READING ONE

A twelve-year-old boy was the one who first discovered dinosaur footprints in America
in 1802. The boy, named Pliny Moody, was sowing a kind of wheat on his family farm in
western Massachusetts when he saw something very strange. He saw a flat piece of stone with
huge footprints on it.

Pliny told his family and friends that he had discovered something unusual. However,
no one at that time knew that they were dinosaur footprints. This was some time before the
word dinosaur was created. Today, we know that the footprints, that Pliny discovered and
reported, belong to dinosaurs that lived in the area millions of years earlier.

READING TWO

The Tournament of Roses today is quite famous for the parade and football game that
take place every year on January 1st. A parade of flower-covered floats moves through the
streets of Pasadena, California in the morning of the New Year every year. Then in the
afternoon, you can see a football game between a university team from the western states
and a rival team from farther east.

In its early days, the Tournament of Roses was quite different from today’s
tournament. It had its beginnings in 1890 when people celebrated in Pasadena with donkey
races and a parade of carriages covered with flowers.

A football game was not part of the Tournament of Roses until 1902. In that year, the
west coast team lost the game badly. Because of the loss, nobody wanted to play another
football game as part of the Tournament of Roses for other 14 years.
