Did I consider my opponent's knowledge level, concerns, values, and possible biases as I
developed my ideas?
Omer Dahan
Dear Editor,
I strongly disagree with Congressman Smith's proposal. While I appreciate the idea of
honoring the pioneers, I believe the plan for a statue in their honor is ill-advised. Such a
statue would glorify a history marred by brutality and disrespect towards the Native
Americans, whose lives and cultures were tragically lost. Undoubtedly, pioneers played a
significant role in America's expansion, but we cannot ignore the ethical shortcomings of
their actions. Their quest for land and resources often involved cruelty and greed, resulting in
the forced displacement and suffering of Native Americans who had lived on this land long
before the pioneers arrived. Erecting a statue to honor the pioneers would, in effect, condone
their cruel deeds.
I implore your readers to vote against Proposition 17. Let's not support commemorating the
tragic genocide of millions of innocent people nor celebrate those responsible for it. Instead, I
propose that we consider a statue that pays tribute to the Native Americans who tragically
lost their lives during America's expansion, serving as a beautiful and thoughtful bronze
memorial to acknowledge their contributions to the nation.
Sincerely,
Omer Dahan.
