TASK – 5

14. Design and Detailing of Elements

14.1 Slab Design
Continuing from section 11.1, Consider the same slab.
Dimension = 6 m x 3.5 m internal panel
Thickness, D= 150mm,
Consider 8 mm dia bars for reinforcement,
effective depth: d = 150-25-10/2 = 120mm
Fck = 30 N/mm2 and fy = 500 N/mm2

Results from ETABS software:

Max moment at center: Mu1 = 12 kNm

Max moment at support Mu2 = 24 kNm
Mu lim = 0.133 fck bd2 = (0.133x 30x1000x1202 / 106 = 57.5 kNm

Mu < Mu lim
Hence depth provided is sufficient
Check for reinforcement (+ve moments @ midspan)

Main bars:
Substituting the values in above equation pt = 0.17%
Ast = bd pt/100 = 225 mm2

Hence provide 10 mm dia bars at 300 mm c/c

Distribution bars:

Similarly, for the other direction substituting the Mu2 pt = 0.35%

Ast = bd pt/100 = 525 mm2

Hence provide 10 mm dia bars at 150 mm c/c

20
14.2 Beam Design
Basic Data
Consider the beam B74, in 7th floor

Length (span) = 7m = 7000mm

Width: b = 300 mm
Depth: D = 600 mm
Fck = 30 N/mm2
Fy = 500 N/mm2

Force values from ETABS analysis:

Deflection, .max = 4 mm
Max shear force, Vu =167kN
Max moment @ mid: Mu = 213 kNm

21
Max moment @ support: Mu = 137kNm
Effective depth: d =565mm

Main bottom reinforcement (mid span)

Ast = 0.5 fck/fy (1 - (1-4.6 Mu/fck bd2)) bd

= 125mm2

Provide 5 no’s 20 mm dia bars.

Hence pt provided = 0.93%
Top reinforcement (at supports)

Ast = 0.5 fck/fy (1 - (1-4.6 Mu/fck bd2)) bd

= 562mm2

Provide 3 no’s 16 mm dia bars.

Check for reinforcement
Minimum Ast = 0.85 bd/fy = 288 mm2

Maximum Ast = 0.04 bD = 7200 mm2:

Hence reinforcement provided is OK Shear

reinforcement

v = Vu/bd = = 0.88 N/mm2

IS 456: 2000, Cl 40.1 - c max = 3.5 N/mm2 ,

Since v < c max, dimensions of beam are

ok From Table 19: c = 0.685 N/mm2 v > c ,
Hence provide shear reinforcement
Vuc = c bd = 116.11 kN
Vus = Vu - Vuc = 50.89 kN
Provide 8 mm dia 2 legged stirrups
Area = Asv = 100.53mm2

Spacing of Shear reinforcement (Sv)

22
The least value out of the following 4 conditions should be used; C l 26. 1.6

i) : Sv = 485 mm

ii) : Sv = 364 mm
iii) Sv = 0.75 d = 0.75 x 565 = 424 mm iv) Sv = 300 mm
Hence, provide 8mm dia 2 legged stirrups at 300mm c/c spacing as shear reinforcement
Deflection check
The deflection should not exceed l/250 = 5000/250 = 20mm
Or 20 mm, whichever is less, here deflection = 4mm, which is under limit.
Check for torsion
Torsion design shall be done as per Cl. 40 of IS 456: 2000. Since in this case, the torsion value
on the beam is very minimal, its avoided. Development length

s = 500 N/mm2 , bd = 1.5×1.6 = 2.4

= 20mm (from Table 26.2.1.1, IS 456)

L/d =20× 500/ 4×2.4 = 1041mm = 1.1m approx

23
14.3 Column Design for GF
Consider the ground floor column
Height (span) = 3.6 m = 3600 mm
Width: b = 400mm
Depth: D = 600mm
Fck = 40 N/mm2
Fy = 500 N/mm2
Force values from ETABS analysis:
Max axial force, Pu = 4166 kN
Major axis moment, Mu = 115 kNm

Cover provided d’ = 40 mm d’/D =

40/600 = 0.66 = 0.05 approx.

Pu/fck.b. D = 4166×103/40×400 = 0.44

Mu/fck.b. D2 = (115x 106)/ (40 ) = 0.02
From PMM interaction curve of SP 16; Chart 47: pt/fck = 0.02
Pt = 0.02 = 0.8%, Hence provide Ast = 400 /100 = 1920mm2

Provide 8 numbers 20 mm dia bars as main reinforcement

Stirrups dia = Highest of {max/4, 6mm} = 6mm, but due to practical constrains provide 8mm
dia for stirrups.
Stirrups spacing = Least of {D, 16.max, 300mm} = 300 mm.
Hence provide 8mm dia ties @ 300mm c/c spacing

14. Shear wall

Total Height of wall (hw) = 32.5 mm

Length of wall (Lw) =2500.mm

Effective depth of wall, dw eff = 0.8 Lw

Factored BM, Mu = 2318 KN-

As per IS: 13920 – 2016 (Cl – 10.1.2)

1. Section Classification [As per IS: 13920 – 2016 (Cl – 10.1.2)]

= 32500 /2500 =13 > 2

Note: [ < 1 − Squat Wall ,

2 – Slender wall]
Hence it is slender wall.
2. Design of Shear Reinforcement (Horizontal)

Factored shear stress, = 0.69 N/mm2

Where, 0.25 = 0.25 √30 = 1.36

As per IS: 13920 – 2016 (Cl – 10.1.7)

25
If Tv > 0.25 √fck or tw > 200 mm

Then steel will be provided in two curtain/ layer.

(a) Selection of diameter of bars as per IS: 13920 – 2016 (Cl – 10.1.8)
Diameter of bars > = 30 mm,
(b)The maximum spacing of vertical or horizontal reinforcements shall not exceed smaller of,

mm

2. 3 x tw = 3 x 300=900mm

3. 450 mm
Hence maximum spacing = 450 mm.

Tc max = 0.63 √fck = 0.63 = 0.69 N/mm2

ρh min = 0.0025 + 0.5 (

ρh min = 0.0025
Dia. of bar for horizontal reinforcements, taking as T8 mm

Ah = 0.0025x300 x1000= 750 mm2 / m-run (In two layers) Spacing, = 209.43 mm

Providing T8 @ 209.43 mm c/c horizontal bars.

3. Design of Longitudinal Reinforcement (Vertical)

) = 300/2500 = 0.415 %
Now, Tc = 0.45 N/mm2 (As per IS: 456-2000, Table:19)

Tv (0.69 MPa) < Tc max (3.5 MPa) ……No need to revise design

Tv (0.69 MPa) > Tc (0.455 MPa)………Need to design for shear

As per IS 13920 − 2016, Cl. 10.2.3

= 0.165 (Required)

= 0.670 (Provided) > 0.522 (Required)

Hence provided horizontal reinforcement is safe to resist shear. ρv

net 0.415 %

Av = 4.15x 10^-3x 300 x 1000 = 124.5 mm2 (In two layers)

26
Dia. of bar for vertical reinforcements, taking as T12 mm

= 181 mm
Providing T12 @ 200 mm c/c vertical bars, contained within horizontal bars.

4. Check for the necessity of boundary element

Factored Area Load, Pu = 3984 KN

Stress,

fmax = +12.72 MPa fmin

= – 2.1 MPa

As per IS: 13920 – 2016 (Cl – 10.4.1)

flim = 0.2 fck = 0.2 x 30 = 6MPa fmax (

12.72 MPa) > flim (6 MPa)

Now, it is needed to design boundary elements

3.1 Check for flexural strength

Providing boundary element of size 300 x 600. mm
Provided area of vertical reinforcements,

Av = 753.98 mm2/m

Total vertical steel, Av =753.98 x 1.3 = 980 mm2

As per Annex – A (Case – A)

Now,

Since,

So

27
Hence,

On solving above equation, Mu = 3182 KN-m

3.2 Loads in Boundary Elements

Hence, Mu = 2318 KN m > Mu = 3182 KN m (Actual moment acting on shear wall)
No extra moment, hence take only Pu = -864 KN
Fraction of B.E Area= (300 x 600)/ (300 x 2500) = 0.24
Compression or tensile load on B.E by fraction of B.E area = 0.24x 3984 = 956KN
4. Design of Boundary Element (Longitudinal Reinforcements)
As per IS: 13920 – 2016 (Cl – 10.4.2) provide short column (0.8 % Steel)

Ast = 1440 mm2

Pu = 0.4 fck Ac + 0.67 fy Ast

=2189.6 KN > 956.1 KN … OK

Largest Bar Diameter = tw /10 = 300/10 = 30 mm

Provide 6 bars of 16 mm dia. (Asc = 6 x 491 = 2945 mm2)

4.1 Design of Boundary Element (Confinement or lateral reinforcements)

Area of Link Bar,
=201 mm
Maximum spacing = Least of
Therefore,
i) x Minimum dimension of B. E
=100mm
Where h = Larger dimension of link ii) 6 x ф of smallest longitudinal bars
measured from outer face. =6x25= 150 mm iii)
h c = 260 mm 100 mm
b c = 220 mm Providing special confining reinforcement
in B.E as T 10 @ 150 mm c/c throughout
Therefore, h = 260 mm
Using 10 mm dia. Link bar,
