What did you learn about yourself from the back- to- back drawings, nail on a string challenge, Escape
the Boom and the mock interviews? Share specific examples.
During these activities I have learnt a lot about myself and how good my communication skills are. For
example, when we had to do the back-to-back drawings, I discovered that it can be very difficult for me
to explain directions and communicate good with others verbally and I tried to brainstorm different
ways on how I could make my communication with the other person easier for them to understand.
Another example was for the nail on a string challenge we had to work together as a team to try and get
them to stay during that activity I feel as my communication was a lot better than the drawing one
because we all spoke up if we had an idea on how to make them stay on the string. I had thought of an
idea, and I communicated to my team members and asked if they thought it would work and we gave it
a try. For the escape the boom challenge I felt when I was the one who was giving the directions to the
person who had the bomb that it was a little difficult because there were so many symbols and letters
and colors, but my team had pretty good communication and ended up finishing it and getting through it
as a team, when I was the person who holding the bomb I felt the stress of trying to explain what I was
seeing well so we wouldn’t make a mistake and it was definitely a challenge but I did manage to get
through it. The last activity we did was the mock interviews, out of all the activities I believe was the
hardest because I tend to get very shy in those situations and be closed off with the person asking
questions, but I tried my best to give it my all. I struggle with explaining my thoughts and when people
ask me to tell them about myself, I never know what to say and then get nervous and overthink
whatever activity I'm doing.
How can you improve your communication skills? Be specific.
I believe I could improve my communication skills by actively listening because I tend to doze off when
someone is speaking for a long time and then I don’t remember everything they had said and then I'm
stuck in an awkward position because I should’ve listened and now if someone were to talk or ask me
about what they were saying I would have such bad communication and feel lost about what we are
talking about. A way I could solve this is by making sure that when I get bored or doze off in my mind
that I remind myself to listen and think of the benefits it will have and the impact it will have on my life
and the conversations I'm having with others. Another way I could improve my communication skills is
by maintaining eye contact one of my worst habits is not making eye contact with people I'm talking to, I
have a bad tendency to look around the room, look down at my feet or if I'm reading a paper look at
that, I look at everything except for the person I am speaking to. I’ve always found eye contact so weird
and awkward with people that I’m so used to not but now that I'm getting older, I have started to notice
how much the little things we do have an impact on something like a job interview. A way I can solve
this is by holding eye contact with people even when I'm having little conversations with my friends or
family and just using it as a way to practice.
Why is effective communication considered a fundamental skill to have in the workplace and in life?
Provide a minimum of SIX reasons with EXAMPLES.
Effective communication is considered a fundamental skill to have in the workplace and just in life
because it is a huge part of our daily routine, we communicate with people every single day. If we didn’t
have good communication, it would be very difficult to get things done in a good timely matter because
everything and everyone would be chaos. Working in a team with others needs to have good
communication so that everyone is on the same page and understands what is happening, which will
lead to better productivity and outcomes. Another example is instructions if you had someone who
wasn’t good at giving clear instructions it could potentially lead to misunderstandings and in some cases
injuries, dangerous acts and many others. But if they were very clear and well-spoken there would be no
misunderstandings. Almost every day of our lives we are given feedback on things, it’s a great thing
especially when you can use it to your advantage to really improve in your learning, skill or whatever It is
you are receiving feedback on. Through good communication you can receive great feedback and
continue to grow and improve. We meet new people every day in order to build a relationship with
someone it is very crucial to have good communication skills so you can talk and get to know them but
also to share your emotions and how you're feeling to them to make the connection even stronger so
you can grow. Another good example would be negotiating without good communication skills you will
not be able to negotiate and express your needs without feeling confused because you won’t know how
to explain them, also it’s good to know how to find common ground and come to a mutual agreement
that benefits both sides equally. A good leader needs to have communication that is very effective and
inspiring in order to guide their team members through clearly. Without good communication skills you
would lack greatly in being a leader and your team would likely be very disorganized and all over the
place. Another good example for good communication is time management, if you are very efficent with
your time and deadlines and can communicate those with others like coworkers or family, etc then it
keeps everyone on the same page and well organzied.
