Smartphone:
 A term given to a category of modern smartphones
 Use an advanced operating system
 Most of them use a touch screen
 A user interface and run multiple applications that are
not related to the function of the phone only
 The smartphones is a necessity for many people
around the world.
 It is small in size and does not need to be connected to
a source of electricity, so it can be carried easily.
The available options:
 Ability to keep in touch with family and business
partners.
 Browse the Internet, send and receive files.
 Email access.
 Storing data and files.
 Photo and video capture.
 Track the location on maps and locate the appropriate
route.
 Ability to download specialized applications such as
news applications, health applications, music
applications, and others.
The history of mobile phones:
 Portable communications devices that connect
wirelessly to the public telephone network as far back
as 1908 when the US patent was issued in Kentucky
for a wireless phone.
 Cell phones were invented as early as the 1940's by
engineers working at AT&T when they developed
Cells for mobile phone terminals. The early mobile
phones were not cell phones at all. They were two-
way radios that allowed people such as taxi drivers
and emergency services to call; rather than relying on
stations containing separate cells (and the signal
traveled from cell to cell)
 A company Motorola on April 3, 1973 was the first
company to produce the first handheld mobile phone.
These early cell phones are often referred to as cell
phones.
The Smartphone components:
1. A cache and random CPU:
 Smartphones have central processing units (CPUs),
similar to those found in computers,
 but optimized for working in low-power
environments.
2. Rechargeable battery:
 Provides the power source for the phone functions.
 Previously, smartphone battery life was poor due to
weak batteries that couldn't handle the high-power
requirements of computer systems, smartphones and
color screens
 But overall battery performance improved.
 They use auxiliary portable Power Bank external
chargers for outdoor use and at work.
3. LCD touch screen:
 One of the main characteristics of smartphones is the
screen. Depending on the device's design, the screen
fills most of the front surface area of the device.
 The aspect ratio for smart display is 16 : 9, but longer
aspect ratios became more popular in 2017.
 Screen sizes are measured in diagonal inches.
 Smartphones with screens larger than 4.5 inches are
usually difficult to use with only one hand, as most
thumbs cannot reach the entire surface of the screen.
 Liquid crystal displays are the most common. Others
offer IPS, LED, OLED, and AMOLED display.
4. Loudspeaker:
 Cell phones usually contain small speakers so that the
user can use the speakerphone feature and talk to a
person on the phone without fixing it in his ear
 and also to listen to digital audio files for music or
video
5. Devices connecting to mobile networks and other
networks such as Wi-Fi - Bluetooth – NFC.
6. Sensors such as GPS positioning
7. Factory applications such as clock, alarm, calendar,
contacts, calculator, and some games.
8. Camera capabilities: When determining the quality of
the camera, you do not only care about accuracy, but
also pay attention to another set of criteria such as the
aperture ‫ فتحة‬and the speed of capturing images.
9. Storage space:
 Avoid smartphones with a storage capacity of 16 GB,
and instead move towards the option of 32 GB of
storage capacity that suits most people within the
limits of average use.
 As for the random memory (R), it is better that it
should not be less than 2 GB.
10. The battery: preferable battery capacity of at least
3000 mAh
11. Processor power: choose advanced processors in
Android phones, such as the Qualcomm Snapdragon
835 processor.
Cell phone
 A phone may be mobile, but it cannot be classified as a
smart phone.
 It is usually called a cell phone, as these classic phones are
only used for making calls and text messages only.
 These phones have less advanced features and generally
focus on ease of use.
 It is inexpensive compared to smartphones.
Smart phone
 Considered a type of the family of smart devices, which are
devices that perform a basic function through advanced
operating systems.
 Allow downloading and using other applications to perform
additional functions according to the user's need.
 Usually, these devices contain a processor, storage and
wireless means of communication to run such applications.
 A smartphone is an integrated computer with tangible
components, an operating system, and applications.
 The type of smartphone can be divided according to the
manufacturer of its components or according to the
operating system.
 There are many manufacturers of smartphones
The most famous of them are:
1. Apple and its famous device, IPhone 6,7, X
2. SAMSUNG in various versions, Galaxy, Note
3. Huawei with its various releases: Y7, Mate 20, P20 Pro,
Nova
4. Many other companies such as oppo - LG - Motorola –
Nokia.
 Smartphones need operating systems for mobile phones as
they act as a platform through which applications can
interact with smartphone components such as the touch
screen, mobile phone networks, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, and
others.
 There are several operating systems for smartphones, the
most important of which is Android, iOS and Windows 10.
A. The Android Operating System

the "candy-inspired" version names (Cupcake, Donut,
Eclair, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, and Ice Cream
Sandwich)
B. BlackBerry OS (RIM):
 It is operating system of BlackBerry.
 The BlackBerry platform was very corporate users as
it provided synchronization with Microsoft Exchange,
Lotus Domino, Novell GroupWise email and other
business software
C. iOS (Apple):
 OS supports a number of Apple devices including the
iPhone, iPad, iPad 2 and iPod Touch.
 The iOS mobile operating system is only available on
Apple devices, because the company does not license
the operating system for devices made by other
companies.
 Apple iOS is derived from Apple's Mac OS X operating
system.
D. Windows Mobile (Windows Phone):
 It is Microsoft's mobile operating system used in
smartphones and mobile devices - with or without
touchscreens.
 Mobile OS is based on the Windows CE 5.2 kernel. In
2010,
 Microsoft announced a new smartphone platform
called Windows Phone 7.
Different types of smart devices
 A smart device is an electronic device,
 Generally connected to other devices or networks via
different protocols such as Bluetooth, NFC, Wi-Fi, 3G,

sees.
 Wearable computer glasses (smart glasses) that are
able to change their optical properties at runtime.
What is Mobile Application?
 A computer program or software application designed
to run on a mobile device such as a phone, tablet, or
watch.
 Originally intended for productivity assistance such as
email, calendar, and contact databases, but the public
demand for it caused rapid expansion into other areas
such as mobile games, factory automation, GPS.
 There are now millions of Apps.
 They are downloaded from application distribution
platforms which are operated by the owner of the
mobile operating system, such as the App Store (iOS)
or Google Play Store
 Some of them are free, and others have a price, with
the profit being split between the application's
creator and the distribution platform.

How mobile Application are built?

 By programming the smartphone using its platform’s
native programming language.
 Today, an intermediary language such as JavaScript
can be used to build up an App.
 Then this code is exported to create an App. for both
Android and iOS, instead of building each
independently at much greater costs.
1. Native Apps:
 built specifically for a mobile operating system such as
Apple iOS, Android or Windows phone.
 They are usually built by a developer in the specific
