Contemporary art in the Philippines emerged in reaction to the social and political realities of the 1970s under Ferdinand Marcos' martial law. Marcos sought to control art and culture to promote his vision of a pre-colonial lost civilization. This led many artists to use social realism to oppose the regime and expose the conditions of poverty and oppression. The end of martial law in 1986 after the People Power Revolution marked the beginning of the contemporary period in Philippine art, as free expression was restored.
