PEA210:QUANTITATIVE APTITUDE AND DATA INTERPRETATION

Course Outcomes: Through this course students should be able to

CO1 :: apply the shortcuts for solving the questions of number system, average and percentage

CO2 :: use mathematical concepts learned to solve problems of profit loss, interest and ratios

CO3 :: understand the concepts of alligation, time and work and pipes and cistern

CO4 :: learn the analytical techniques of time speed & distance to solve the problems on trains
and boats and stream and races

CO5 :: select an appropriate approach to solve problems related to algebra, geometry and
mensuration
CO6 :: demonstrate procedural fluency with permutations, probability and data interpretation to
solve the stated problems

Unit I
Number system : classification on numbers, divisibility rules, LCM and HCF, factors, unit digit,
remainders
Average : average calculations, average increase and decrease, weighted average

Percentage : fraction based questions, concept of comparison, percentage increase and decrease,
population change in percentage
Unit II
Profit and loss : calculations of profit and loss percentage, types of discount and discount
percentages, comparison of profit or loss with discount percentage, marked price concept
Simple and compound interest : problems based on simple interest, rate computation, time
computation, amount computation, population based questions, depreciation, questions based on
relation between compound and simple interests
Ratio and proportion : ratio and its types, proportion and its types, direct and indirect variations,
problems based on partnerships and profit sharing
Unit III
Mixture and alligation : conceptual knowledge of alligation and mixtures, problems based on
mixtures
Time and work : computation of work done together, efficiency based problems, men, women, and
children based problems, wages based work problems
Pipes and cistern : inlet-outlet based problem, concept of negative work

Unit IV
Speed and distance : conversion of unit, average speed concept, relative speed concept, application
based questions
Problem on trains : concept of relative speed, applications of trains

Boats and streams and races : downstream and upstream speeds, speed of water and stream,
linear and circular track
Unit V
Algebra : operations with algebraic expressions, rules of exponents, solving linear and quadratic
equations
Geometry : coordinate geometry, concepts of circle, concepts of triangle

Mensuration : perimeter and area of two dimensional figures, area and volume of three dimensional
figures
Unit VI
Permutation and combination : basic principle of counting, numerical permutation(formation of
numbers and sum of numbers), alpha permutation(rearrangement of words and rank of a word),
linear and circular permutation
Probability : classification of events, conditional probability, problems based on coins dices and cards

Data interpretation : bar graph, line chart, pie chart, data table, combined graph
