Topic: Exploring numbers up to 100, 000


Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the student should be able to:
a. Visualize numbers up to 100 000
b. Read and write numbers up to 100 000 in symbols and in word
c. Express the given number in expanded form

Activity: Concept note, drill and exercises.

The teacher will let the students play the game called “Last Number Standing with Twist” before discussing the
lesson.

It is important that in reading numbers, you know the place value and value of each digit of the numerals. The
place value chart below may help you to read and understand more about the given numeral.

Take note that ‘’0’’ is an important place holder in a number. It has no value but it holds a place value in a
given number.
You can express the expanded form of a number using the value of the digits in a given number.
Ex. The expanded form of 2579 is 2000 + 500 + 70 + 9

Remember the following:


1. In reading numbers, start with the digits in the highest period; then, read the digits as one number followed
by the names of the periods, except units period.
2. A space or a comma is used to separate the numbers into periods from right to left. Each period has
three digits
3. One can write the expanded form of a number by adding the values of the digits in the given number.

Activity
The students will form a group and play the game “Digits Go “ wherein each member of the group will
hold a digit. The teacher will announce the number then the members of the group will arrange themselves
correctly.
