TOPIC 1: NONLINEAR TEXTS AND INTERPRETATION

Nonlinear texts refer to the information presented in tables, graphs, and charts. Using them is
beneficial since an audience or a reader develops his ability to interpret and comprehend
messages critically.
The process of adding meaning using textual explanations to the presented data by making
connections and comparisons is called interpretation.

PRINCIPLES OF INTERPRETING DATA

1. Define first what the graph is about; that is, the date, location, what is being described in
the graph.
2. Describe the graph in detail. Present data in a clear and a logical order.
3. Avoid repetition. Use a range of structures and vocabulary correctly.
4. Describe trends or changes or movements using correct verbs. There are three basic
trends (upward, downward, stable trends).
5. Describe the movement using adjectives and adverbs. Use adjectives like dramatic,
sharp, huge, enormous, steep, moderate, slight, small, and minimal. Use adverbs like
rapidly, quickly, swiftly, suddenly, steadily, gradually, and slowly.
6. The interpretation may end with one or two sentences which summarize the data and
draw a relevant conclusion.

The line graph shows the confirmed cases of Coronavirus in Pampanga from June 5-25,
2020. The number of confirmed cases in the province on June 5 was 107, remained stable
on June 10, went up to 109 on June 15, increased to 112 on June 20, and climbed to 122
on June 25.
In conclusion, the graph reveals that the number of cases continues to gradually
increase over time and that Kapampangans should still support efforts to combat the
pandemic.

Take note of these guidelines in writing the interpretation of a non-linear text.

Make sure also that you check the grammar of your output because it is graded.

“I have faced several challenges on my way here, but each one of them
has only strengthened me to make me the person I am today. Winning
this award would not have been possible without the inspiration I have
received from my seniors and my colleagues, for whom I have the
deepest respect, and from whom I have derived the strength to
challenge myself and perform better at each stage.” (Source: Social Mettle,
n.d.)
“Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. It’s a great pleasure for me to
introduce our speaker today, who is going to talk to us about the ten
most common personal financial planning mistakes. He is an award-
winning professional accountant who has specialized in personal
finances and taxation for over twenty years and has guided the
financial affairs of some of this country’s best-known athletes,
entertainers, entrepreneurs, and executives. Ladies and gentlemen,
please join me in welcoming home, Steve Robbins!” (Source: Club Runner,

“But how much more are you, Harvard graduates of 2008, likely to
touch other people’s lives? Your intelligence, your capacity for hard
work, and the education you have earned and received give you unique
status and unique responsibilities. Even your nationality sets you
apart. The great majority of you belong to the world’s only remaining
superpower. The way you vote, the way you live, the way you protest,
the pressure you bring to bear on your government have an impact
way beyond your borders.”

many good and bad moments; however, all have given us new

working in a happy environment brings more positive results.
However, who will make the working environment happy after you, we
