the right credentials can submit access to the cloud, from
either a computer terminal connected to the Internet or from other devices such as a tablet
or a smartphon
6
Private Cloud Storage
 The enterprise and cloud-storage provider are integrated in the enterprise’s data center.
Private cloud storage helps in resolving the potential for security and performance
concerns while still offering the advantages of cloud-storage.

 Private cloud, or on-premises, storage services provide a dedicated environment

protected behind an organization's firewall. Private clouds are appropriate for users who
need customization and more control over their data.

 Private clouds are tailored to accommodate and handle data requests from small home-
based companies or larger companies. Typically, this type of cloud service is the best
solution for a company that wants to migrate all data by employing the services of a
third-party cloud provider.

 Alternately, cloud service clients can opt for two types of private clouds. An on-premise
cloud uses a server or a machine that can be found in the same building. This server hosts
the cloud. The other option is externally-hosted cloud storage. The host server is not in
the same building as the company.

 On-premise private clouds are easier to supervise. The machine that handles all the
requests is in the same building as the company. Thus, the staff can easily check if
something goes wrong. However, keep in mind that this type of service is better suited
for bigger companies. For smaller businesses, it may be a bit pricey, as the maintenance
costs can be quite high.

7
Hybrid Cloud Storage
 It is a combination of public and private cloud-storage where critical data are stored in
enterprise’s private cloud while other data is stored in public cloud.Hybrid cloud is a mix
of private cloud and third-party public cloud services with orchestration between the
platforms for management. The model offers businesses flexibility and more data
deployment options. An organization might, for example, store actively used and
structured data in an on-premises cloud, and unstructured and archival data in a public
cloud. In recent years, a greater number of customers have adopted the hybrid cloud
model. Despite its benefits, a hybrid cloud presents technical, business and management
challenges. For example, private workloads must access and interact with public cloud
storage providers, so compatibility and solid network connectivity are very important
factors. An enterprise-level cloud storage system should be scalable to suit current needs,
accessible from anywhere and application-agnostic.

 A hybrid cloud combines some of the features of private and public clouds. One of the
greatest advantages of using hybrid clouds is the greater number of customization
options. You can add, delete or edit the current applications running on your cloud.

 If you wish to share sensitive information, you can always opt for the private cloud
feature with better security. Alternately, you can migrate some of your non-sensitive data
on the public side of the cloud.

8
CHAPTER-6
CLOUD STORAGE PROVIDERS
Consumers and businesses continue to reduce their need to rely on local storage by
placing files and applications in the cloud. One has to choose a provider who will offer the
maximum amount of low-cost storage and bandwidth, while still keeping your data safe.

Figure.3:Cloud storage providers

Free Cloud Storage

These services sync folders on your computer or mobile device to folders on other
machines or into the cloud, allowing users to work from a folder or directory across devices.
Typically these services have tiered pricing, meaning you pay for the amount of data you
store with the service, or for tiers of data that you are allowed to use. If there is data loss,
sometimes these services even have a version history feature.

9
Below are the some examples of free cloud storage,

Google Drive
 Google is one of the giants in cloud-storage.

 It offers:Free Data Storage up to 15GB ,Backup and Sync Desktop App and G Suit Tools
.

Figure.4:Google Drive

10
One Drive

 One Drive is particularly for Microsoft Windows users. It allows 5GB of free data
storage. It has a great integration with Microsoft products. The files can be edited without
downloading. File sharing in One Drive is possible with other users even if they aren’t
One Drive users.

Figure.5:One Drive

11
Dropbox

 It has a great storage support for third-party apps with web interface that remains
streamlined and easy-to-use.

Figure.6:Dropbox
 Dropbox has 2GB of storage space for new users. However there are other ways for
boosting this space without paying, such as inviting friends (500MB for referral),
completing getting started guide (250MB), etc.

 There are desktop apps for Windows, Linux and Mac, and mobile apps including
Android, iOS and even Kindle.

 The web version lets you edit files without the need of downloading them

12
Business Cloud Storage
Cloud storage is a way for businesses and consumers to save data securely online
so it can be accessed anytime from any location and easily shared with those who are
granted permission.

The examples of Business Cloud-Storage are as follows:

Spider Oak
 Founded in 2007, Spider Oak is a collaboration tool, file hosting and online backup
service. It allows users to access, synchronize and share data using a cloud-based server.

Figure.7:Spider Oak

 The main focus in Spider Oak is on privacy and security. The tool has a very basic design
which makes the admin console and all central device management very straightforward
to use. It also includes drag and drop feature for organizing files.

13
Tresorit
 Founded in 2011,Tresorit is a cloud storage provider based in Hungary and Switzerland.
It emphasizes on enhanced security and data encryption for businesses and personal
users.

Figure.8:tresorit

Egnyte
 Founded in 2007,Egnyte provides software for enterprise file synchronization and
sharing. It allows businesses to store their data locally and online.

Figure.9:Egnyte

 It integrates with applications such as Office 365. This allows both remote and internal
employees to access the files with ease.

14
CHAPTER-7
RISKS OF CLOUD STORAGE

I don’t think cloud storage is an infallible service. Along with the benefits, they come
with a few risks as well. It’s totally upon you to shortlist the service providers that properly
serves your purposes. Otherwise, you may face some risks in the process of backup. Let’s look at
the flip side of a cloud storage system. Requires high speed internet connection most of the time

 Data is stored on third party servers

 When a provider closes its service for maintenance, you may find it

 troublesome to access your data If your provider closes its service permanently, you may lose
you valuable

 data Premium services cost you a considerable amount for the storage volume

 Most of the cloud storage service providers offer a free plan that intends to serve your common
needs. In case of dealing with a huge pile of files or business essentials, cloud storage can be a
reasonable way for securing your data in the cloud.

15
CHAPTER-8
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

Advantages of Cloud Storage

 Usability: All cloud storage services reviewed in this topic have desktop folders for
Mac’s and PC’s. This allows users to drag and drop files between the cloud storage and
their local storage.
 Bandwidth: You can avoid emailing files to individuals and instead send a web link to
recipients through your email.
 Accessibility: Stored files can be accessed from anywhere via Internet connection.
 Disaster Recovery: It is highly recommended that businesses have an emergency backup
plan ready in the case of an emergency. Cloud storage can be used as a back‐up plan by
businesses by providing a second copy of important files. These files are stored at a
remote location and can be accessed through an internet connection.
 Cost Savings: Businesses and organizations can often reduce annual operating costs by
using cloud storage; cloud storage costs about 3 cents per gigabyte to store data
internally. Users can see additional cost savings because it does not require internal
power to store information remotely

16
Disadvantages of Cloud Storage
 Usability: Be careful when using drag/drop to move a document into the cloud storage
folder. This will permanently move your document from its original folder to the cloud
storage location. Do a copy and paste instead of drag/drop if you want to retain the
document’s original location in addition to moving a copy onto the cloud storage folder.
 Bandwidth: Several cloud storage services have a specific bandwidth allowance. If an
organization surpasses the given allowance, the additional charges could be significant.
However, some providers allow unlimited bandwidth. This is a factor that companies
should consider when looking at a cloud storage provider.
 Accessibility: If you have no internet connection, you have no access to your data.
 Data Security: There are concerns with the safety and privacy of important data stored
remotely. The possibility of private data commingling with other organizations makes
somebusinesses uneasy. If you want to know more about those issues that govern data
security and privacy, here is an interesting article on the recent privacy debates.

17
CHAPTER-9
CONCLUSION

Many of the activities loosely grouped together under cloud computing have already been
happening and centralised computing activity is not a new phenomenaGrid Computing was
the last research-led centralised approachHowever there are concerns that the mainstream
adoption of cloud computing could cause many problems for usersMany new open source
systems appearing that you can install and run on your local cluster.Despite concerns about
the security of cloud storage, many businesses see that the cost savings, accessibility and
disaster recovery are more valuable than the associated risks. Cloud storage is certainly here
to stay for some time and worth considering for your company’s infrastructure and budget.
