Assignment 1
Assignment 1
Question 1. (30 marks) The length of crank of a slider-crank mechanism (see Fig 1.) is 0.3 m
and of connecting rod is 1.25 m. The diameters of the journals at the crosshead,
the crankpin, and the crankshaft are 0.080 m, 0.120 m, and 0.140 m respectively.
The pressure on the piston (diameter of 0.250 m) is 400 kN/m2 . Find the reduction
in the turning moment available at the crankshaft due to friction of the crosshead
guides and the journals when the crank has rotated 50◦ from the inner-dead centre.
Consider coefficient of friction between the crosshead and the guide to be 0.06 and
for journals to be 0.05. Draw all the necessary figures and free body diagrams
neatly. Also, state all the assumptions and considerations.
Question 2. (50 marks) Figure 2 shows a twin-cylinder engine mechanism. The links OA
and BD are inclined at 30◦ and 45◦ with the horizontal, respectively. The length
of the links OA, AB, BD, AC, BC are 0.16 m, 0.1 m, 0.2 m, 0.24m, and 0.2 m,
respectively. The link OA rotates at a constant angular velocity ωOA = 20 rps
(CCW). The centre of gravities of link OA and BD are at the midpoints of the
link. The centre of gravity of link ABC is 0.08 m from AB and 0.02 m from AC.
The sliders at C and D are acted upon by forces F6 = 1437 N and F5 = 2964
N, respectively.. The mass of links ○,
2 ○,3 ○, 4 ○,
5 and ○ 6 are 9, 8, 5, 6, and 6
1
kg, respectively. The mass moments of inertia of the links ○, 2 ○,
3 ○, 4 ○,5 and ○ 6
about their centre of gravities are are 785.6 kg cm2 , 589.2 kg cm2 , 2209.5 kg cm2 ,
2946 kg cm2 , and 2946 kg cm2 , respectively..
a. Draw the velocity diagram and find all the required absolute and relative
velocities from it. Write in stepwise manner how you have drawn the diagram.
b. Draw the acceleration diagram and find all the required the absolute and
relative accelerations from it. Write in stepwise manner how you have drawn
the diagram.
c. Find the magnitude of the inertia forces on each link.
d. Draw the force (equilibrium) diagram for each link and determine the forces
acting on the link.
e. Find the load acting on the main bearing, crank pins at A, B, C, and D.
f. Find the reactive forces acting on the inner walls of the cylinders.
g. Find the couple required on link 2 for dynamic equilibrium.
Question 3. (15 marks) Consider the slider-crank mechanism where the crank (of length r)
has rotated by an angle θ from the inner dead centre. The connecting rod of length
` is inclined at an angle β with the horizontal. The slider is acted upon by a force
F . Derive the expression for the
2
d. acceleration αc of the connecting rod,
e. effective driving force F of the piston when the friction force is Ff ,
f. thrust Fc along the length on the connecting rod,
g. normal reaction Fn on the cylinder walls,
h. crank effort Ft ,
i. thrust on the bearings Fr ,
j. turning moment T on the crankshaft,
k. resisting torque Tr , and
l. accelerating torque Ta .
Question 4. (5 marks) Consider the slider-crank mechanism where the crank (of length r) has
rotated by an angle θ from the inner dead centre. The connecting rod of mass m
and length ` is inclined at an angle β with the horizontal. Now in the class, for
creating the dynamically equivalent system for a piston the masses where lumped
at the gudgeon (piston) pin B and another point along the connecting rod (length
`). Now suppose if the mass of the connecting rod is lumped at the gudgeon
(piston) pin (distance b from centre of gravity) and the crank pin A (distance a
from centre of gravity), respectively. Let the masses be mb and ma with radius
of gyration of connecting rod be K and its angular acceleration be α. Then, due
to this the inertia torque is increased from the actual value T = Iαc . For this a
correction couple Tc is to be applied in the direction opposite direction to that of
the applied torque. This is produced by two equal, parallel, and opposite forces Fy
acting at the gudgeon pin and crankpin perpendicular to the line of stroke. Find
the expression for this correction couple Tc . Clearly state any assumption that you
will take.
